so, as i mentioned you have a book on newt gingrich, books on ronald reagan, you have books on mary washington. you have a book on 1941. and, now you have a book on 1945. why did you not just write a book about world war ii as a whole? >> that is a good question. i do not know if i know the answer. it was inspiration one day. i had this inspiration one day that there have been many books written about world war ii. there have been many books written about december 7th 1941. -- is the standard by which every other book has measured. it is an absolutely marvelous book. nobody had ever written, to my knowledge, a book about the domestic side of what was going on in the united states during the month of december, and how it radically changed because we changed completely. we changed governmentally, economically politically, culturally. we changed every which way because of that month. and, so, i pitch the idea to my publisher. they liked the idea very much, i wrote it and took three or four years to write it, we came out to good reviews and a new york times bestseller. i did not have a plan to wri

newt gingrich is forecasting a red wave in november for republicans. let's watch. >> i think we'll pick up between 25 and 70 seats in the house. we'll probably pick up 4 seats in the senate. if you are in a district that biden carried by less than 15 or 20 points you are in great danger as a democrat. >> harris: the speaker's grim prediction comes as a national poll shows democrats are up by only 1 point in the generic vote for congress. look at that. they're in a statistical tie right there. republicans now hold an edge on the congressional ball wrote for the first time since 2014 in an npr poll. that shows independents favor the gop by seven points on that generic ballot question. how do you strategize for this one? you can't ignore it. you need a strategy. what does it look like? >> i think one of the ways that you strategize around these grim numbers is you talk about what you've done in your respective district and talk about how redistricting has hurt and squeezed democratic voters into particular districts so i would be curious based upon gingri

>> ross perot, the seeds of ross perot came from newt gingrich, if you will. the opportunities there. it was frustrating. remember the challenges in new hampshire where the president was challenged within his own party which gave, oxygen to ross perot. that was a frustrating thing. i think if ross perot had not run, i do think that george h. w. bush would have won reelection. i'm not sure if the united states would be as unified as we think it would be it would not be what it is today would not have been divisive as it is today today would be a lot less trouble i think the challenge of the seeds of our democracy, they were actually sown when ross perot ran from the right and ran at the populist. kind of upset the apple car. i don't think -- they were very few people that george h. w. bush didn't really call friends. ross perot would be one. he was remarkable, he didn't remember most people that were his enemies were his enemies. oh no, no, no, he was pretty good. one story, i remember after a tough vote, we had just barely won in the senate the president invit

it's unthinkable now but they did with the republican congress and newt gingrich. if you remember the 1996 election, bill clinton won easily going away in fact. so the white house has to pay attention to the numbers. investors business daily, 29% approval on his handling of the economy. we're talking joe biden. that's like nixon's last day kind of territory when you talk about approval in the 20s. when the president blames vladimir putin and the russian invasion of ukraine for the inflation and then the nbc news poll, 6% of voters believe putin is to blame while most americans blame joe biden. ask jimmy carter what happened with the inflation. he's the last democratic one-tern president, martha. >> martha: joe, you make a gray point. we have seen pivots in the past. there's been a lot of people including mark penn who has said you need to pivot. then i see two pieces out of "the washington post" back-to-back. one says the president is engaging in magical thinking when it comes to the reasons for inflation. that he basically needs to look in the mirror and face the
