the team is fanned out from new york to new england. we want to begin with emilieikeada on long island. emilie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is coming down at a fast clip. several inches is hour. that makes it difficult for the plows to keep up with the pace of the storm. i want to show you the consistent of the snow. the winds are biting. it picks up the snow and worsens visibility. that is why you will hear from forecasters and officials telling people to stay home warning of the nearly impossible travel conditions. it has been quiet on the roads so far. ecept when we see the caravans of snow plows. nearly 2,000 plows responding to the winter storm. we are seeing similar pictures across the northeast. several governors declaring states of emergency here in new york and maryland and new jersey. part of new jersey seeing more than a foot of snow. similarly in maryland, where they are getting 9 inches. this is the brunt of the storm which continues to move through. we will see several more hours of these types of condition

new york emergency services. bringing in former fire chief downey, crews were down i think in three minutes first response, still, 19 people dead, 13 others with life-threatening injuries. what does it tell you about the nature of this fire and the smoke that it caused? >> well, i mean clearly it was a well-i well-involved apartment, a lot of fire when the crews arrived, you know, based on the time of year, the building is sealed up, trying to keep the heat in and keep the residents warm and so the smoke, there's nowhere for the smoke to travel out of the building so it travelled through those windowless hall ways and those areas where it could extend up higher into the building. these highrise fires are personnel intensive, requiring a lot of people to affect rescue and fire suppression. >> yeah, i mean the scale of the response and the after from the fdny i think the mayor said some were operating without oxygen at some point in a very dangerous situation to save lives. i think one of the questions people aren'

it was a devastating day here in new york city. one of the deadliest fires in decades has killed at least 19 people, including nine children. dozens of others have been injured. the massive fire broke out just before noon. it began in a third-floor apartment of a 19-story building in the bronx. investigators believe the cause was a space heater. at least 200 firefighters responded. cbs's tom hanson is there for us tonight. tom? >> reporter: good evening, jericka. paint a terrifying picture for the hundreds of people living at this apartment complex. one woman we spoke to says the smoke was so thick, she couldn't even see the steps in front of her and neighbors say they felt helpless as they watched the tragedy unfold. >> reporter: officials say it may be new york city's worst fire in more than three decades. >> this is a horrific, horrific, painful moment for the city of new york. >> reporter: firefighters say they arrived just three minutes after the call went out. >> it was just pitch black in my huse in the daytime. the fire, th
