what is the rnc saying to that? >> reporter: look, the rnc is clearly going to appeal this. the judge sort of baked that into his decision. but what he did in his ruling is knocked down several of the arguments that the rnc was trying to use, saying that the request from the committee, they were arguing it was too broad, it wasn't a legitimate committee. the judge said that it was a narrowly tailored request and it made sense for it to move forward and for them to get that data. because to remind you what we are talking about here, they are talking about fund-raising data from the republican national committee that bolstered the idea that trump and his allies were pushing, that speak to -- if that fomented the january 6 riots that turned riot here. so multiple prongs to this investigation. >> so pete, this is one case, with one judge. but this judge really, you know, kind of knocked out the legs from some of the republican arguments we have been hearing in a lot of these cases can, huh? >> pretty much anybody who has gotten a subpoena from the committee has run to court and

what are the rnc's potential ties to the insurrection? >> what's the select committee in particular is interested in, in regards to the rnc, is its digital operation and its fund raising operations. so specifically, the people that they're talking to have knowledge about the way that the rnc raised money by sending out fundraising claiming falsely, spreading the lie, that their election has been stolen from president donald trump. now, former president donald trump. we know that the select committee is really interested in the way that that light percolated, the way it spread, the way it urged people. and the fact that they're really drilling down within the rnc shows that they're not just looking at people who are in trump's immediate orbit, but they're also looking at the republican party as an institution, as the way that the republican party in its most formal capacity, literally, cashed in on lies about the outcome of the 2020 election. and the fact that even able to speak to so many rnc staffers with such detailed knowledge about th

today the rnc is now getting involved in a lawsuit that's been filed by dane mccormick. here's the back story. he sued monday, asking counties to count mail-in ballots that don't have a date but that arrived on time. the chairman of the rnc says that sets a terrible precedent. dasha byrd is on the ground for us. tell us a bit more about mccormick's lawsuit, where the republican party stands on all of this, et cetera. >> reporter: if you have anything to do with pennsylvania politics, year head is probably spinning. we have two issues down. the recount on the one hand and the court battle on the other end. by the end of today, the county will submit the unofficials results to the secretary of state. that begins the triggering of the automatic recount. by thursday, she needs to order that recount, right? on the other hand, we have the court battle that is brewing. the mccormick lawsuit actually has to do with a court rules that came out on friday that doesn't on its face have anything to do with this election. it's actually related to a race back in november 2021, the cour

all of those things are important because they knocked down some of the arguments the rnc was trying to make here. in the data, what is important is the committee wants to look in a narrow way the rnc was disseminating the fundraising information because of the way the e-mails sought to stoke the big lie. we know the way the committee is looking into the way trump and his allies sought to foment that big lie. this is all about how the big lie was spread and how it lent to the balance of the capitol that day, so a big win for the committee here. >> and on meet the press on sunday, "new york times" reporters, the co-authors of the new book "this will not pass" had an interesting story about what they saw lindsay graham do and say in the middle of the attack. let me point out, they were there, they were taken out with the senators and they were there and this is an eyewitness account and not as told to my a third party. there's no question about the credibility of what they heard. let's watch. >> lindsay graham is extremely angry, he's almost shouting down the capitol police as they try

. >>> overnight a federal judge rejecting the rnc's effort to block its email marketing vendor sales frorce from releasing records to the committee investigating the capital insurrection. they want to understand the flow of emails from the rnc that said the 2020 election was stolen in the weeks before the capital attack. judge timothy kelly of the d.c. district court to us tossed out the claims that the panel wasn't properly comprised or appropriately seeking information, however, the panel will not obtain the marketing information immediately. kelly is temporarily blocking the data from being turned over until at least may 5th so the rnc has a chance to appeal. judge kelly notes the data won't reveal any major secrets of the internal workings. >>> a special grand jury will be seated today in fulton county, georgia, as part of an investigation into whether president trump and others illegally tried to pressure georgia officials to overturn the 2020 election results in that state. cnn's sara murray has been covering this story from the beginning. it's been like a year and a half since

it has backed off its urgent push for internal rnc documents. the panel hoped the records would show how the rnc's message ing and fund-raising may have contributed to the insurrectionists. it turns out the documents would not reach the panel in time for the hearing. house minority leader kevin mccarthy made it clear he would likely defy an order from the r daniels and katie benner. good to see you. the average american says if i get a subpoena, can i just decide not to answer it. tell us what's going on with the republicans here. >> what you hear from mccarthy is a resistance to complying with the subpoena not wanting to sit for questioning from this committee. so he had his lawyer send a letter a couple days ago outlining what they put forward a as a legal argument for why he did not have to comply with the subpoena. a leadership of the committee argues that those arguments have been debunked. judges have ruled against similar arguments by other witness who is tried to defy subpoenas. so this may ultimately just buy mccarthy some time and he m

senator rand paul, you might remember, and his wife were nearly trampled by far left protesters after the rnc convention. left-wing rioters also showed up at senator mitch mcconnell's home, confronted him and his wife. they also harassed of the pair at a local diner. you remember that moment. they also terrorized senator josh hawley's wife and their newborn baby at their front door. they confronted ted cruz and his wife at a restaurant. they also harassed trump's dhs secretary at a restaurant, we played that tape before, because they did not like trump's border wall. in 2018 they stormed the steps of the u.s. supreme court. they pounded on the front door in order to disrupt kavanaugh's nomination and more recently they followed senator kyrsten sinema into a bathroom and filled her going into a stall because she would not kill the filibuster. now they later also took their kayaks out and they went over to joe manchin's house boat because he wouldn't support build back broke america. and while this far left brand of political intimidation rarely works, democrats, they just can't seem to help th

rnc chairwoman is ronna mcdaniel with me in studio. good morning. general sense what was your takeaway from last night? >> really high turnout and double absentee turnout in 2018. it isn't apples to apples. democrats didn't have a race in the senate on the gubernatorial side. you look at republican turnout. it was through the roof for primary. >> bill: some states get more attention because there is more -- there are more races, some have higher priorities, some candidates are challenged, some are not. nonetheless in georgia you know how much attention has gone to the new voting law. in 2022 republicans were at 1.1 million. democrats at 700,000. when compared to the mid-term four years ago republicans up 96%, democrats up 29. your witness. >> exactly. and higher african-american turnout, asian turnout and hispanic turnout. as joe biden went down and called these laws racist. the exact opposite has been proven true through the results and much higher turnout across the board in georgia. >> bill: in georgia specifically. donald trump weighed in on a l

the rnc national convention also siding with oz on this. and the secretary of state has issued guidance just this morning telling counties to stet those ballot ace side, segregate them for now until we have some sort of result from the legal battle. counties could still have their own votes and make their own decision on how to deal with this. voters trying to make sense of what's going on are probably losing their minds just like i am right now. >> you did a terrific job. it sounds like this. without the extra ballots, mccormick probably comes up short. is that the bottom line? >> reporter: the bottom line is any recount that has happened in the history of pennsylvania, there's been six automatic recounts. three of them have been declined by the losing candidate, which by the way, mccormick could do if trailing. those three that have happened, none of them have changed the results. if this comes down to maybe 200 ballots or so difference, maybe we could see a recount and have an impact here. if it's closer to 1,000 and all likelihood from

this view that not all republican senators support it but we know that ronna mcdaniel, heads up the rnc, does like it. so do you know any of your colleagues that do? >> i think everybody who is running for re-election this year, neil, is going to come up with their message for their constituents, that resonates with the people that will vote in their states. any time you have somebody propose kind of a global plan, it's a different solution in different parts of the country. what i see happening is not people embracing any particular plan put out by somebody else but developing a campaign message built around the issues that speak to the things that people in their individual states care about. that's what i'm doing -- >> neil: but he's not any other senator. he's been raising money for republican senate candidates and he has this position is that is at odds with you, mitch mcconnell and the powers in the republican party. so is he giving ammunition to joe biden when he claims, the president, that republicans embrace raising taxes on half the population? >> again, i don't think that the

oz, you would not be surprised to hear, and with the support of rona mcdaniel from the rnc says, no, if they're lacking a date on the ballot, it shouldn't be cast. it shouldn't be counted. i should point this out. we are talking about ballots that came in by election day. so, this is not an issue of were they received on time. there's a state law requirement that says you've got to write down the date that you actually filled out your ballot. a federal court decision last friday from the third circuit in an unrelated case said even if you lack a date, it ought to be counted. so, mccormick is pointing to that decision and saying that ought to be the standard. >> so, essentially because of course the former president donald trump was really saying, look, declare that you're the victor, oz, before anything of this happens. sort of an eye towards thinking, if votes are coming in, they may chop away at the margin you have. is there any way you see this avoiding a recount at this point? and by the way, if this does go to a recount -- which we think it's going to go to a recount -- are ther

joining me to discuss is former rnc spokesperson, -- also with us, former republican congressman, david jolly, and i msnbc political analysts. kevin, let's start with you. this strategy makes sense for the lead, but how will republicans respond if roe it is overturned. should the supreme court do that in june? >> initially, republicans will have to talk smartly about this issue. they have not had a lot of practice in the last several decades because they have the talking point of saying if they are in a tough race, and then state their opposition to row. now in a post roe world, they will have to look at where their states are going to do in their legislators, we're all the action will be, for money will flow. those will be very competitive and expensive, suddenly. republican senate candidates, especially, will have to be very smart about how they talk about it. the talking points from the nra c are not that. whether or not our candidates can stick to it, which they have not been able to do, is a different story, we will see. >> you raise the point that it just takes one state lawmaker

also with us, victoria soto-dean and michael steele, former change of the rnc. garrett, let me start with you. we are seeing abortion be a top issue for voters. how is this impacting candidates in the primaries? >> reporter: beto is trying to raise this against the governor. it's playing out in the primaries in texas as well, specifically in a runoff southwest where i am right now in texas' 28th district where you have a self-described pro-life democratic congressman. he represented that district since 2005. he is the only congressional democrat to vote against the women's health protection act when that was on the floor last year. he is challenged by jessica cisneros who says he is out of touch. he is getting hammered by progressives. he told me they just don't get this district. here is what he had to say. >> the problem is that they in their own minds have an idea what a, quote, democrat should be. they want us to vote with the democratic party 100% of the time. i don't do that. i have an 86% voting report with the democrats. it's important we represent the c

he is the new face in ohio of the republican party, which brings us to someone who used to run the rnc, who supported joe biden the last election, michael steel. welcome back. i have to remind people, that's not just an activist or something. that's the nominee. >> yeah, no, it is where the party is right now. and there are a whole bunch of those who were endorsed by trump in ohio alone, let alone what we're going to see roll out over the course of the spring and summer into august in these primaries. which is why mitch mcconnell and a number of leaders in washington are very worried about what was once a really well paved yellow brick road to winning in november. now pockmarked by candidates like this and certainly now the supreme court narrative, which will transform the playing field even further, because folks need to keep in mind, what republicans have also looking over their shoulders is not just abortion but affirmative action rulings by the supreme court along with a few others. so in term of having that space carved out to run right through november, candidates like the one yo
