for more on that i'm joined by cnn's nada bashir in london. we're hearing about sick medical staff, how bad has the situation gotten? >> reporter: well, the situation is nearing overwhelming for the national health service the head of the confederation describing it as a perfect stall between patients and cases rising at an alarming rate. and we're seeing a significant number of staff shortages in hospitals across the country. in the week up to january 2nd that increased by nearly 60%. so a significant short fall there in the number of health care staff available because they are getting sick and having to isolate. and that is a concern now, as we continue to see the spread of the omicron variant which is highly transmissible. that this could have another knock-on effect for the health care service. not only having to deal with the surge of cases inpatients but of course, a lack of staff available to really bolster this effort to deal with the spread of the virus. as you mentioned 200 emergency personnel have been deployed in london to support

cnn's nic robertson is in moskow. so tell us about this new reporting and the significance of it, nic. >> reporter: you know, this is a very strong statement from the british foreign office. the person that they're naming as the person that the russian government may be looking at to lead ukraine if russia decides to invade and if it decides to occupy the country, he's a pro-russian former mp in ukraine. cnn's contacted him, and he said, you know, i don't have a comment to make because i'm already on a sanctions list from russia. his implication there is why would russia pick me, you know, to lead the country for them if i'm on a russian sanctions list. but the british government have also named four other people, former prime minister to former deputy prime ministers and a former national security official in the ukrainian government who the british government says have been in communication with russian intelligence operatives. those operatives themselves currently engaging in the planning of the invasion of ukraine

cnn's nic robertson live in moscow. nic, explain to us what's happening here in kazakhstan. >> reporter: yeah, very scary words coming from the president of kazakhstan there. the reports at the moment still don't add up properly. what we're hearing from officials, 18 police officers killed. more than 700 injured. the official police line is that 26 protesters, as they call them, you know, bandits and terrorists without offering any evidence, 26 of them killed and saying that just 14 were injured. those numbers don't add up at all. so many dead and so few injured, when we've seen all the gunfire on the streets. the police are saying they've arrested 3,000 people. it is incredibly difficult to get a clear picture of what's happening in kazakhstan at the moment principally because the internet is being throttled back by the government and the president admitted that in his address today. this isn't just about oil. it began about prices, fuel being hiked at the beginning of the new year. but this is everything about the way
