do you believe that is more about david perdue or about donald trump? >> well, i actually think it's about brian kemp. he has put on incredible leadership over the last four years. the best way to test a leader is under pressure and he has certainly felt the pressure over the last four years and i think georgians are proud of how we reacted during the pandemic, how we've dealt with the whipsawing economy, civil unrest. he's done a great job and i think he's going to be rewarded today handsomely by beating david perdue by a significant amount. >> if he does ha and wins by a significant amount, what does that suggest, if anything, about the strength , the potency of a donald trump endorsement this cycle? >> i think it's a huge sign that the republican party is moving on, and we're certainly going to send a message to the rest of the country, i feel like by every percentage point that brian kemp beats david perdue, and by all estimate it's going to be a lot, it's an extra hundred miles we gain ground spreading the message that it's time for a new direction

it's the second one he's done for david perdue. he hasn't been in the state of georgia for several weeks since late march when he held a rally for his hand picked challenger david perdue. what's interesting on election eve, if you look at the kemp campaign, it's what they're not saying. it's any mention of former president trump. this really has been the way that kemp has been operating through this campaign. he talking about his record and things he has done, pieces of legislation he's signed into law, being the first state to reopen. one thing he notably does not mention is the former president, any mention of 2020 and really he doesn't talk too much about david perdue until the end of his campaign stops. that's interesting because perdue has made 2020 the entire underpinning of his campaign. the former president perhaps more than any other individual has targeted brian kemp and tried to make him the villain to emerge out of 2020. if numbers are to be believed, that hasn't worked here in georgia. brian kemp holds a 30-plus point

david perdue was a long serving us senator and respected figure in georgia and he got wiped out. donald trump supporting senator perdue, running on the election results in 2,020. what does it tell us about donald trump? i think it says not less so much about donald trump as trump's base. carl is right. trump's base is about 30% of the republican electorate. what this suggests is governor kemp won because a lot of trump voters decided life goes on. politics moves on. they cannot spend their lives re-fighting the 2020 election. there are other issues. there is inflation. there is crime. governor kemp fought hard in the georgia election reform law, addressing many of these issues as did secretary of state raffensberger who was not inspected to win as well as he did in georgia. trump voters are sorting their way through their politics and it raises a question for donald trump himself. are his politics going to be centered on what he calls the rig to 2020 election or is he going to adjust himself to reality that we are in a new political era? will he begin to reflect that? paul: what

he had everything to do with david perdue challenging brian kemp in the race for governor. it is personal for trump. the polling not looking good for perdue, though. what do you see happening there? >> boris, it is a really important race. if you don't live in georgia and you think why do i care about this, it is because it is going to be one of the most important measures so far. i think in the primaries, about how much of a lock trump still has in shaping the discussion around 2024, how much are republican primary voters still focused on the lie that the 2020 election was stolen, how much is that in their minds and how much do they identify that with the candidates themselves? this say big race. there is another big race in georgia on tuesday, in the primaries, and that's for secretary of state. doesn't have as much profile as the governor's race, but that is another one where the incumbent brad raffensperger was a top target of donald trump and governor kemp and brad raffensperger, they're not like liberal republicans, these are conservative republicans. their sin was no

perdue, is. >> david, the advice from former president trump to dr. oz to just declare victory, even as the votes are being counted, is this the template for trump-aligned candidates moving forward? >> well, we'll see. it is a familiar tune from trump, obviously, which is, if you don't win, claim that it was stolen from you. and you know, it is kind of ironic that you're ending up in this race so hotly contested in a situation where mail-in ballots yet to be counted could determine the outcome. so, it lines up neatly with his theory that somehow there's something wrong with these ballots, which there's no evidence to support. but this issue of the legitimacy of the elections is very much the dividing line. you know, even mccormick was not willing to say whether or not the last election was legitimate. so, you know, what we see around the country is table stakes for republican candidates generally is whether they're willing to at least show some nodding, you know, sent to the idea that there was something amiss in the last election. now, in georgia, th

tia, you have this new piece out in the ajc titled where in the world is david perdue. he's not on the air. his campaign is not spending really any money on ads, he almost disappeared from the campaign trail. ratcheted down campaign appearances. we know donald trump is not coming to throw him a lifeline any time soon. what's up? >> yeah. you know, david perdue, after we wrote that item, did announce some public appearances, but still small to gop county groups. it's not what you would consider a campaign that's roaring into election day. very different than governor kemp who is holding bigger events with big name surrogates coming to campaign with him. as you mentioned, it looks like donald trump is starting to manage expectations and withdraw a little bit from former senator purdue because he doesn't like to lose. that's what looks like his endorsed candidate, ma might happen on tuesday. again, you know, it's not over until it's over, but all the signs are indicating that not only are the polls showing us that governor kemp is going to win, but reading the tea leaves f

but now, it appears that david perdue is heading for defeat. trump appears to have abandoned him at this stage. how much damage could this have on trump's kingmaker power, do you think? >> this would be the biggest disappointment of the primary season, in all likelihood. there was no one, as he noted that he wanted to be more than the republican government. who he felt, acted inappropriately, by upholding the law and certifying joe biden's victory in that swing state in 2020. but the candidate that he chose to run against, that he basically hand-picked to run against -- david perdue has been totally lackluster. he's been kind of a campaigner without much energy. he has not raised a lot of money. there really is not a case against him in georgia except for trump's -- so it's meant to be a disappointment. but it's, i think as we talked about last week, it's a mistake to read any individual race as a sign that trump's hold is loosening. is the ability of any individual to win every race they endorse has simply never existed. into b, the broader di

donald trump is backing kemp's opponent, very publicly david perdue. he made kemp one of his prime targets for the midterms. joining us now, patricia murphy. this news broke just this morning. what do you make of it? >> yeah, this is huge news. we have known for a long time that republicans would start to line up behind brian kemp as he heads toward his primary on may 24th. we did not expect for mike pence to be coming in and putting in such a big public show of support for brian kemp. we got the news today and broke the news today that pence will be coming in the day before the primary, he'll do get out the vote valley for brian kemp and that will be in his challenge from against rather daperdue. pence is coming down on the side of brian kemp. >> to remind people why donald trump is going after brian kemp. brian kemp, the republican governor of georgia, refused to do anything special to overturn the results or try to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which donald trump lost in georgia, and trump has never forgiven him. now you have the former
