jeff flock is there. jeff? what are people paying more for? reporter: what are they not paying more for , ashley? i'll tell you, everything from the beach chairs to cheese balls to the rides, to henna tattoos, picking up some trash this morning too. ashley: [laughter] reporter: you never know what's going to happen. this is the famed casino pier in seaside. i used to ride that rollercoaster, actually the rollercoaster i used to ride fell into the atlantic during superstorm sandy, back when i was a kid, that's a new one. they had a huge year at the jersey shore last year, and they're hoping they can top that take a look at the numbers from last year. 48 million visitors to the jersey shore, that was an increase from the previous year of 24%. $20 billion is what they spent, almost 30% increase from the previous year, but this year , here's what people are saying. they say that because of high gas prices, they're going to spend 32% of them say they are spending lesson retail, 31% say they are going to spend less on entertainment, 22% say they are

jeff flock on how they're getting ready to have fun in new jersey. hi, jeff. >> it's supposed to, neil, be a tremendously great year here along the jersey shore. if, that is, people can afford the gas to get here. i'm walking the boards in seaside heights, new jersey. you can see her the casino pier where i myself as a young man spent a lot of time misspent youth getting in trouble. now the trouble is found at the gas station. take a look at the numbers. another all-time record for gas. it's not moved much in the last week or so, it's 1.50 more than last year. the fear is that begins to bite into things like retail and food and drink and lodging and things that people say they are going to spend less money on. a third of people say that they're going to spend less on retail, less on entertainment than they did because of the high gas price. we talked to an expert on travel that says people to have money in their pockets, so they're going to spend, at least the beginning of the summer. listen. >> whether it's gas, hotels, air fare, food, inflation, it

let's first go to jeff flock what he's seeing on the pennsylvania turnpike. jeff? reporter: neil, i just switched over to the atlantic city expressway, actually, as we head down to the shore, with a lot of other folks, perhaps you see the picture from out on the road not too crowded at the moment, but going to be a busy day. that said, let me let you in on one new piece of information from the energy department, which subjects maybe gas prices are getting high enough to discourage demand. this is something called the , well it could be called demand destruction, the part of the energy department they say the demand, this week, and a rolling average down 2.7%. it's the lowest this time of the year since 2013, accepting the pandemic year, so maybe, we're getting to the point of pain. today, gas prices actually declined by one one-tenth of one cent the first time since may 10 that we haven't had a new record in gas prices. 39 million people expected to travel in some form this memorial day holiday. 35 million of them by car, and the triple a says right now, people are

jeff flock is. he joins us out of philadelphia. jeff? >> seeing plenty, neil, this is the road out of philadelphia to atlantic city. joins up with the atlantic city express way. look to the left as you see the folks in the line over there already way backed up. 39 million people plus going to travel, air, sea, land. it's about an 8.3% increase. 35 million by roads. that's despite the high gas prices that you mentioned. today we came down .1 of 1 cent in gas prices. the first time in a month it's come down. why is that? why are people still drive something we talk to aaa that says people don't have much choice. listen. >> it creates pain and most of the country does not have a viable public transportation alternative and they're getting in their vehicles and creating the traffic problems that we're seeing all the time now. you combine that with the busy holiday weekend and the roads, they're going to be very busy indeed. despite high gas prices. >> and yeah, despite the situation right now in philadelphia where you see the rain continuing

jeff flock is driving on the new jersey turnpike. jeff, good morning to you. is the spike in gas prices making people change their plans at all this weekend? reporter: well you know, the surveys that they've done said a good healthy number said they were thinking about it but i tell you when it comes right down to it, it doesn't look like it. it seems like despite the prices , and you know, we did get a break on prices overnight this is the turnpike, maybe take a look up the front, well we're not on like highway 9 like bruce springsteen there, but this is the turnpike in new jersey, so it seems like there's going to be healthy travel at the start of the holiday travel season, the summer travel season, but where it's going to end up i don't know. looking at the prices they haven't changed much in the last week, but in fact came down a tenth of a penny overnight, so beats what the have been happening. we are a buck and a half, almost $1.60 more than we were this time last year. there is some evidence though of demand destruction. maybe people are still traveling

jeff flock has the latest from the roads and phil keating on the friendly skies. jeff? >> we were rolling down the garden state parkway headed to the jersey shore beaches. you can see looking out, clear sailing. that may not be the case over much of the nation this memorial day holiday. 39 million people plus planning to travel according to the aaa. that's an 8.3% increase from last year. the vast majority travel by cars. we're 35 million or so. despite high gas prices, a lot of people out on the roads. gas prices obviously having hit their highest level in history. but folks, still driving according to the aaa. listen to the aaa's robert st. claire. >> folks want to get out and do something. that's why despite record high gasoline prices, 4.60 per gallon nationwide, we've never seen that before. that is why folks are getting out and doing things. >> that said, there's some indication that perhaps motorists are reaching the point of paying. take a look at these numbers. 8.8 billion barrel a days. that's down 2.7% to the lowest level it's been this time of the year since

to mount laurel new jersey where jeff flock is at an ev-go charging station. jeff with the record high gasoline prices i'm interested to know how the increase in demand for electric vehicles is trending. reporter: it is trending up, not only in the u.s. , but all around the world, liz, and by the way yeah, the ev-go charging stations here, it's curious in new jersey, you can't pump your own gas, but you can pump your own electricity. that's the way it goes here. yeah, take a look at these numbers in terms of interest. ernst & young just did a big study worldwide and found actually though the interest is up in the u.s. , it's actually on the low side compared to the rest of the world. about 29% of u.s. car buyers now say they want an ev. australia a little bit more but if you look at the whole rest of the world, more than 50% of car buyers now say they want to buy an ev. here in the u.s. , registrations are up, the numbers are up, there are now 1.44 million ev's on the road an increase of 40% from last year, but if you took all of the cars on the road and total

jeff flock in pennsylvania. look we're heading into memorial day weekend. are the people changing their travel plans because of these high gas prices? >> well, yeah, the answer to your question is yes, but maybe not in the way that you would think, stuart. take a look at these survey answers from folks at the travel website arrivalist. they tell us that people are taking fewer day trips now, but they are actually taking longer trips and because of the high airfares, they are actually driving more, and in fact, their projection for this memorial day travel is that about 38 million people will be traveling by road , that's an 8% increase over last year despite the high gas prices, and it could top pre- pandemic levels. it's ugly out there, in terms of the gas prices. we now have six states over $5 an average gallon of gas, california is the one over $6 an average. it's crazy, and going to get crazier. there's that prediction from jpmorgan one of their analysts who says by august it's going to be $6.20 for the average gallon of gas nationwide. that's a 35% inc

jeff flock is live in philadelphia tracking the story for us this morning. hi, jeff. >> outside independence hall this morning, dana. high prices, no kidding. and this is an historic site, of course, the birthplace of our democracy and an important tourist destination this summer and places concerned the high prices will have a chilling effect on visits to tourist locations like this one. good news i guess in the short term it doesn't appear to be the case for memorial day. look at these numbers from arrivalist saying about 38 million people will take to the roads this memorial day weekend. that's about an 8% increase and a topper over prepandemic highs in terms of car travel. the worst in terms of gasoline? no kidding, california tops the list once again. now the only state over $6 on average for regular. states in the west largely make up most of the hot spots and here is the worst news, i guess. that is an analyst from j.p. morgan said she thinks by august the national average for a gallon of regular will be $6.20. that is crazy talk. and rick perry speak

but first, one of those 40 million americans taking to the roads is our jeff flock. he's live on the garden state parkway. jeff, how is it looking there? >> headed south, john, more ways than one. take a picture what it looks like through the front windshield here, yeah, traffic jam. it's supposed to be a traffic jam. as you point out, 40 million people. of that, 35 million travelling by car. overall, the figure is up about 8 or 10%. seems people have not reached the point of pain. overnight we came down the first time in weeks in terms of gas price, actually over a month we have gone actually down. we went down 1/10 of $0.01. not much of a decrease. it's still a buck and a half more than it was this time last year. one possibility that things could be changing, something we call demand destruction. not sure if it's in place yet but here is the deal. the number of gallons of demand weekly rolling average, energy department keeps track, it is at its lowest point since 2013 for the same time period. that tells us maybe that people are pulling back a little bit, driving

first we start on our sky high gas and oil prices, jeff flock is in pennsylvania for us with more on that. hi, jeff. reporter: hello to you, jackie. yeah, as edward lawrence reported at the outset of your broadcast the president considering a release of something that a lot of people didn't even know existed. that's something called the northeast home heating oil reserve. similar to the spr, home heating oil and reserve, a lot of people don't know, that product is very similar, almost the same as diesel. so a potential impact there, although we just talked to the triple a robert sinclair who says just like the release from the spr, a release from this reserve might also have very little impact. take a listen. >> the president has released oil from the strategic petroleum reserve, but that was a million barrels per-day, and globally consumption is about 100 millioo it does not make that big a difference. it's a literal drop in the bucket compared to what global demand and consumption is reporter: and because of that, it has been everyday since may 10, jackie, that we've had an increas

jeff flock from fox business live in philadelphia with the details on this. >> good morning to you. they make more money from refining jet fuel in the facility where they store the jet fuel for philadelphia national airport. you haven't seen jet fuel. it is on fire. not literally and not in a good way. 4.49 a year ago, 6.90 in may up 54%. it gets passed along in the form of airfare to passengers, they were up 19% air fares last month. booksing down last month and some sign of capitulation to the high prices. people traveling by car instead. that's what they'll do this memorial day holiday. 82% of travelers will go by car. 87% say they'll travel with somebody else in a car pool this year trying to save money. 11% will go by electric car. i leave you with a piece of good news. that is that overnight gasoline prices went up over a tick about 2/10% still at 4.59 but still high. like ordering a diet coke with your hot fudge sunday. it is nice but doesn't amount to much. >> dana: exactly, jeff. thank you so much. >> martha: the announcement that john kirby is moving from the pentagon to t
