guest: the fact that straight off the plane he goes to the semiconductor manufacturing company samsung is a tremendous symbolism of the united states being committed to working with partners, wanting to get korean commitment to ensure there is stability in the chip sector. we have had a lot of disruptions doing covid. we are going to need more chips. it is a technology that will only increase in need as we become more integrated, digitally, and the united states is not making them enough. by going there i think that that has shed light on the need for economic security. i will also be looking at some of the other visits he will be making. yes, the bilateral meetings he has with the new korean president, to be sure, a face-to-face meeting with the japanese prime minister. but the big thing will be two things. one is the quadrilateral summit meeting between not just japan and the united states, but also india and a new australian prime minister who will be elected on sunday. in the launch of a u.s. economic vision called the indo pacific economic framework. host: you mentioned the new so

and so when you see the president arrive, first thing that he will do is go to this samsung factory that is manufacturing semiconductors, those critical microchips that are essential for vehicles. there has been a global shortage of those because of shutdowns at chinese factories. and what the president wants to do is reiterate that the u.s. can sort of wean itself off of its reliance on chinese supply chains, get those microchips from other allies like south korea and potentially make them back at home. so this is sort of the economic message that the president hopes to drive while he is in asia. but certainly security issues will all be the focus of the bilateral talks that the president will hold with the new south korean president tomorrow and then tomorrow the new prime minister in japan as well. these are new leaders, the u.s. has taken them as sort of a positive sign, both have been very vocally pro united states. and so the president's aides certainly feel confident that they can get a lot out of this trip. but when we see them touchdown in a few minutes, we'll see that demonstra

it's a samsung facility in south korea. and you look around, it supports over 10,000 workers, an amazing manufacturing operation. we should build something like that in america. and if congress doesn't pass the chips act and pass it quickly, we're going to lose out on that. you know, intel, micron, samsung, they're all -- they're growing. you know they're growing they're going to build future facilities if congress doesn't move quickly, they're not going to build them in america. they're going to continue to build them in asia and europe and we risk losing out on that you mention national security, america buys 70% of its most sophisticated chips from taiwan. those are the chips in military equipment. that's like 250 chips in a javelin launching system you want to buy all that from ta taiwan that's not secure. pass the bill, congress, pass chips and get to the business of making those chips in the united states of america to secure our future. >> which raises the question of what would happen to the semiconductor industry a
