and no sky with senator fischer mentioned that and our airports. how will you meet this lechallenge? >> this is a national issue affecting the whole domestic aviation industry. disproportionately affecting smaller regionall carriers. even major carriers have schedules on regional routes. the larger carriers tend to offer better salaries that can track these pilots. safety of course is such an important part of aviation and that leads to the necessity of regulated standards. that doesn't mean we can't act to boost pilot recruitment and retention. i want to recognize a lot of players have been at the ayforefront of this taking steps to expand training and recruitment of pilots. we have tools that we can use as well and the faa will shortly be releasing notices of funding opportunitysi for aircraft pilos workforce development grants program which is one example. we take federal funding to help boost that. it won't be a quick fix. we have got to work on shoring up that workforce. >> do we have enough pilots trained or is a situation where we don't have

senator fischer, you are recognized for your questions. sen. fischer: good morning mr. secretary. it's nice to see you. in march west filed a 90 day notice of its intent to terminate service at 29 essential air service communities. nebraska's three communities served by skywest, kearny, north platte, and sky bluff. essential air service is critical for these rural communities. last week i sent a letter requesting video to continue issuing a hold in order for these nebraska airports requiring skywest to perp berm -- perform at the minimum service required by statute. will you continue issuing orders to skywest and ensure their conjectural obligations are until providing service to rural communities? has acted them to continue -- has ordered them to continue service and we will continue to respond. there will be extensions to make sure that the public is served. >> thank you. i hope you will work with my office, so we can preserve the essential air service program that ensures the smaller communities across my state, and across the country, can access larger aviation networks. i fou
