there are newly-released emails from ginni thomas who is married to justice clarence thomas. in those emails we see ginni thomas pressuring two arizona state lawmakers to upend the popular vote victory by president joe biden in 2020 in that state. cnn's ryan nobles has more. >> reporter: ginni thomas, the wife of sitting supreme court justice clarence thomas, is once again under fire for her political activism. this after a series of emails that she sent to lawmakers in arizona were revealed that show her pushing to get these lawmakers to try to intervene in sefr certification of the 2020 election. these emails, which were initially uncovered by "the washington post," showed that thomas used essentially a form letter from a website trying to push lawmakers to intervene in the 2020 election. what that email ended up saying to these lawmakers is that thomas and others were interested in them pushing for what they called a clean slate of electors to come from the state of arizona that would address what they viewed as problems with election fraud. now, this comes as cnn and othe

is this now clarence thomas's court? >> absolutely. you know, fundamentally the supreme court is about arithmetic. it's how you get to five votes. when clarence thomas joined the court in 1991, he didn't have five votes. he didn't have three votes in many cases. now there are five hard-core conservatives on that court, chief justice roberts often joins that group. and thomas has brought issues to the court that were seen as fringe ideas back in the early '90s, like overturning roe v. wade, like extensive individual rights under the second amendment to have guns, like broader opportunities to execute people in the most painful possible ways. thomas has advocated all of these positions, but the court has come to him. it's not really about how good thomas' ideas are or how bad they are. it's about five justices now agreeing with him. as the senior associate justice on the court, the longest tenured member on the court, he gets to assign the opinions like this dobbs case where he's the senior justice in the majority when the chief justice

that's clarence thomas now. clarence thomas sits to the chief's right. that means he's the senior associate justice. if the abortion case holds, that means that thomas assigned the opinion to alito. and that's a very different dynamic. those are two culture warriors together on the court. and roberts, increasingly is with sotomayor and breyer. but the power in the court is really shifting away from roberts because he's now aligned with the three liberals and thomas is aligned with the four other conservatives to make a new majority. >> how have the dynamics changed since the death of ruth bader ginsburg, since amy coney barrett joined the court? >> this is really -- some replacements on the court are -- all replacements are consequential. when steven breyer stepped down and he's being replaced by judge jackson, that is important. but this was epic. this was epic in its importance because at the end of president trump's term in 2020, justice ginsburg died. amy coney barrett was rushed through by mitch mcconnell. and that changed the court from a 5-4 major
