mike: two quick follow-ups. what is your estimate on the impact of rates on reducing the balance sheet? two, what would trigger sales of mortgage-backed securities? you said you might do that. john: this question about how you convert balance sheet reduction, how big of a change in the federal funds target is that equal to? that is hard. to calculate that number given all the uncertainty, given the balance sheet policy has affected the economy in different ways. the way i think about it, as we reduce the balance sheet, as we announce doing that, you are seeing upward pressure on longer-term interest rates, term premium. we are seeing that in the data. if you are looking at five-your forward treasury rates, 10-year rates, we have seen over the past several months, movements up in those rates, which i think reflect the market expectation that we will conduct a balance sheet reduction. i see that as the channel by which it affects things, raises mortgage rates, affecting borrowing costs. i think a lot of it has hap

mike: i'm not sure nimble is gone altogether. we think the fed and banks are going to consistently say they are data dependent. for the fed that really means, what does inflation do? where does u.s. cpi print next week? i would say that is the big data point before the meeting on may 4. the fed can look at that, and if you have people still reluctant on the fomc to go 50, a decent sized number there probably tips them over. his nimble dead? probably not, but methodical seems to be getting a lot more intention. hope it is not going from the article to shock and all. kailey: where do you drive -- draw that line between where shock and awe is? mike: 50 basis points at the next two meetings. 50 is priced in this time, but if it is back-to-back i think people look to the fed and say, wow, talk is cheap, but the fed has acted aggressively. maybe it goes 50 several more times this year and we have to ratchet up our pricing assumptions. not just for 2022, just where most of the client questions come in, for 2023, and i think that would p

officially nasdaq composite down 18%, mike frrx the year. what sort of levels should we be watching, what sort of action should we be watching when we get heavy sell-offs like this? >> yeah, keep in mind, the lows that we havetraded intraday this year back in march, are below 4200 on the s&p, so 4170 was a close in mid-march that was the low by the way, the low on the day before the first rate hike, so the way the market has gone is it's worked itself up into an anxious state, anticipating fed hawkishness, anticipating how aggressive the rate hikes are going to be and then we got the first hike and it was a bit of a relief, a buy the news type of reaction who knows if we're in for something like that. it's more than a week until the next fed meeting the market has been unable to make much use of the typical late april seasonal tailwinds, that's for sure. i think we're at the zone in the 4200s where the market has a few times more or less kind of gathered itself over the course of three months. >> four-week losing streak here for the dow. s&p
