joining me now via skype from oakland is mayor libby schaaf. mayor schaaf, thank you for joining us. you have been a frequent guest on "kqed newsroom" since you begin your tenure as mayor. we wish we could've had you in studo today. covid does get in the way of that sometimes, so we're looking at each other across the bay in screens today , but let's take a look at some of those changes that came into place because of what happened during the pandemic, some things that were a little more positive that we enjoyed like the slow streets program. just unfortunately, recently last week, oakland's bicycle is a pedestrian advisory commission said it's going to be dismantling the slow streets program. do you think that is the right thing to do? >> we're not dismantling it. with hitting it to adjust to the current conditions. we're going to be making slow streets permanent where appropriate, but people are going back to work now. cars are back on the streets, and so it's not as safe to have the number of slow streets that we rolled out with such urgency

this week, the oakland school merge or close 15 schools. a lot of that control rests in the hands of the school board. for you as a mayor, as a parent of a public school student, what do you feel is important to do to support the school system? >> you know, i really feel for parents, students, teachers. we have been through so much drama, and they have every right to feel distrustful and fearful about this decision, but i believe that it is different this time. this is not just some painful but necessary budget cut. when you look at districts like stockton, fremont, san jose, they serve roughly the same number of students, about 33,000, but they do it in almost half the campuses, between 41 and 48 causes in those three districts, where's oakland has 80 campuses. this is an opportunity to do better for our students, our educators, our families, and i trust this leader to deliver on that promise in a way that has never happened before. >> mayor schaaf, when you are mayor elect, before you had even taken office, you joined us here in the studi

grant day in oakland. the city would also recognize the work and activism of grant's mother, wanda johnson on new year's day 2000 and nine the 24 year old was unarmed when he was shot in the back and killed by then bart police officer johannes mehserle, who said he mistakenly grabbed his gun instead of his taser. mr lee was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months out of a two year prison sentence. federal prosecutors say they're not going to seek the death penalty in the killing of a federal agent in oakland, stephen corio. of ben loman and robert justice of millbrae are charged with the murder of homeland security officer dave underwood. he was shot and killed and may have 2020 during the protests in oakland that followed the death of george floyd. prosecutors claimed the two men charged with the murder have links to a far right extremist movement and wanted to incite violence. homicide investigation is underway in the east bay after a man's body was found right near the el cerrito publ

no, that is not happening in front of oakland city hall. one news conference was made up of teachers. parents, elected leaders against the decision to close and merge. at the same time the school district was holding its own news conference on zoom, insisting it is making only necessary moves. today's reaction included the state lawmaker who argues the legislature can fix things without closing schools. >> there is more that the legislature should and can do to ensure that school districts like oakland have the resources they need to provide children and youth with a quality education. and i am committed to continue to fight for progressive policies to do right by our schools. that includes fighting this year with my legislative colleagues to relieve the debt usd the community did as a result of state receivership. >> board of education voted early this morning to make significant changes to the structure of the district for school consolidations based on some serious still in this case in the district as a whole. army to remain fiscally so

now, for example, in oakland unified school district. these kids say that and los altos, they receive $2000 between what los altos elementary school students, c versus oakland, unified school district. and check this out. the gap is even greater. when we talk about the high school about an $8,000 differential, the students say that they want action. >> they want the governor to step in and help. they say that the recent issue of closing schools in oakland is prompting them to speak up and they were out here with your social studies teacher who spoke with kron 4. listen. it. we heard the news, of course, was going on in oakland. and people are really upset. they heard about the hunger strikers about the protests, nothing there to the schools that are going to be close. and we talked about how even before opening the schools are being threatened to be closed. the funding for schools here so much greater than the funding there. and we start to my racism and how we want a society where kids get people funding for education and and from there

i didn't want periods to have to take their kids from east oakland to west oakland. in that school board meeting is still going on at this hour, and they're probably going to be taking another couple hours because there are so many people who want to weigh in on this, and the board has said that they are hoping to vote on this by next week. so a lot of tension here in oakland tonight as they have this meeting over this decision that really has been so painful for so many of these parents. you can you can hear it in their voices, janna. it sounds like so many of these parents felt like they were blindsided by all of this. what does the district say about the notion that they didn't let families know early enough about the potential closures? well the president gary, he told me today that you know they felt like no matter when they informed the parents that there would have been resistance. he admits that it is a tight timeline. but the reason for that, he says, is they want to try and get those parents priority for enrollment and the enrollment period. it's going to b

in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. ama: also in oakland developing news in friday's shooting on 880 that killed a former cal basketball star. late this the suspect in the killing of 65-year-old gene ransom has been charngd. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone has been going through the charming documents and joins us from the newsroom. j.r. reporter: the suspect in gene ransom's killing is now facing felony charges including murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle. sources close to the investigation tell us road rage is likely to blame here. 25-year-old juan garcia was arrested saturday morning in connection with the shooting that left ransom dead. the police report says ransom was driving his honda northbound along i-880 in oakland in the fast lane and just south of oak street when garcia in a black lexus drove along the small shoulder next to ransom coming side-by-side with him. garcia then fired one shot at ransom, striking -- striking him in the head and proving to be fatal. last weekend we talked with ransom's best

the school board meeting in oakland meeting again tonight. but the fight to keep the schools open. >> far from over. education leaders now calling for a possible teacher strikes lawsuits. now in the process of being filed as well. others are calling for more funding for the state. but those who are in favor of closing the schools say that this is so much more than dollars and cents on the left side of your screen are the schools that will close and merge at the end of the current school year. they are community day school and parker elementary rise community school will now merge with highland. also 6th through 8th grades will be cut from 2 schools on the right side of your screen are the 5 schools that are now set to close at the end of next school year. the move coming after 8 hours of debate and public comment. in fact, so many people wanted the opportunity to talk. some 200 people were still waiting to speak when the board abruptly ended public comment last night. so they could begin debating this final plan approved by the board. did rem
