what did george carlin mean to you? >> i started listening to his records when i was ten years old and back then, his records, he broke down curse words which you love when you're a little kid, somebody telling you that it's okay to say things, he certainly was very anti-authority, he used to say, you know, to parents, never teach their kids to challenge authority, because they are authority. and i think the way he looked at the world, kind of inserted the software in my mind that lot of comedians minds about how to write jokes and how to break things down. >> and the documentary, the movie is a real deep dive into george carlin, the people will find out a lot of things about him that they did not know before. what did you learn about them that you didn't know before that really surprised you while making it? >> it was interesting about him, he talked a lot about the big issues, but he wasn't someone who talked about his personal life, and he never talked about being a parent or a husband, and he didn't get into great d

do you have a favorite incarnation of george carlin? >> the ending got really dark and people are like, he's too dark and would warn us, like, the game is rigged and he talked a lot about polarization and he said, you know, they want us fighting so that they can run away with all the money and people said, oh, man, he's really going for it. now you look back and you go, maybe he wasn't dark enough. things that really get -- >> he was prescient. >> yes. >> his work is to this day still so relevant and so timeless. i can't believe it's been 14 years since he actually passed away. why do you think he still remains as relevant as he was then? >> i think he found a way to sum up big issues, because it's weird. when something happens in the news he seems to be the person whose clip goes around and some of those clips are 30 years old like when we were talking about roe versus wade, suddenly his clip goes around and it was all about him saying, you know, when you're pre-born, you're good and when you're preschool, you're screwed. and suddenly

it points more towards how george carlin was. the direction of this country and as a comedian, we know him for a lot of routines like the seven words you can't say on television, tv and radio parity, but later on in his career, even though there was always a political under crime to his material, he is somebody who became increasingly disillusioned with where he saw america going. he was certainly unsparing about how he spoke about that in his comedy. i think this makes him a touchstone for people on either end of the spectrum to this very day. >> you write about all of this in your article. it is fascinating. let's talk about the hbo documentary that is putting him back on the spotlight. it is taking a closer look at his life. the strong convictions that described his career. you quoted carlin daughter, kelly, who said that her father was 99% progressive. you also said that he is embraced by person people who spanned the political spectrum. how did he spend the divide then and how does this stand now? >> i think that there was a
