nbc news garrett haake is there. what are you hearing? >> reporter: you can hear the angry response that they're getting at this convention. there are a couple hundred demonstrators telling folks attending this conference which contains 14 acres of guns and gear that we want them out of their city. we've heard folks saying this is not the time and place or anything like appropriate to be holding this event in downtown houston today, just a couple hundred miles from uvalde. talking to attendees in the convention inside, it might surprise people to know their views on what if anything washington can do to restrict the ownership or somewhat make it safer are more nuanced than the hardline second amendment protection that's their organization represents. here's some of the folks i talked to this morning. >> no one can own a weapon unless you're 25 years old. >> 25. >> 25. that's my opinion. okay. now, my kid -- like i said, he grew up with being able to shoot automatic weapons. any kind of weapons you get your hands on, you can do that. but h

i want to bring in senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. what now? >> this has been a month's long process to get giuliani in. he is under subpoena. the committee had been negotiating with him about questions, privilege, his role as attorney for the then president. ha could he talk about, what could he not. the rug was really pulled out from under them yesterday on this issue about recording the interview. giuliani and his attorney indicating that they were worried content might be leaked out or taken out of context. they're trying to get giuliani to talk and use all enforcement options available to them. they don't really have enforcement options and that's been the problem from the word go. they can recommend contempt and holding giuliani in contempt of congress. mark meadows they recommended holding in contempt in january and the department of justice hasn't acted on that referral or on the more recent referrals of two other trump aides. the committee's really a bit stuck here. they want giuliani to testify, and he knows a lot about a lot of diffe

. >> nbc news correspondent garrett haake joins me now from outside uvalde memorial hospital. i know you were down there to cover that primary in the rio grande valley that is happening tonight between cuellar and jessica cisneros. what is the latest there from uvalde? >> chris, we got into town about an hour ago. there are about three areas of activity in what feels like an eerily quiet small town tonight. there is the hospital behind me, which took in 14 patients today and treated most of them, i think he would, say successfully. they were transferred to five hospitals in san antonio, larger trauma centers that may be able to care for them. forward is charged, three will spend the night tonight. and there is the civic center, which is another center of activity in town tonight. that is where parents were told to go to try to meet up with their children. they were asked not to go to the elementary school but to go to the civic center, where they could be reunited with their kids who were safe and well. and then there is the third center of activity, the one where no one wante

garrett haake, grateful for having you spend time with us. >> i want to pick up on what garrett said about red flag laws. the gunman was a high school drop out with no known history of mental health problems. red flag laws are part of the solution and i don't know anybody that opposes them, but they are not by themselves the answer. where are your thoughts today? where is your head on the conversation? >> the red-flag laws are a no-brainer and they're a small piece. you know, i'm working on a piece right now. i'm just sort of as toundzed that in the history of political -- american political movements, gun control is probably the biggest failure. it started in the '60s, and i just looked at the stats. two-thirds of american wanted to outlaw the handguns. people want to google that because that's impossible and inconceivable. most americans wanted to get rid of any kind of handgun. that's when we started and the gun control people have lost so badly all of the way in the other direction. not only did they fail everything it's completely obliterated. the dumbest thing they ever did was

joining me is garrett haake and pete williams. pete let's start with you. >> reporter: he said it would be absolutely foolish for the person responsible for this leak to think it will have any effect on the court's decision-making process. he said what upsets him is it might give the wrong impression of the court's workforce. he said he hopes the actions of one bad apple won't do that. and he called the breach a betrayal and breach of trust and he ordered the marshal to launch an investigation. she is the court's security officer and is in charge of the court's police force. the court has so far declined to provide any details about how the leak investigation is being conducted. i would note josh gerstein of politico, who co-wrote this bombshell story about the alito draft, he said as far as he knows nobody from the court has contacted politico about the leak. i don't think that's very surprising. i don't think there's any way politico is going to reveal anything about its source. >> absolutely. garrett, i interviewed senate murph

garrett haake is live with us in austin, texas. >> reporter: jessica told me abortion had been a key point of contrast in the race. the draft opinion that came out that was leaked out yesterday has heightened that moment of contrast. she thinks he is out of step with the democratic majority and that leadership's endorsements should reflect that. here is some of what she told me. >> i think right now, especially with everyone, including democratic leadership really trying to make the point that we need a pro-choice majority, he is not a part of that pro-choice majority. we need a champion for our rights and freedoms. on the ballot on may 24th, that's our campaign. >> reporter: leadership generally makes it their business to support incumbents. tonight, the house whip, the number three house democrat will hold a rally in san antonio for henry. this is very much a race that's going to divide the democratic party. it has done so. now on this issue in particular, we see that contrast. >> this was happening the last time he ran for re-election. the district that he is in is not -- what is

joining me from texas native texan, himself, garrett haake, political reporter patrick fitech from san antonio. so, cisneros is a lot closer this time around, garrett. how are the issues of the day playing into this race? and what about abortion? >> yeah. just even having forced a runoff brings her so much closer than she was two years ago. for the cisneros campaign this has been a three-year effort to chip away at support in this district, where he is borderline legend ear. i'm in lor reda, the seat of the district, the seat of his power. you see it with the voters we talked to. this is someone well established. the only texas democrat, sends a lot of money back to the district. his positions, while more contefb e servetive than his fellow democrats in the house particularly on abortion is making the bet that they are more in line with the voters in this district. cisneros has gotten a huge boost of enthusiasm and fundraising around the abortion rights issue since that draft opinion on roe was released. that doesn't seem to be the issue motivating most of the voters here in the races

garrett haake is with us live in austin. also with us, victoria soto-dean and michael steele, former change of the rnc. garrett, let me start with you. we are seeing abortion be a top issue for voters. how is this impacting candidates in the primaries? >> reporter: beto is trying to raise this against the governor. it's playing out in the primaries in texas as well, specifically in a runoff southwest where i am right now in texas' 28th district where you have a self-described pro-life democratic congressman. he represented that district since 2005. he is the only congressional democrat to vote against the women's health protection act when that was on the floor last year. he is challenged by jessica cisneros who says he is out of touch. he is getting hammered by progressives. he told me they just don't get this district. here is what he had to say. >> the problem is that they in their own minds have an idea what a, quote, democrat should be. they want us to vote with the democratic party 100% of the time. i don't do that. i
