we are absolutely committed to promoting ngo participation in the work of the u.n. and i personally as the new assistant secretary for io want to hear from civil society. i was grateful at the number of u.s. ngos and civil society groups including human rights defenders who were brought in to meet with me so i could hear firsthand about their priorities and have that contact early in my tenure. we want to make sure that we are welcoming civil society into discussions in new york, in geneva, and across the u.n. system. we see that some other countries, and here i'm speaking about prc again, have made efforts to block legitimate ngos from participating in the u.n. and to bring that voice, to bring the people's voice into these important discussions. we look at the u.n. ngo committee in new york where prc has worked to make international cooperation i would say less effective by preventing the valuable conclusions of civil society activists and human rights defenders, of academics, of private sector voices. so we're going to continue to push back against this practice
