here is what mr. burns and mr. martin said about mr. mccarthy. quote, on january 10th, so four days after the attack on the capitol, kevin mccarthy convened a small group of house republican leaders to share his thinking. speaking with just three other top republicans on a private, call mccarthy said he might call on trump to resign. he conferred for more than 45 minutes, with steve scalise, liz cheney, and tom amr, the minnesota congressman who led the republicans campaign committee. the usually upbeat mccarthy was audibly anguished. the gravity of the attack was still sinking in, and it seemed increasingly clear to him that he had to break with trump, it was finally time to end their alliance. his plan, mccarthy said, was to approach president trump, and tell him it was inevitable that congress would impeach him, and it isn't time for him to he envisioned telling trump of an impeachment resolution, saying, quote, i think this will pass. and it would be my recommendation that you should resign. i think this will pass, meaning the impeachment res

mccarthy. in their new book, mr. martin and mr. burns call it simply surrender by mr. mccarthy. that's the word they use. but you know, it's another thing entirely for him to deny that this all happened. when in fact it happened. in a statement to the "new york times" earlier today, a spokesman for kevin mccarthy issued a flat denial that mccarthy ever said he would push trump to resign, that spokesman said, quote, mccarthy never said he called trump to say he should resign. he never said he called trump to say he should resign. to further clarify, you should also know that nbc news reached out to the congressman's office following that statement, specifically asking again, and drilling down, on the question of whether or not mr. mccarthy said he would push president trump to resign. his spokesman responded saying, quote, no, he did not. mccarthy issued a statement himself, saying "the new york times" reporting on me is totally false and wrong. the problem with these denials from mr. mccarthy and his office is that we have now obtained audio of that january 10th phone call that

crump talk to mr. mccarthy. >> i want to play a clip from a show yesterday in which i spoke with charlie's ike's, about what was happening with mark meadows as well. that information that we're now hearing that meadows actually knew there was a possibility of violence being told by the secret service before january six. i want to talk on the other side. >> mark meadows is at the center of all of what was going on with the white house on january six. he is the hub, that's why it's so urgent that we have the department of justice aggressively pursuing all of this, these guys are never gonna tell the truth until they are forced by a federal grand jury. >> what do you make of that congresswoman? >> well, as we said in our legal filings we have evidence that mr. meadows was told in advance of january six, of the likelihood or possibility of violence. he was told that this alternate electors scheme, pressing the vice president, was not legal and yet he proceeded anyhow despite the risk, despite the unlawful-

mccarthy trying to satisfy mr. trump. when i interviewed the former president last year about this, he was very aware of the power he has over elected republicans, including mr. mccarthy because so many of their own voters care about the relationship that trump has with elected republicans in congress. and it's so important to keep mr. trump satisfied because of that. so i don't think the issue here is necessarily will this impact trump and trump's relaugsship with mccarthy or vice versa. will trump look for another candidate for speaker of the house if the republicans win the majority in november because of this. i think he likes the relationship where mr. mccarthy is always trying to satisfy and keep trump assuaged from doing things that would be counterproductive to republicans' political aims. i do think the question we've gotten to here is how do other house republicans react to this. when you are a leader of the conference, whether you're the top leader or a major depp testify leader, you are don't get to say anythi

i think it's all a big compliment, mr. trump said of mr. mccarthy and other republicans who criticized him after january 6, and then said they'll stid back him. they realized they were wrong and supported me. did that surprise you? >> well, it did surprise me, until i read the statement over and over again, and i realized that this is the way donald trump thinks. it gives you great insight into his mind, which is that they were wrong when they said i should resign. they were wrong when they criticized me. but i am so powerful and so important in the republican party that they changed their minds. and also maybe they listened to me and understood that i was right all along. this is the way donald trump thinks. and after i thought about that for a while, it made an awful lot of sense to me because he realized, or in his own mind, he thinks that he has conquered kevin mccarthy and the rest of those people who dared to disagree with him on impeachment, for example, and he has made it his life's work right now to try and defeat those people in t
