joining me now for this discussion is alice stewart and keisha lance bottoms. former mayor of atlanta. in the conversations you have with democrats do you sense an opening here to work with republicans with moderate steps to prevent future shootings even if it's not what democrats ultimately want? >> i do think there is an opening. my sense is that everyone recognizes that there will have to be compromise on both sides. we know that previously the senate passed an assault weapons ban. 1994. that was passed by then senator joe biden. i would be very surprised if we get that far this time but i think everyone recognizes that the country's calling for even the smallest steps of improvement whether in background checks or other areas to agree on and it's important to signal that congress is willing to work together. >> there's second amendment posturing in your party. let's listen about the attempt to expand red flag laws. >> we are trying to do with the red flag law is enforce the law before the law is broken. it's difficult to assess a threat. if they threat with

the former mayor of atlanta, keisha lance bottoms, and former congressman charlie dent. good evening to both of you. charlie, pence is backing governor kemp. trump is backing the former senator perdue out of revenge because he is mad at kemp for not doing more to overturn the 2020 election results. yet kemp in the latest polls leading big-time. what do you expect to see tomorrow night? >> i expect to see governor kemp win renomination rather handily. mike pence obviously jumped in here pretty late, and it's pretty clear what his intentions are. he's annoyed with the former president, donald trump, over the january 6th situation, and so pence is going to go in there and show that he's on the winning side here and prove that trump's endorsement doesn't mean anything in the state of georgia, at least in the governor's race. so pence is clearly considering a run for the white house and even made clear today that, you know, the former president's decision about running won't affect his. so this looks like they're starting to -- they're baring their fangs at one another, the f

"the new york times" says mccarthy met with trump three hours at mar lar go, and trump kept referring to him as the speaker. these tapes keep coming out with him saying these horrible things about trump. it seems okay so far. i mean, can the relationship withstand this continued assault? >> not only can it, it already is. obviously, these tapes have come out and kevin mccarthy moved quickly to solidify his relationship with donald trump. whatever you think of his comments and the tapes and the aftermath of january 6th, kevin mccarthy has done what he needs to do to keep perhaps his most important person happy, and that's donald trump. donald trump is issuing a number of endorsements to key house republicans who are winning their primaries. he had a good record in ohio just this week. kevin mccarthy has been instrumental in getting those endorsements done. one thick that's driving the unity between mccarthy and trump is the idea that republicans are on the cusp of retaking the house an
