what were you going to say about mike pence? >> i was going to say -- i was going to say, look, mike pence has wanted to run for president for a long time. before donald trump, before the idea of running for president was a twinkle in donald trump's eye, mike pence was sitting in indiana, thinking about how he could eventually run for president. he had done a lot of things to basically try to become a standard bearer for a sort of what used to be the kind of evangelical base of the party, or the evangelical -- traditionally, evangelical conception of that kind of a republican. as a house member, you knew him then, as then governor of indiana. he has always, i thought, lacked a certain kind of set of candidate skills and charisma that would have made him a plausible presidential force. but it is clear he's always nurtured those ambitions. the notion there has been this clean break with trump, the way they finally reached the breaking point when trump continued to trash him over january 6th, he has is liberated, to some extent, to

he is going to get the headline, oh, mike pence's candidate beat donald trump's candidate. but the polls have shown this race going this way for a long time and you don't see mike pence weighing in against trump in a lot of other contentious gop primaries across the country. so a little bit of a misnomer there but clearly mike pence is trying to look tough against trump in case he runs against him in 2024. >> and i also want to ask you about sort of the back drop to all this, which is voter restrictions. i think there is a question about what impact they will have and whether they will drive moor democratic voters to the polls and certainly stacey abrams has worked hard on sort of overcoming all the restrictions while a lot of democrats have said that it is actually boxing out a lot of black voters. what are you hearing on that? >> i think it will be a big test tonight to see sort of what that means. of course this is a primary, so the people who show up to primaries will be the most sort of passionate and motivated folks who go, you know, out of their way to make sure that

doing in georgia is blazing the trail that mike pence himself wants to go down in 2024. you have two politicians here that at least in some ways owe their national political prominence to donald trump. kemp came to prominence during the trump years and was endorsed by trump. both of them broke with trump after the 2020 election. so, if brian kemp can pull this off in georgia and be authentic and serve and be that kind of republican and win a primary and beat the stacey abrams team in november, that is the kind of message mike pence is going to try to make in 2024. it makes a lot of sense for pence to be there. and if kemp pulls this off, that is the blueprint people like mike pence are going to have to follow if they want to challenge trump. >> what i find interesting, nina, is the idea that brian kemp is not focusing on the rehashing of a former election. and it seems to be working for him, at least compared to perdue. and on the other side, his eventual opponent, who is running a non-contested race, stacey abrams, she's been focused on the fact she believes it was not

brian kemp has the support of mike pence, george w. bush, the nra, the republican governor's association, david purdue has trump, sarah palin. this is the trump guard of the republican party versus the old establishment guard. we may get scores in 202 2, but i think it's going to take through the primaries of 2024. >> never did i think two years ago purdue would be the party of marjorie taylor greene. he is a very traditional chamber of commerce type of republican. of course he had a very close relationship with the former president when trump was in office, but still, it's just a little bit shocking to me that politics does a lot of things to a lot of people and the fact that purdue has said that trump called him over and over again and that is why he is in this race, that's not enough for most voters. >> and he knows better than perhaps anyone else in the state of georgia how if former president trump comes in and talks about election being stolen, how that can affect your race moving forward. i'm hearing from republicans they think
