that's where john roberts comes in. the conservative justice ruled to narrow the martin luther king voting rights act. he is not a big leader on the issues. he broke with the conservative block in the case of limits of this kind of political trick, where politicians draw a map and use that map to then basically pick their own voters to deny you an effective say because they preordained it. and republicans specifically as i mention are trying to cancel out black voters who currently tend to vote in the aggregate for democrats. as the times column recently put it, new conservative voting rights order from the supreme court is so at odds with precedent that john roberts is feeling constrained to dissent. roberts has a pretty narrow view of federal intervention in these maps, even he tried to stop what republicans are doing. that tells you something tonight. it is all related. because when the supreme court declares it is open season and removes a back stop, that invites more bannon desantis political war. that's the headli

this is the same john roberts who wrote the decision in 2012 that essentially gutted the voting rights act, even he finds this alabama decision to be a step too far. in a separate dissent justice elana kagan said they've had their power diminished in violation of a law this court once knew to buttress all of american democracy, end quote. and it is into this context, into a world created by an activist right-wing supreme court bent on ignoring the precedent of what was left of the protections of the voting rights act. there aren't many left, that we need to understand the oncoming assault on voting rights from the states. according to the brennan center for justice, as of january 19th, 96 bills were filed that would make it harder to vote in 12 states. that's just in 2022. that's not including bills carried over from 2021. i think the number is 240 when you count them all. almost all target mail-in voting. senior counsel for the naacp legal defense and education fund which is a participant in this case. mr. ross, thank you for joining us this morning. what's your sense of how this is g

his loved ones are launching the john robert lewis legacy institute. joining me is angela lewis warren, the late congressman's niece and his first cousin and a member of the board of director, amman and also the strategy and development director. angela, i'm going to start with you. congressman lewis was one of the strongest advocates for voting rights and education. what can you tell us about this new institute and its mission? >> one thing about this institute is we're going to stand with what uncle robert -- i'm sorry, congressman john started. we're about education, about reaching out to the people, about this institute is going to make sure that his legacy stay alive by making sure that we continue what he started, where we want to reach out to the youth and reach out to any organization that's willing to help women of color, men of color, diversity. we're just going to make sure that we know that we need to push what is right and that people understand that reading is important. we're just going to make sure everything that uncle robert -- i'm go
