joining me now from capitol hill ali vitali and peter alexander. ali, to you. why didn't senate democrats just take up a more narrow bill that senators collins and murkowski could have gotten behind and perhaps senator manchin? >> that was one of the questions at the start of the push for democrats was how they wanted this bill to fail. no matter what, they weren't going to get 60 votes to actually overcome a filibuster on this. the way in which the bill failed would have been bipartisan in the positive direction had they gone with a bill that was narrower in focus and, frankly, more conservative in ethos in the protections it gave, specifically, a bill pushed by collins and murkowski, that they are talking with democrats at this point about but at the same time democratic leadership in the senate said they didn't want to make this first vote about that because they wanted it to be meaningful and because they wanted to have that stark contrast going into the midterms. to them, this was a way to energize the democratic base ahead of november. at the same time, i

joining me now to discuss this, my co-chief white house correspondent, peter alexander. peter, what do you think we are going to hear from president biden today? yesterday, he had choice words for trump supporters. today, he will tout the economy and the jobs numbers. >> reporter: that's right. the president leaving the beltway on his way to ohio, a state that could play a roll in determining congress. he wants to demonstrate to those voters, those workers on the ground there what this white house, this administration is doing on their behalf and acknowledge that there's more work to be done. he laid out key headlines from today. the white house is embracing more than 428,000 jobs, just last month. the unemployment rate at 3.6%. that's down from 6.4% when the president took office. this is the fastest decline in unemployment we have seen. the president does recognize there are kitchen table challenges, like inflation, higher prices for things like gas, up more than $1.30 over the last year. today, part of his remarks is focused on technology called additive manufacturing

. >>> first, joining me peter alexander, former u.s. attorney and law professor barbara mcquid and susan page and dr. patel. welcome to you. thank you for joining us. peter, let me start with you. just kind of put it simply here. realistically, what options does the white house have? >> reporter: the options certainly are limited right now. obviously without the votes in congress, as you note, there's nothing that senate democrats will be able to do. they don't have the votes to end the filibuster. they don't have votes to guarantee abortion rights nationwide. the white house is right now working on, without indicating exactly what they will do, as we heard from the president. the president has tasked the gender policy council to try to look at options in case this leaked draft opinion is finalized right now. the president saying that we will be ready. we heard from jen psaki and others that they emphasize this. some advocates for abortion rights have been pushing for a public health emergency to be declared by the president that would

he also said to peter alexander who asked him about these tariffs that the u.s. slapped on chinese goods, if the president was going to lift those. that's one thing some experts say could benefit the economy. the president there saying that that is something under consideration. >> also sort of sending it over also to the senate, the fact the senate failed to confirm several of his federal reserve nominees. it's the fed that has the tools -- some tools to deal with inflation. i want to go to jo ling kent. gas hitting historic highs. electric bills rising. saying nothing of childcare costs. these are the fundamental problems, kitchen table problems the president is trying to get his arms around because of the headwinds from inflation. >> yeah. when you think about what the average consumer is thinking about right now, it's probably what president biden said at the very end, the idea is that he doesn't have a crystal ball when it's going to end. let's be exact. if you look at the data, inflation has been above 5% since last may. it has been a year. we are at 8.5%.
