i'm tom hanson, cbs new york. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ this is the "cbs overnight news". >> o'donnell: good evening, and thank you for joining us, as we kick off the week together. tonight, the first glimmer of hope in what could be life after the pandemic. three states across the northeast, once the epicenter of the omicron surge, announced time lines to end strict covid mask mandates. the governors of new jersey, delaware, and connecticut all made the announcement to end their state's in-school mask mandates as cases continue their steep decline nationwide. according to johns hopkins, the number of new cases yesterday are down more than 95% from the high of 1.4 million on january 10th. more states are expected to follow suit even as the white house today said universal mask wearing in school still remains our recommendation. a lot of news to get to. cbs's nancy chen will start us off from new york. good evening, nancy. >> reporter: good evening to you. americans are sharply divided over restrictions but one after another state leaders are moving to a new normal, even as health officials urge caution.

i'm tom hanson, cbs news, new york. >> announcer: this is the "cbs overnight news." >>> good evening and thank you so much for joining us. tonight one by one, states are preparing to lose their mask mandates. at least nine states in the last few days have moved to end requirements for schools or public places. today four more states joined a growing list of governors that have announced plans to repeal or lift those mask mandates, and let them expire. more are expected to follow suit in the days ahead as americans are eager to return to life before the pandemic. the seven-day average of new cases fell to just over 230,000 as of yesterday. that is actually the lowest number since december. the cdc today warned states about moving too fast, and they are still recommending indoor mask wearing in places of substantial or high transmission of the virus. cdc director dr. rochelle walensky said they are encouraged by the current trends, but, quote, we are not there yet. we have a lot of news to get to you and cbs's mola lenghi is going to start us off in new york city. good evening, mola. >
