it came to america in the early 1980's. -- and they came to america in the early 1980's. i father was studying at rutgers. they both came to america in the 80's. they settled in new jersey. that is where i was born. as i was writing this book, i thought about what their journey must have been like to come to america from india during such a challenging time for indians in this country. all of the steps they would both have to take to acclimate to this new home. especially my mother. she did not grow up speaking english and she did not have certain class privileges that others might enjoy in this country. to come to america and kaput the adopt a new way of life and create a culture in which i could have so many luxuries like i enjoy today. >> you are a food journalist profession and you actually teach the subject at university level. how did you find this path? mayukh sen: it was a jagged path. it was completely unexpected. i grew up -- i really wanted to be a writer going up. i wanted to be a film critic. i recorded old issues of entertainment weekly madman. pauline hale

it is important rural america not be one party america. we started the one country project. it was to reintroduce the democratic party to rural america and rural america to the democratic party. host: do think over the course of the years the policies of the democratic party have fallen out of favor with rural americans, or rural americans themselves have changed their views? guest: i think it is the emphasis. it is not the policy. the economic policies of the democratic already are much more favorable to rural america. where we get into challenges is when this becomes about defunding the police or about transgender bathrooms for all the cultural issues. then rural americans say that is not something that looks like me. when rural americans vote strictly culture on these issues is when we begin to see serious erosion of democratic support in rural america. i think we have to understand that we have to do a better job explaining our position on cultural issues. it does not mean we cannot persuade a few people, but we also have to be much more aggressive on outlining our econo

after 9/11, america came together. we prove to one another and to the world that we could not be defeated by terrorism. however horrific and devastating the attack might be. president bush and vice president cheney joined in inspiring the american people to rebuild our transportation industry, economy, our defenses and our united spirit. we mobilized our forces to attack al qaeda and the taliban. we vowed never to forget and never to forgive the brutal savages that sheltered terrorists, spawned terrorism, and debased their own people, particularly women and took the , lives and futures of thousands of americans. barbara would have been proud for what we as a country accomplished, particularly in afghanistan, in isolating and punishing the taliban. she was a fierce advocate for the rights of the oppressed disadvantaged, helping to form among other things the independent women's forum to assist and advance the voices of conservative women in this country, so that in future controversies, there would be a conservative voi
