but if you take a look at what boeing says, boeing says, quote, the system is designed to be redundant and it performed like it was supposed to. so the backup systems did work and by all accounts, so far, this is not expected to impact the overall mission. but, ana, when you zoom out and take a look at all of the problems that this spacecraft has had from boeing, there was a first launch attempt to dock with the international space station back in 2019, and they had some major software glitches. it never even docked with the space station. then they tried to launch last august. that didn't happen because of some stuck valves. and so the reason this is all important, ana, is because nasa wants to make sure it has not one, but two vehicles capable of taking its astronauts up to the international space station. they don't want to be reliant upon russia to take its astronauts up there, which is what they did for about a decade. now, spacex has been very capable of doing it. they've done it seven times -- excuse me, five times so far, seven crude space flights total. so far boeing hasn't be

boeing said in a press conference following yesterday's launch that two of the 12 thrusters on board failed. as you pointed out, there were redundancies on board. they were able to course correct. it is on its way to rendezvous with the international space station as we speak. they will be looking into these issues. it takes a lot of time. the last issue that prevented a successful launch was a valve issue on board. that took eight months to solve. so if i was a betting person, i would bet a crude test launch will be happening more in 2023 than 2022. the reason this is so important, nasa wants redundancies here. they spent $4 billion to help birth this capsule on this mission. we are reliant on spacex dragon to get us back and forth to the international space station. luckily, their system has been running smoothly. they have done five missions to date the last two years. of course as we saw it's important to have redundancies when it comes to space travel. you never want to have your eggs all in one basket, jim. >> as they always say, space is hard. rachel crane, thanks so much. joi
