nbc bay area news. for mac we are hearing from the man who got shot during an altercation with mma star cain velasquez in san jose. he came out during a bail hearing today. paul bender, in the car that velasquez was chasing and firing at for seven miles told the judge he fears for his life. bender is the stepfather to harry clark. he is charged with molesting a close family member of cain velasquez at the family's day care center in sam martin. he told the judge he has lost function of his fingers on his right hand and cannot work. the judge denied bail for cain velasquez, calling the shooting reckless, a reckless disregard for human life. >> not only are we fearful, of cain velasquez, there have been individuals that have followed that, and individuals have sat out their home, waiting for them to leave. they are very fearful. >> velasquez's lawyer said that the wrong man is behind bars tonight. you see him there, he proposed a $1 million bond. he also said that cain velasquez could remain in an unlocke

let's take a look at some bay area counties. in contra costa there have been almost 2,000 new cases added just in the last 24 hours. only 60 patients are hospitalized with covid in that county. alameda county, more than 2700 new cases added within the last day. hospitalizations there at 50 patients. >> go ahead and take you to marin county now. it's seeing a surge in covid-19 cases fueled by the highly contagious omicron ba.2 variant. that's according to the county's health officials. as we told you yesterday, 20 schools in marin county are experiencing outbreaks. since the first week of april, case rates have tripled. however, officials say there has not been a rise in hospitalizations. schools across the bay area are reporting a covid surge. that includes k through 12 and universities like stanford where the seven-day positivity rate has reached more than 9%. nbc bay area's stephanie magallon joins us live now near the stanford campus. stephanie, i know you got to speak with some students out there. what are they seeing? >> re

with an even higher percentage right here in the bay area. and bcb area is speaking with one expert about the latest metrics. >> reporter: good morning, the expert tells me the numbers are slowly increasing for folks returning to the office. right now we are far from the pre-pandemic numbers in the bay area. we spoke to the chairman that is a company with a commercial real estate security provider more than 3000 buildings with more than 40,000 companies. he said shortly after the pandemic the company began tracking and building oxygen to the lower key takeaways from the data that they gathered. one of which, things are increasing 50% to date. you compare going back to the office with other activities like feeder or air travel, near pre-pandemic levels. actually it's significantly lagging behind. the bay area with one of the reasons of the lower office of civilization we have been there from the very beginning. he says right now that the national averages about 44%. here in san francisco and san jose the number hovers around 34%. i asked him,

this is nbc bay area news tonight. we are live in the fire zone in orange county for a first-hand look at the destruction. we will hear from some of the people who lost their homes in a few minutes. we start with new details about the kidnapping of a san jose baby boy. he was taken while his grandmother unloaded groceries on april 25. the prosecutors say text messages between the two people arrested suggest they tried to kidnap him three times before and there are the suspect there. these details are coming out today. prosecutors file the three additional charges of attempted kidnapping against these two men. according to documents from the court, they attempted to kidnap the boy on march 14 and he allegedly posed as a child protective services worker and showed up at the family's home and tried to take the baby. the family got suspicion so they called cps. the agency told the family this was bogus and don't hand over the baby and the second attempt happened a few weeks later on march 28 and this time inside a walmart.

a red flag warning in effect for parts of the bay area. our fire weather tracker, measuring the humidity, temperature, wind speeds and whenever we have red flag circles, they turn red. east bay, most of the red circles through the central valley similar to last week's setup. i don't think the winds will be as strong, but still solano county is included in that through 11:00 tomorrow. the winds in the higher elevations could gust over 40 miles per hour. we will track the hour by hour a little bit later. looks like the wind gusts are going to be lighter than that and solano county under a heat advisory until 11:00 tomorrow. so the hottest temperatures in that part of the bay area. take a look at tomorrow's highs. one more hot day. >>> hot temperatures, dry conditions have agencies across the bay area getting fire ready. in san francisco firefighters did some wild land fire training today with the state office of emergency services. while san francisco doesn't see many wildfires the crews are sometimes deployed to help in other areas. >> cali
