on the republican side. we're seeing a return to culture wars in georgia that we really haven't seen in a long time, you know, one of the first things that governor kemp did when he took office was sign of sweeping anti-abortion law. and that was something that his predecessors tried to avoid and he's expected to soon sign a very broad ranging gun rights expansion into law both aimed at energizing republican voters, but we're all seeing a return to sort of culture wars the classroom. we're seeing legislation that seeks to direct how teachers can talk about race and gender in the classrooms. what what republican sponsors called divisive concepts we're seeing legislation that gives school officials more power to ban what they see as offensive books obscene books restrictions on transgender athletes from from competing in certain high school sports. so we're seeing a broad range of those issues come up in the georgia legislature that governor kemp will put front and center in his election campaign as a reason f

where do you expect this to become more problematic for the republicans? does it surprise you at how nervous they are acting right now? >> chuck, just go back to the 2020 exit poll. 28% of trump voters supported legal abortion in all or most cases, and that's a significant chuck of the trump base. this has the potential to drive a wage into that base particularly in the midwestern states where a percentage of that was higher. in 2016, he downplayed social issues like abortion and gay marriage and places where he had a lot in common with the white class working voters, including women. on top of that, consider the energy level on college campuses before this decision leaks was pretty much dead, and now it has the potential to very much come alive particularly for state races. we have 36 governorships on the ballot, and i think the re-election stock for people like michigan state university's district, and marcy captor in toledo has gone up. >> one of the things i wonder here is this essentially an equalizer when it comes to base energizing? that the democra

republicans. and they are showing the public that they are giving these members and others invited by subpoenas, the opportunity to come in and explain what happened, to give their side of the story in a truthful way and if they don't, then the committee, once it does begin its presentation, that presentation is going to be even more powerful. because they are going to say that this is the evidence that we have. we invited these members to come in and discuss it. they refused to do so. that will probably make their case more compelling. i want to add, this committee has conducted itself with professionalism. they have conducted a comprehensive interview. they have been fair. i think it's important for the public of this process to reflect that. i think the truth is so powerful in this case that we don't need the drama and some of the flowery language that we tend to see in these public hearings. they should really continue conducting themselves with the surprise to you that the country needs in or

sandra: you heard a moment ago republican senator of texas and some other republican members of congress had spoken out as well. they are suggesting that perhaps there could be some common ground found here on gun legislation in the wake of this most recent shooting. would you support any changes, sir, to the current gun laws on the books? >> let's, for emphasis, understand the second amendment is about by the second amendment is designed to help ensure that we, the citizens always have the right to take back our government should become dictatorial but that's a great fear of the founding fathers and quite frankly it is a fear today. and as long as we enjoy on infringes second amendment rights then we don't really have to worry that much about the government ever becoming dictatorial. but the moment we take from our citizenry our ability to take our government back is the moment the ability of dictatorial forces increases to the point were perhaps they will try to implement a dictatorial government at the federal level. so i went to protect the second moment right to bear arms the member

five years ago senator mitch mcconnell, republican leader and the republican party in the senate ended the filibuster for supreme court nominees in order to do what they could not do legislatively, which is to make abortion legal. they didn't have the votes to do that. so, in order to get supreme court justices nominated, they ended the filibuster. candidate donald trump promised that he would only nominate supreme court justices who supported overturning roe vs wade. and unfortunately, out of the many lies, endless number of lies trump made during his campaign and presidency, it turns out that this is the one promise that he kept, the one honest statement that he made. further, while it looks like in this rare instance trump kept his promise, the republican supreme court justices during their senate confirmation hearings did not. in fact, justice alito and the three justices nominated by president trump all called roe vs wade an important precedent during their confirmation hearings. let me quote justice alito at senate confirmation january 11th, 2006. quote, justice alito. roe vs wad
