house historical associ. and for flair and stacy came up with a set of i guess you would call them roadmaps or criteria. just how do we know if a first lady is being influential? how do we know that at the time if we do know it what are some of the sign posts that we might see and then afterwards how do we know what what are some of the signals that a first is being influential? well, these are many of these go back to the very earliest first ladies as you two have discussed. and some of it is common sensical did has she achieved what she said she would achieve in some cases and on the other end of the scale as we have the sienna first ladies poll. so just like we take a sounding of what americans think about how well they're presidents succeeding. how weird is the first lady stand in that as well? we look at how her relationship with her husband seems to succeed or fail how any cause she might espouse supports her husband's programs. there are a number of ways that we i think try to decide what whether first

lena mann historian with the white house historical association dr. elizabeth chew executive vice president and chief curator at james madison's montpelier and jennifer stacey a member of highlands council of descendant advisors. please join me in welcoming brent a santoa elizabeth and jennifer i am honored this morning to share the stage with four powerful women who are innovating preservation practice. what i want to do is to share some brief opening remarks to set the stage for our conversation. and solidarity with african americans a multiracial coalition is marching in the footsteps of earlier generations whose vision for equality and human rights continues to inspire. nevertheless the preservation movement is flawed. and the not too distant past historic sites were preserved to reinforce the white majority's narrative. and to communicate idealize but unevenly realized american values. hence, too often the historic imprint of black people has been rendered invisible. we at the national trust are proud to support organizations and ideas that are r

i'm lorna johnson from the committee member of the white house historical association. i'm from california and my sister is a professor. she's a middle school teacher principal and one of the problems that i find trying to get her involved in some of these things this time. they really they're so overwhelmed, you know, not having adequate resources. and another thing is a question of what you bring into the classroom how it's presented and the controversies people are afraid to make mistake. how do we try to get attention to that and address some of these situations because we all know the right thing and we are basically preaching to the choir here, but how do we get some of these things implemented and how do we get people to be? comfortable speaking about the what is uncomfortable and not being getting some kind of repercussions for saying the wrong thing or making mistakes. i think the time issue and david mentioned this earlier we're involved with this education from american democracy and that came out of a national endowment for the humanities grant in the idea w

and one of the things that we -- our goal, one of the goals of the white house historical association is making the white house accessible to every individual. because the white house is the people's house. it's great that presidents get to live there. it's their home for the time they're there. but it belongs to everyone. and that's really one of our big goals. and i just wanted to share, i got the great privilege, my dad passed away 11 years ago and he never got to go to the white house, but i got the great privilege, three years ago, before covid, taking my 90-year-old mother on a private tour of the white house. it was one of the most amazing things i've done. to watch her, she was in good health, but she would not get in a wheelchair. she walked every step. we took her up the presidential elevator. i just had to share that because i think the libraries and all these other sites are so important to states and individuals, where the presidents were born, where they had a history. and i have think that's what you're going to hear about coming to life here. so with that i'll jump in.

house historical association. so we wanted to start with a pretty basic question, and that is how did the position of first ladies come to be? that's not in the constitution as the presidential position is and office is, and it's an unelected position as we know. so how did it start? and i'm going to turn to my first two colleagues to my left here. to diana who is writing a book about all first ladies, and we want to start with the very first first ladies, and i also want to turn as well to catherine algore because she's a professional on the founding first ladies. >> well, i don't think you can really study the presidency without studying first ladies. i'm biased, but i really believe that. it really started because this has been a partnership from the very beginning, when martha washington arrived in new york a couple of months after the president had arrived, she was greeted with -- by the president in a barge. he then -- in new jersey -- rode her over to the shore in new york. she was greeted with a gun absolu

. >> so i am a historian at the white house historical association, and i help out with an initiative called slavery in the president's neighborhood, very near and dear to my heart. the way this got started for us, in 2016, first lady michelle obama spoke at the dnc convention where she said i wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and enslaved people were essential to the construction of the white house, to the making of bricks and to lifting up the walls, and they were essential to that white house construction. then it didn't stop there. john adams moves into the white house in 1800, however he did not -- we have not found evidence of him using enslaved labor in the home, and it's still a possibility, and thomas jefferson, when he comes a few months later slavery becomes embedded in the white house as well. slavery continues until the zachary taylor administration, and it's also important to note that there are nine presidents that used enslaved labor at the white house and the names on that list are a little bit surprising. one of the most surprising names is j
