. >> woodruff: robert joseph dole was born in the small town of russell, kansas, in 1923. he grew up with a brother and two sisters, in the hard times of the great depression. his father ran an egg and cream stand, and his mother sold singer sewing machines to help make ends meet. dole went off to college, but world war ii intervened. he enlisted in 1942, and was sent to italy in 1944. in april 1945, weeks before the war ended, dole was trying to rescue a radioman, when he was hit by enemy fire. it shattered his right shoulder, fractured vertebrae and, for a time, paralyzed him from the neck down. he spent 39 months recovering, mostly in military hospitals, where he listened to frank sinatra's "you'll never walk alone" every day for inspiration. his brother kenny, interviewed years later, reflected on just how bad dole's injuries were... >> i was just never so shocked in my life to see him when he lay there in bed from where i saw him last. it's like yesterday and today, it's a whole new ball game and at that time the doctors said he couldn't live another 48 hours. >> wood

he was born robert joseph dole july 22nd, 1923 in the small town of russell, kansas. the doles were a modest, hard working family. as a teenager, he was quite competitive, especially when it came to track. in 1942, dole joined the army. during world war ii, he was critically injured. it would take him years to get back on his feet but he never fully recovered. after the war and law school, dole became russell's youngest legislator. in 1960, he was elected to congress and the senate in 1968. where he served until 1996. dole had his eyes on the white house and ran as the vice presidential candidate with gerald ford on the republican ticket in 1976. the ticket lost. also, in the '70s, he met and married elizabeth, his second wife, who made her own run for the white house. dole was named gop candidate for president in 1996 but lost the uphill battle to incumbent president bill clinton. in 1997, he was awarded the presidential medal of freedom. the highest civilian award. he already had two purple hearts and a bronze star. in his retirement, bob dole was instrumental in ge

facing a hail of bullets, second lieutenant robert joseph dole hurled a grenade into an empty gun nest. he was trying to help a fallen comrade, his platoon radioman when everything changed, and i mean everything changed. his spine was damaged because fire tore across the hills shattering his body. grievously wounded, he was paralyzed. dragged behind a wall, bob would pass in and out of consciousness dreaming of home as he lay bleeding in a foxhole for nearly nine hours. he was 21 years old. nearly eight decades on, we gather here in a world far different from the mountains battlefield in 1949 -- '45. but there's something -- there's something that connects that past and present, wartime and peace, then and now. the courage, the grit, the goodness, and the grace of second lieutenant named bob dole who became congressman dole, senator dole, statesman, husband, father, friend, colleague, and a word that's often overused but not here, a genin hero, bob dole. dean, and the clergy officiated today's service, president clinton, vice president harris, vice president pence and cheney and speake
