but we are talking ohio. it has been a republican state for, especially with the incumbent administration. we did see a democrat win in 2018, but that was a really good year for democrats. this time, tim ryan is going to have a much tougher challenge ahead of him then sherrod brown did when he, as a democratic incumbent, won reelection. what we are going to see is a candidate who receives a plurality support in the primary ending up being a key voice in the senate. to be tear, rob portman has been one of the more understated members of the senate. i think we are going to see a very different senate partially because of these crowded republican primaries that are going to likely elect members who did not get a huge amount of support from the republican electorate to begin with. it is just a dynamic to keep an eye out for. host: we will give our viewers and listeners a flavor of what that race is like in ohio. we talked about jd vance, one of the republican candidates, now endorsed by former president donald tr

on both sides, who is in the ohio senate race? guest: on the democratic side, you have congressman tim ryan, who is seen as the favorite. there is an upstart challenger who is a former attorney at the protection bureau but to brian has garnered -- but tim ryan has garnered most and is seen as the odds on favorite. the republican site has been much more chaotic as plenty of your viewers know, where you have five or six candidates. you have former treasurer josh mandel, who is to been seen as the front runner for quite some time in known around the state. most recently, the author and venture capitalist, he recently received a trump endorsement and has shot into the upper tier of those candidates. then you have cleveland businessman mike gibbons who has spent a massive amount of his own fortune, more than any other candidate in the country as of right now. you have the former ohio republican party chairman but he has seemed to falter as the contest has gone along he has the endorsement of former senator rob portman but has not picke

let me ask you about the ohio senate race. jd vance, the hillbilly elegy author, is one of the republican candidates there. jd vance endorsed by president trump this past week. was that a surprise? guest: it was not a surprise that he was going to endorse. he made it clear he was going to eventually endorse. i think the choice would have been surprising no matter who he chose because it was such a close race. it is a crowded primary, which means -- backing a bit, this is an open seat. there's been this primary between five different republicans that has probably been the most is in full primaries of the senate map in 2022. in the end, it looks like trump endorsed jd vance and we are not going to see the other poor -- the other four candidate give up. so they will still explain why they are the most trumpy, even if they did not get the endorsement. it is really an example of a phenomenon we have been seeing across the country. in ohio i think it is a little bit more extreme. in one of their debates, the primary debates, it almo

chris, let's go back to rachel's report out of ohio. j.d. vance is one of over a hundred people that trump has endorsed. do those endorsements matter? >> well, we're going to find out, but i will tell you, let's let's look at the governor's races first. he's gone after four incumbent republican governors, kemp in georgia, little, dewine in ohio, ivey in alabama. i think all four will win their primaries over the course of the next six to eight weeks. i don't know that the j.d. vance one is anywhere near a layup. you've got republicans killing republican there with the club for growth who has been carrying trmp's water in georgia is now working against him with the j.d. vance endorsement, so he's kind of all over the lot, and the idea, look, i've known him for a long time, the idea that he makes these decisions based upon political analysis is sophistry. this is all emotional decisions and who speaks to him last and you saw that in the j.d. vance -- i think you saw it with the endorsement of dr. oz so these are going to land all over the plac

jacqui: we are back with our political panel now, jonathan, david, talking about ohio. we were talking during the break, you know, this is, i think, just one of the earlier tests that we're seeing of the trump factor and how much of an impact it's going to have. i want to pull up the poll that we had whether trump's endorsement makes you more or less supportive of vance. the polling that we had from a recent fox news poll shows trump's endorsement has made 42% of voters more supportive, 23% less supportive and 27% -- i thought that was interesting -- had no effect. so when you take that 27% and you also hear what mark meredith just said, 14% or so of voters are undecided going into this, what does that all mean? david, you first. >> races that are this close, everything matters and nothing matters in that it's unlikely to be one thing that definitively sends this election one way or the other. and yet everything matters. which voters turn out, where do conservatives go, which is sections of the state turn out the most, who has exceptive congressional races that -- compe

i appreciate the recent announcement about the plant in ohio. i think the chips act is going to create a number of research and manufacturing jobs, all across the united states. i serve as chairman of the space and science subcommittee of this committee and i also chair the employment workplace safety subcommittee of the health committee. health, labor and pensions. and that workplace education and training. and i guess i've spent a lot of time looking as we go into this great transition into clean energy, we're going into a great transition what a job means and how people are going to be trained. i think that the work force development that's required to navigate this great transition is going to be prodigious, for skilled stem work force needed to manufacture chips, rangers from anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 workers by 2025. so in your view, how do you-- how do we help workers from relevant manufacturing fields upskill and reskill to satisfy those needs? >> and we believe that this is a critical topic, one that there are aspects of the chip

i think we will be watching the ohio senate primary. and the pennsylvania senate on the republican side or both sides. i don't think democrats are going to get their best candidate in pennsylvania. i think lieutenant governor federman is more likely to win the nomination. i am not sure he would be the strongest candidate. the ohio republican primary. it is like a dumpster fire. who knows what will come out of it? north carolina, i think the weaker republican will probably win the republican primary in north carolina. but i think given this environment, even the weaker republican is more likely to win the general election. host: let's look specifically at ohio. i want to show an add from j.d. vance. here is his add touting his endorsement from former president trump. i went all the way out to ohio. and i'm probably going to be the only person you meet in your life that talks about cleveland like it's new york city. let's talk about the ohio situation which seems particularly sort of wild. i mean, am i right that they just basically ignored the courts order? that the maps have to be tossed? >> yes chris. in january the states in ohio step down the proposal as contrary to the state constitution. and there was an amendment passed by voters by a considerable a majority that said that maps could not give one party an undue advantage. and the chief justice was a moderate republican. she ruled, not only against the congressional maps, but the state legislative maps. and then republicans went ahead and passed him up that was substantially similar to it. and the court decided that there was not enough time to hold a trial before the primaries. so on tuesday, there is going to be a primary where voters are voting under gerrymandered lines. and effectively, they figured out an end around for this reform that democrats have not benefited from in new york. and that makes all of the difference in this cycle. >> yes. in new york, what you have got is a fairly aggressive democratic ge

trump endorsed in ohio j.d. vance over a former state gop chair, former state treasurer, a well-known businessman and then in pennsylvania, dr. oz is running against david mccormick whose wife was in his administration. and his own former ambassador to denmark. what is your take on whether or not he is, as one source said to me this morning, a paper tiger, or these are going to matter? >> it's really interesting. they are going to matter. they may matter for trump as much as the outcome of the races. but i think it looks like there are really three patterns that we're watching play out. and one is that donald trump really believes in the power of celebrity. he wants to win these races in the general election and it's always going to be his instinct that fame and the ability to draw eyeballs will propel voters to the polls. there's a fair amount of him wanting to get revenge on the people who weren't with him. whether that's like directly not with him or whether it's like soft not with him. and vance is sort of a
