it's thanks to the unions organizing in general motors, ford, and u.s. steel that the middle class was created in the united states. unions are a major reason that america's standard of living in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's was the highest in the world. gm, ford, many companies were making gazillions of dollars after world war ii, but many workers' wages were not good at all. people were struggling to get by. these key union contractors in the 1950's and 1960's raise wages, gave people health and pension benefits, that was key to creating the middle-class and steve, you might have felt with your grandparents as well and push them into the middle class, a lot of people forget the basic history about how unions have helped. i have written lots of stories about the problems with unions. i have written about corruption, discrimination against women, blacks, hispanics, but i would argue that unions have come a very long way in reducing corruption. i would argue there is much less corruption in a union move and then there was in the trump administration. th

you gave the eulogy -- a eulogy at both betty ford's funeral and at gerald ford's funeral. >> yeah. >> how much time did you spend and how did you go about preparing for those eulogies? >> i don't know how you prepare for it. i think, in a way -- in the case of president ford, i worked on a draft months in advance of his passing. for the reason i did not want to be caught at the worst possible time with my own emotions involved and run the risk of not doing your best possible work. and so that's something that i wrote in draft form probably six months before he passed. >> how long did it take you to get to the draft form? hours? >> a few days. >> full time a couple of days? >> oh, yeah, yeah. a few days. you go through -- you don't write books, you rewrite books. and that's true for me with speeches. it's a different kind of writing. a speech, i'm a victim of my own facility. i used to type, peck, with two fingers. i could do 60-65 words, but -- i can write a speech, i can bang out a speech in an hour. i have written eulogies in -- i want to tell you a story. it's been probably ten or
