s sam kiley. >> sam kiley, thank you so much. with me now to discuss, jennifer, who studied war and this conflict very carefully. good to have you back. >> thanks for having me. >> you see there, the enormous losses of the russian military in what was a key front in their attack. trying to cross the river to get across and try to surround ukrainian forces in the east. they already had to retrieve from kyiv. now they're retreating from kharkiv. ukraine's second largest city and now at least stalling in the east and i wonder, when you look at the whole picture, does that show you the russian military is losing in ukraine? >> i do think the russian military is losing and i think you framed it right. there were four initial axes of advance and main effort was significant and now in eastern ukraine, the russians attempting to set a new main effort and encircle ukrainian forces in the donbas and take the entirety of the donetsk and luhansk, and even that now, the second attempt is stalling and revising down their objectives once again.

and sam kiley hinted at that. this is truly heartbreaking and just the latest brutality at the hnds of russian forces. that 90 people were sheltering in the basement of this school, almost the entire village, by the way, was inside when russian forces dropped a bomb on the school. officials tell us that 60 people are most likely dead and 30, according to the governor, have been rescued from the rubble. but this area is in lulujansk. well, not far away from the village and in this backdrop of brutality that we have seen yet another example of defiance, courage under fire. this is the face of bravery. meet 15-year-old anastasia. a courageous and defiant teenager, now recovering from her injuries in lviv. what about your legs, the nurse asks her. they came under fire, she replies. as her hometown was pummeled by russian artillery, she wanted to help two wounded men get to a hospital. the help was urgently needed so as not to lose a lot of blood sheerks says, so she picked up the car keys. and i had to get behind the

cnn's sam kiley surveyed the damage. >> reporter: the scale of the blast is quite extraordinary, and so is, frankly, the effort being made to clean up already. i mean, it's just a few hours ago that these impacts were felt, ripping through these residential buildings, and i have been on the other side of these buildings. they look the same on this side next to the blast as they do on the other side. the blast simply rushed clean through these buildings, tearing them to pieces. mercifully, there were 25 people have been wounded across the city in 3 different locations. there was also a blast quite close to the administrative headquarters. there's only been six people hospitalized and one person is critical. that's in stark contrast to the last time kramatorsk was hit in earnest about a month ago when the railway station was struck by a surface-to-surface missile, a long-range missile, probably similar to the one that landed here. that killed at least 50 people waiting to try to evacuate from this city. as a consequence, though, of the evacuations, the toll in terms of wounded and dead

kiley joins you should from kyiv tonight. what is their assessment on the state of the war? >> reporter: they're very guarded, really, about what they reveal in any kind of detail about the extent of the war, but i think that essentially, they recognize and indeed president zelenskyy has reinforced this in the last 24 hours or so, saying that the war in the east is taking a heavy toll. 50 to 100 people being killed everyday, that's combat people on the ukrainian side, according to the president, i think that is an estimate that the foreign fighters that i've spoken to been involved in those combat operations there in the south too would endorse. they are saying the ukrainians are getting hit and hit hard, but they're also saying that the material difference that the nato equipment that is coming in, the more sophisticated equipment than the russians have deployed is going to, is having a material effect, a positive one from the ukrainian perspective. >> sources tell cnn the biden administration is considering a proposal to se

cnn's sam kiley explains. >> reporter: this tank has come from intense fighting over the last few days. 60 civilians were killed there in an air strike, hiding in the basement of an abandoned school, and the ukrainians are claiming that they've killed a really large number, possibly many hundreds of russian troops who were part of an attempt to cross the donetsk river using a pontoon bridge system. the ukrainians have released satellite images that show a scene of complete devastation of that russian crossing. they say that they have knocked out a number of russian tanks, armored personnel carrier, other multirocket launching systems, but it hasn't been without cost. the ukrainians have also clearly lost soldiers. they've had a number of injured, and we've seen some of them earlier on in the week. we've also just seen a grad multiple rocket launching system drive past with clearly the signs of shrapnel damage and explosive damage that has been done to it. almost as quickly, though, reinforcements are being rushed into this very important front because this is very strongly about trying

sam kiley has more in this report. >> reporter: this is the former headquarters of the secret police of ukraine. it was hit right at the beginning of the war with an air strike clearly from the russian perspective, this is an immediate necessity to knock out t their capacity because it is from this location that the counterintelligence operation would have been run. >> translator: we've been working on him for about four days. we have a complete picture of his actions he says. this is ukraine's more secretive force, the equivalent of the fbi and then some. he says we have identified a person who according to our intelligence is committing a crime. simply put, this is a person who transmits to the russian side. the russian military, information about the locations of our units. their snatch team with orders to grab an alleged russian spy. the sbu says that spies feed a stream of information on troop movements and details of targets to russia's aircraft and artillery. in this region, the sbu says it captures one or two agents run by russia every day. and today's suspect is being watche

sam kiley, cnn, eastern ukraine. >>> well, to washington now. said rick layton. colonel, good to see you. so if the ukrainians have in fact taken this real estate on kharkiv, it puts them within striking distance of russia's lines. >> well, it could be that. i think that they may not have all the thing that they need in order to mount a counteroffensive like that, but if they can, i think they would certainly be well-advised to do something like this, especially given the fact the russians have had some difficulty getting their supply lines situated properly. and that's -- this i think would be a good time for them to to that actually. >> well, the u.s. director of national intelligence had this outlook for the next month. here she is. >> the next month or two of fighting will be significant as the russians attempt to reinvigorate their efforts. but even if they are successful, we are not confident that the fight in the donbass will effectively end the war. >> so looking at a period of time when this could escalate significantly. would you expect them to continue

joining us from kramatorsk is sam kiley. sam, a lot of heavy fighting concentrated in the eastern region of ukraine. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, anderson, this is the strategic prize for the russian campaign, which putin reiterated in terms of his references there in moscow to the donbas and his desire to capture the donbas, that is a large chunk of eastern ukraine, including the city of kramatorsk, where i'm standing right now. on the eve of effectively the victory day parade, those 60 civilians were killed in an air strike on a village not very far from here, well about an hour's drive away, as part of the ongoing campaign being conducted by the russians to try to push in that area south towards the city here and also they're pushing in from the east, trying to close up the areas of territory that they've got so that they can have a contiguous extra bit of land that may be ultimately what putin would have to be satisfied with were he to be victorious. but that, of course, remains in very serious doubt at the mome

we have reporters in ukraine tonight, i want to start with sam kiley, live in kramatorsk ukraine, what is the latest tonight? >> reporter: i think in the last 48 hours or more, perhaps, there's been intensification, erin, of the fighting here as the russians continue to try to punch through the ukrainian defensive lines, just as you were talking to me there, i heard the distant thump of some kind of artillery, going around, difficult to tell, but a completely normal aspect of life here at the moment and more normal, more horrific but normal is what's been happening in donetsk where apartment buildings and hospital have been recently bombed or attacked with artillery and rockets. and at the same time, over the last 48 hours, have been this concerned thrust coming in from the east, due east, the territory, since 2014, held by russian-backed rebels. they've been trying to push through, hitting very hard against the town of bacmut, now that is a very important regional administrative center, it is as a military, very busy there, obviously civilian administration there, there are important

cnn's sam kiley got to see the aftermath and joined us live from kramatorsk this morning. sam? >> reporter: john, this remains an active front line area, essentially the front line now is, again, the donetsk river, but it was this russian attempt to punch through which was such a disaster, a battlefield disaster for the russians. they have been trying to punch through at various locations along this very long front line that extends all the way to kharkiv in order to capture the city where i am here in kramatorsk. but this was the aftermath of the latest battle and the russian disaster. the first signs of a russian disaster, a russian tank being salvaged by ukrainian troops. a few days ago this was the scene on the edge of these woods, russian pontoon bridges under ferocious ukrainian artillery attack. the ukrainian commander with us cast an eye to the sky looking for russian drones. this is no place for complacency. ukraine and nato have claimed that russia suffered badly here. they estimate 70 to 80 vehicles destroyed and a whole russian battle ground of 1,000 men mauled. so

cnn's sam kiley is nearby in eastern ukraine. ukrainian counter offensive appears to be getting closer to the russian border. >> reporter: well, victor, i think that a counter offensive in one area is matched by an offensive by the russians in another. where i am in kramatorsk, relatively close to here, about 20 kilometers, 25 kilometers north of here, there's a ferocious fight going on. this is a back and forward fight in the east, and mostly involving the use of long range and relatively long range artillery. it's a vicious and bloody fight, one that rarely sees the infantry engagement in and around kharkiv. there have been ukrainian successes there, possibly because the russians are focusing their attention on trying to push to this city where i am in kramatorsk and also of course they're also concentrating their efforts more to the east. today suffering some catastrophic levels of civilian casualties. we're not exactly sure of the numbers but across the region, local authorities say 21 civilians have been killed, victor, so i

for more on that, we go now to cnn's sam kiley in kramatorsk there in the east. sam, what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, victor and al alisyn, as you rightly point out, bridges have been destroyed as part of the russian retreat. that means that they have no intention at all of returning to that front line. they have given up their attempts to capture that city, one of the key parts of that original invasion as ordered by vladimir putin on february 24th, some time ago now. but a very different picture here for essentially part of the same front line where the russians really are focused on trying to capture the city i'm in right now, kra ma -- kramatorsk, they own or control specific chunks but not kramatorsk, and they have been trying to push across the donetsk river and established a pontoon bridge killing a large number of russian soldiers and destroying a lot of armor. relatively near to that location today, there was a lot of shelling in both directions. essentially the front lines in this part of the battle space are largely frozen. with any concentratio

sam kiley surveyed the damage to that area earlier today. >> reporter: extraordinary, and so is frankly the effort being made to clean up already. it is just a few hours ago that these impacts were felt, ripping through these residential buildings. and i've been on the other side of these buildings, they look the same on this side, next to the blast as they do on the other side, the blast hit through the buildings, tearing them to pieces, mercifully 25 people have been wounded across the city and in three different locations. there was also a blast close to the administrative headquarters. there only has been six people hospitalized and one person is critical. that's in stark contrast to the last time kramatorsk was hit in earnest a month ago when the railway station was struck by a surface to surface missile, probably similar to the one that landed here. that killed at least 50 people waiting to try to evacuate from the city. the consequence, though, of the evacuations, the toll in terms of wounded and dead from these frankly atrocities, this is a deliberate targeting, with not dumb bo

now, we have reporters across ukraine this evening, i want to start with sam kiley "outfront" live in kramatorsk. what is the latest on the ground now? >> reporter: well if we take mariupol, that extraordinary fight still going on with 700 fighters from the ukrainian side holding out against the odds, most, if not all civilians have been evacuated from mariupol but they continue to be pounded. they even claimed the ukrainian sides have launched a minor counterattack to try to drive the russian forces back from the perimeter of that steel plant. that's been a very important draw away of troops to be focused that could have been focused where i am on the kramatorsk which really is the strategic prize in the campaign now of the russians now that they have gone from effectively wanting to commit regime change to capturing the donbas. this is the biggest city remaining in ukrainian hands in the donbas region and the regions of luhansk and donetsk and as you're rightly pointing out there in the introduction, there's been a significant battle over the pontoon bridge over the last couple days

as sam kiley reports for us now, as many as 60 civilians may have been killed after a russian missile flattened a school over the weekend in luhansk where civilians were sheltering. >> one man's parade for the many. the many on parade for one man. and on the eve of victory day, authorities here say 60 people died in a russian air strike. the victory over german naziism once united the people of russia and ukraine. not anymore. this is what putin's modern campaign to denaziify ukraine looked like on the eve of that victory day in the east of the country. from mariupol to mykolaiv, kherson to kramatorsk, russians saving russian speaking people in ukraine is violent in the east, where most people speak russian. in victory day, ukrainians held muted memorials to a past war while the war rages on. this man's response to putin's parade. >> sarcastic, let them celebrate. we would celebrate, too. imagine what they bombed. an ordinary village with only pensioners and children. they died in a russian thrust
