and some of the strongest counties for j.d. vance last night. if we look at the general, tim ryan will be the democratic nominee. he had no problem winning that primarily last night, and take a look at what ryan is up against. an 8-point win for trump, and since trump emerged on the scene ohio has changed and transformed politically, moved very dramatically in the republican direction. tim ryan's backyard, young's town, ohio, this is where tim ryan's base is, and youngstown, you can see that donald trump won this county by two points in 2020. eight years before when barack obama was running for re-election against mitt romney, this same county, barack obama won it -- that's not writing very well. i will try it over here. barack obama won it by 28 points. so it went from democrat to winning it nearby by 30 to donald trump carrying it. we saw a shift like that, sort of appellation ohio, some of the biggest shifts we saw anywhere in the country, they transformed ohio. it's a very uphill fight for him against j.d. vance in the election, and that's n

j.d. vance's victory there. what does it mean in trump's influence in galvanizing voters? do you think it is a sign we'll see more of trump in future primary battles? >> for sure. i think that it was a massive win for the former president and it really does show the influence of his endorsement. and ohio was such a great example of this. really a test for other potential trump endorsements and other candidates that he has backed. because ohio was such a crowded primary. j.d. vance really did not have the support that people thought he would need to get him over the hump until trump came in and threw his support behind him. and also, i mean, club for growth, a lot of these other massive conservative groups were going against him. and so it was a body blow really to any anti-trumpers or any groups that tried to, you know, come up against trump. and it is going to be i think a crucial thing that shows others across the country right now that trump still is the kingmaker, he is still incredibly influential in republican politics and i've covered him for several years during th

j.d. vance the trump-back senate candidate won the ohio primary tuesday night. vance will face democratic congressman tim ryan who won the democratic primary last night. joining to us break that down, nbc news political correspondent steve kornacki. steve what can you tell us about the results in ohio? >> it was the first clean test of donald trump's strength with republican voters. this is an open seat for the u.s. senate. almost all of these candidates, the big exception was matt dolan, sought trump's endorsement and catered towards trump's message. being the line, the differencemaker. vance, obviously, as you say, the man who got trump's endorsement. when you look at the map, the maroon counties are the counties that vance won. there's breadth to his victory geographically cheer. but where he really ran up the score, i'm going to draw roughly a region here, this portion of ohio, this is the appalachian region of ohio. there's 31 counties there considered part of appalachia in ohio. it's where donald trump did the best in the general election in ohio. it's bef

it wasn't j.d. vance, it was a candidate named undecided. voters still are not sure who they want to vote for, there is this 25% chunk that's undecided. especially when you look at margins of error, 3% either direction. this is a candidate field at the top that is really muddy and it's because you have vance, mandel, gibbons and taken are all fighting for the pro trump elaine. so the question is where are those undecided going to break? if they break primarily for vance, that's good for him and i think that's why they're hoping the tremendous meant does. but dolan is sitting there making a different bet saying i think all of those folks are going to sort of tangle up at the top and split a large piece of the pie but a piece of the pie nonetheless. the trump voter. and dolan is hoping that there is enough looked over that establishing republican, the sort of anti trump's republican voters that may have back someone like report man that if he has delayed all to himself. then maybe he can jump the back. >> then cameras are, thank you, good to s

look, no, this is a win for trump and for j.d. vance, but don't read into too much. i mean, trump owns the ohio gop sort of, dewine won, the incumbent republican governor on the other side, the flip side is that the trump adjacent gop gubernatorial candidates did not win. trump is going to do best when he endorses in multicandidate scramble primaries. that's where his candidate can stand out and emerge to get the guy up to 30%, 32%. but winning a majority like in georgia, for example, where brian kemp is running comfortably ahead of david pe perdue, the trump-endorsed candidate, trump isn't going to fly. so it's a state by state and really, multiprimary versus incumbent primary issue at play. >> let me break down the wonk and put a -- bring a little more perspective. j.d. vance, did, he was propelled from third place, 11% in march up to a third of the vote. that's great. but he won around 350,000 votes. there are nearly 6 million voters in ohio in the last general election, and so it speaks to the fact that even with trump's endorsement he just gets a third, and you'

we saw what happened with j.d. vance. he got a major above, obviously. pulled out a win in the primary this past week. so, the question is, how much is this trump endorsement going to do for us? whether voters telling you? >> there's so many echoes from last night, talking to folks before that rally compared to when i was in ohio two weeks ago in hesitation that people had towards j.d. vance. he wasn't a trump loyalist. he had said that. yes that bad things about trump in the past. there's a 22% bump in 18 days, it got him the wind. yesterday, i was hearing the same thing from these trump supporters in pennsylvania, who had suspicions about his conservative roots. he had praise the obamas in the past. and i will let you hear from one of those voters to give a bit of an idea. >> some of the things that he has backtracked on in the years past, he says one thing today, but said things years ago that were different. so that's my only concern. he just needs to sound more conservative. he doesn't sound conservative, and he needs to backup when he says. that's
