nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live from sheriff's headquarters. you're monitoring a virtual hearing. what's happening? >> reporter: well, it's just starting to wrap up and sheriff laurie smith did waive her right to speedy trial which means that she did not answer or deny those allegations and we won't be hearing her do that for quite some time. we talked with our legal analyst who says this is not really a surprise because the grand jury transcript was only released so they really need to -- haven't had a lot of time to review all of that information that has triggered those allegations or accusations to be formalized in the court. and we asked for our cameras to be present. we asked to record the stream coming out of the san mateo county courtroom where this all happened. those requests were denied but we'll keep trying because we know you like to see these things for yourself often. sheriff smith is facing civil grand jury accusations of willful and corrupt misconduct. she and several top assistants are accused of granting concealed weapons per

. >> i am kris sanchez. mostly dry in the south bay, kari. you are tracking light rain in other places, though? >> yes, we are seeing some of the light showers moving through. we have seen it on storm ranger. it has mainly been focused on parts of the north bay and the peninsula and now we are seeing showers move into the oakland area. as we get a closer look we can see the rain coming down, and once again a steady light rain and making the commute a little slower in some of the spots so you should slow down on your way to work. also seeing some of the rain around the san mateo area, the santa cruz mountains getting in on showers and a wider view shows we are going to see more of the wet weather rolling in and we are seeing a lot more moisture moving in, and overall the storm system is weak and it will continue to bring us scattered showers in some parts of the bay area throughout the morning and early afternoon. we won't be done with the rain, so we will talk about more about what is in the forecast in a few minutes. >>> mike, what is it loo

i'm kris sanchez in for marcus washington. with the start of a new week, many school districts continue to face covid-related challenges. >> one district is facing claims of struggling to provide covid tests for educators. others have decided to transition to remote learning. cierra johnson joins us live from san francisco this morning. we're now hearing from sf unified regarding those tests. >> reporter: yes, good morning. this all sounds like deja vu. we've come so far but yet so far to go, especially as the covid and covid variant continues to spread. let's start here in san francisco as you mentioned. we're now hearing back from the district regarding a situation in which those social media posts by the union. in it they claim the district ran out of test kits. the union is asking the district to prioritize an agreement around masks, testing, as well as sick leave. we reached out to district reps regarding that claim and they responded explaining in part, quote, since winter break and amid the omicron surge, we have been r

i am laura garcia. >> i am kris sanchez. marcus washington has the day off. we want to start this hour with a look at the forecast because it's pretty variable around the bay. meteorologist, kari hall, with us. good morning. >> good morning. there are spots dealing with so much rain and other areas are like, what rain? that's what we are seeing in the tri-valley and the south bay, while we are still getting light showers in parts of the north bay from napa and solano counties and down to san francisco and parts of contra costa county this morning waking up to showers. as we get a closer look at concord right now, between concord, richmond and oakland, we are seeing light showers moving through, and showers continuing in san francisco and up and down peninsula where we are seeing light rain moving through, and we will also continue to see some of the rain moving through throughout the morning as well as a chance for this afternoon. we're not done with this wet weather yet. we are going to see more as we go throughout the week

i am kris sanchez. >> i am kira klapper, laura and marcus have the day off. let's start off with weather and kari. >> looks like the fog is not as dense and widespread as we saw yesterday morning, but confined to the north bay. we are seeing visibility down to quarter of a mile in napa and as you head over to novato. we start off with fog and will end the day with high winds and will have the high wind warning in effect, and that includes some of the coastal ranges and our hills, as we go up above 1,000 feet, and we can see the gusts topping 70 miles per hour. it's going to be a windy one, and we will talk more about that in the forecast coming up. >>> mike, are you seeing early issues in the morning commute? >> i have seen differences, and we are looking at a clearer view than yesterday at this time. we can clearly see 880 and you can see it's flowing on the maps as well. the green sensors show that, and the yellow shading is off 680, and so watch those patches off into rio vista. even out of the altamont where it says 205, no slowing yet. so a light volume

i am kris sanchez in for marcus. >> i am laura garcia. let's start out this hour with a look at the forecast. here's a live look at emeryville this morning. rain is coming down in parts of the bay area. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking it all for us. >> yeah, it's another soggy morning commute for parts of the east bay, north bay and san francisco. we also have seen the rain kind of slacking off in the tri-valley and the south bay where we have not seen much of the rain. right now it's down the peninsula, and this moisture will continue to roll on through with very light showers for the most part, and still bringing in beneficial rainfall. we're going to continue to see this going on as we go into today. for concord, temperatures are warmer than over the weekend so we are making progress there. we will stay in the 50s throughout today. we will see rain in the next few hours, and we should see peeks of sunshine later today. i will follow this. we will talk about what else is ahead as more rain comes in, coming up in a few minutes. >>

i am kris sanchez in for marcus. >> i am always here, in for a long time. vianey is in for kari this morning. you are tracking the visibility issues and forecast? >> yeah, it's foggy out there, especially in san francisco and the bay bridge toll plaza, throughout the entire bay area but especially in the south bay, look at this, down to quarter of a mile visibility. you are not imagining that fog if you are looking out the window in morgan hill and san josÉ. the oakland area, we're going to keep the fog lingering for the first half of the morning. the camera you see behind the temperature trend, it's supposed to be a look at san josÉ. notice the fog window is until about 9:00 to 10:00, and there are small breaks of sunshine through the afternoon. daytime highs similar to yesterday where we topped out in the low 60s. a couple possible low 60s in the interior valleys, and all in all, we will continue to see the dry weather not just for today but also through the weekend. we will take you through the timing of all that coming up in a few minutes. back to you

i am kris sanchez. marcus washington has the day off. >> yeah, let's get a look at the forecast right now with meteorologist, kari hall. what are we tuning in for here? >> we are looking good today. for the most part, storm ranger showing a dry start this morning. we will see a very active weather pattern across the region but all of the rain for the most part is to the north of us. we have seen the rain just waving up and down the west coast. the clouds will reach back in and we will have a chance for showers in the north bay, but much of the bay area staying dry. martinez, temperatures in the low 50s right now. we will continue to see the cloudy skies. we are headed for the upper 50s for this afternoon. nice and normal temperatures for early january. we're also going to see the chance of rain in the north bay and peeks of sunshine elsewhere. temperatures hit 60 degrees in san josÉ and even milder for the next few days. we'll talk more about that and when more widespread rain comes back. that's coming
