steve kornacki. steve, what is the latest? >> you get a bit of an upset right there in northern carolina, all eyes are on this pennsylvania republican senate primary. we told you that john fetterman will be the democratic nominee. who is his opponent gonna be? and we are calling this now. too close to call. not a shock to see that designation, david mccormack's leading doctor mehmet oz right now. the margin between them now sits under 7000 votes here. you see less than 1% is split between them. kathy barnett, a lot of talk about her in the final stages of this campaign. with a lot of late momentum. but she is lacking a bit behind them. i think a couple ways to look at this, the key though, in big picture. is this. and this republican primary, there are some votes that were cast by mail. but republicans if you remember in the 2020 election in, this was a story. republicans are far less likely to cast a mail ballots then democrats are. so probably about 10% of the votes in this republican primary are g

joining us now is the great steve kornacki. steve, it is good to see you, my friend. you have big news out of ohio right now, those numbers are coming in fast and furious. >> yeah, ali. there it is, you see the check mark jd vance we're declaring has won the republican primary. he will face off against tim ryan the democrat in the fall. basically what's been happening here, if you've been watching these returns on our air tonight when we first came on the air when about the first ten or 15% of the vote was reported out, vance was running at about 24, 25%. what that was was the way they report the vote out in ohio is every county puts out the early vote and the vote by mail first. in a republican primary, that's a pretty small share of the overall vote. most republicans, most prefer to vote in person on election day. the people that voted in person on election day today have broken sharply for jd vance in county after county we have seen him measurably improving in how he did today versus how he did in the early vote. a couple things could explain that but one of them

steve kornacki, at the big board. all right steve, here we are, it is your night. what do we need to know most at this moment? >> while stephanie, it is just the suspense in this pennsylvania republican senate primary. you mentioned john fetterman is going to win the democratic nomination. who is going to oppose him? look at this mehmet oz, has been running in second place most of the night. but we have been watching that gap against david mccormack get smaller and smaller. it's down to 3000 votes essentially right now. three tenths of one point separating oz from mccormack. kathy barnett a little bit further back. a couple of things to look at that, it just fell inside of 2000 votes now. the margin of mccormack over us. a couple of things that are happening here. we were saying for the last hour or so, the philadelphia suburbs. which are going to account for about a quarter of all the votes in this primary, we are very slow to report out there election day votes. the folks who went out to report vote in person. we are now starting to get to election day vote. a lo

we are joined by steve kornacki working the big board. i want to start where we always start at times like this with a lot of open questions. >> this is the big open question. who is going to be the republican nominee for the u.s. senate in pennsylvania. who is going to take on john fetterman. you can see mehmet oz leading right now. that margin over david mccormick for him is just over 1,500 votes. basically from this morning until now that margin has been cut in a third basically. it was about 2,400 this morning. now it's down to 1,500. so mccormick has gotten a little closer. but he still has a ways to go. there aren't a ton of votes left. what we can tell you about in terms of where there are votes left in pennsylvania, number one is allegheny county. pittsburgh area, they say the votes that are left here were probably not going to get those reported out until monday. until after the weekend. there have been some technical issues with the equipment and the machinery, the memory cards they used there. one thing we're getting indication

i have to confess i have not been following the election results as closely as you and steve kornacki, and steve can take a break for the first segment of this hour while we talk about other things. but what are you seeing developing, if there is anything resembling a pattern in result so far tonight? >> i don't see a huge pattern. re

nbc news national political correspondent steve kornacki as at the big board with the latest, steve. >> so chris like a look here at the republican primary. we see j.d. vance get about 60% of the vote in is leading early on. josh mandel. and then matt dolan, states under here, the one candidate and notably who donald trump has condemned and says does not want dolan winning this nomination. i think there's two dynamics that are coming into focus here right now. number one is that dole and core areas of strength or going to be the metropolitan area. so for instance, he's from cuyahoga county this or cleveland's, his family owns the cleveland guardians baseball team. we are seeing is basically the early vote. this is the via male, this is the early in-person vote. you already see dolan leading up with this vote. you've got a lot of votes still to come in. in cuyahoga county. he's going to do very well it looks like in places, give you another example. the state capital, franklin county, columbus, you're looking at the early vote already doled is cleaning up a lot to come. we have no vot

it's primary election night, let's go back to our own steve kornacki at the big board. steve, what do you know? >> we keep seeing david mccormick clinging to a lead over mehmet oz, the margin here two tenths of 1%, it is 2148 votes separating them. just watching these returns coming in the last few minutes, oz got a big batch of votes out of york county, that had brought him significantly closer to mccormack, mccormack then countered in western pennsylvania, in erie county. mccormick got a good batch of votes out of, here just a second ago if you came in from the city of philadelphia, that tighten things a little bit. but that's what we're watching right now. a few thousand votes here, a few there. oz can get close we've seen him get close to 2000, we've let you have to see him get close to mccormick, there's two things to keep an eye on, here number one is the margin between these two candidates. it's two tenths of one point, pennsylvania law calls for recount if the final margin is less than or equal to five tenths of one point. right now, you've been recount territor

kornacki has been digging into the latest polling data steve? >> all right, shep when you ask about roe v. wade itself and whether that decision by the supreme court ought to be overturned, this is what you find in polling. very consistently you find strong opposition. nearly 60% opposed to overturning roe, only 32% say they support overturning roe and yet public attitudes on the subject of abortion are a little bit more complicated than these numbers might make you think let's take a look at it this way. here's some associated press polling from within the last year they asked folks in general, do you think that abortion should be legal in most or all cases or illegal in most or all cases here's what they founding. majority, 56%, saying it should be legal in most or all cases, 43% saying illegal but then break it down by trimester and here you see some pretty big disparities let's start with the first trimester, more than 60% believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases during the first three months of a pregnancy. move it along to the

steve kornacki, thank you very much. let's bring in dasha burns, outside of philly, bryn mawr county. dasha, i thought the number of voters you that spoke to didn't like dr. oz, but were pulled over in the last minute because of the endorsement of donald trump? >> reporter: yeah, katy, look, there's a reason why everyone is watching the state, right? first it could decide the balance of power in the senate. but it's a microcosm of the conversation we're having nationally about where the republican party is headed about trump's influence. i've said it before, i'll say it again this is perhaps trump's biggest test yet. you can look at what's happening in two different ways, right? on the one hand, two-thirds of american primary voters did vote for a candidate that trump did not endorse. mccormick and barnette. but for months, i've been talking to you about this, i've been hearing this resistance from voters, mostly undecided voters who said to me this guy from out of state, he's a talk show host. i don't know why he's runn

joining me now, steve kornacki. steve, it's been a long night. it's going to be a long days, maybe longer. start us off in pennsylvania. where you see the remaining vote. >> pennsylvania elections, just like 2020, we are in overtime. >> exactly. >> oz leading mccormick for the u.s. senate. the margin, 2,463 votes. we are still waiting on some more votes out of allegheny county. that's mccormick's home county. he has been leading in that county. it may take a couple days to report out the remaining vote. there are several thousand votes. it's an opportunity for him. he wouldn't erase the lead just with the votes out of allegheny but he could cut into the gap he faces there. we are waiting on more votes out of delaware county. this right outside philadelphia. mccormick is leading. it's very close. oz is doing well here as well. there's a possibility that mccormick could make a little bit more in the way of inroads here. i wouldn't look for massive inroads out of delaware county either. a couple of places left here where there's precincts from elect

and nbc's steve kornacki joins us. vonn hilliard joins us. this was a night that the level of victory by vance was surprising by many? >> yeah, ends up being ten points for vance over mandel, and mandel also tried to land the trump endorsement. you look where vance was polling before trump got involved in the race a few weeks ago, and it's hard not to conclude trump probably did play a key role in pushing vance over the top and getting him the nomination. and if you look into the west virginia and pennsylvania border, these were some of the strongest counties in the state for donald trump when he ran for president. and some of the strongest counties for j.d. vance last night. if we look at the general, tim ryan will be the democratic nominee. he had no problem winning that primarily last night, and take a look at what ryan is up against. an 8-point win for trump, and since trump emerged on the scene ohio has changed and transformed politically, moved very dramatically in the republican direction. tim ryan's backyard, young's town, ohio, this

steve kornacki at the big board and charlie sykes and columnist connie schultz. steve, an important win for donald trump for the state of his political power. what are your biggest takeaways? >> that's the most important one. ohio posed the question going forward, if trump could get his candidate across the finish line in ohio, would that emmbold ben him. in terms of trump's impact on this primary, it's hard to ignore. a couple things, if you look at polling in the race through mid april, when trump made his endorsement of jd vance, you didn't have him at the top. he ended up moving to the top by about ten points. you take a look here, vance and mandel who ran the hardest after getting the trump endorsement after trump voters. the strongest trump areas, it was vance and mandel running one and two. vance running number one. look at that result and think, if trump weighed in for mandel, good chance he would be the nominee. it's clear trump had an impact. vance benefits. vance moves to the general election. a quick look at the general election here. the opponent is

steve kornacki live on the ground louisville. i heard it was raining. it doesn't look bad. how is the race shaping up? >> it doesn't look bad yet. it's getting grayer by the minute. the forecast still calling for a lot of rain this afternoon. of course, the big question is, how is that going to affect the track? is that going to change the nature of tomorrow's big race? there's drama, suspense heading into the kentucky derby. for the last year, the sport has been dogged around controversy controversy. baffert has been banned from the race. two horses until a few weeks ago were trained by baffert are going to be running in the race. they are trained by somebody else. both of them -- there's things on paper to like about them. neither is the favorite. each a big variable in tomorrow's race. the baffert-trained horses with someone else with a new trainer. could they dominate the race baffert has for the last decade? the two favorites are epicenter and zandon. there's another variable there. there's a mattress and furniture store magnate who is threatening to bet $3 million on

joining me now, steve kornacki and kristin welker. steve, first to you. last tuesday we had a wild night in pennsylvania. still to be decided. what should we expect in georgia when the polls close this evening? >> in georgia, the polls are pointing in one clear direction, in the governor's race, the average of all the polls shows brian kemp the incumbent more than 20 points ahead of david purdue, the trump-backed challenger. one of the keys is this is a runoff state. kemp's challenge is not just to get more votes, he wants to finish this off tonight, get more than 50%, win this thing outright. the polls suggest that kemp has a very good opportunity to do that tonight. obviously, that's the marquis race in georgia. i went past it. you mentioned walker, widely expected as well to win the republican nomination officially for the united states senate tonight, would put him in a general election race against warnock. this is the race that will keep us awake the longest. this could be the most suspenseful. these are candidates who are not as well-known statewid

wade let's turn to steve kornacki who has been digging into the polling data surrounding abortion for the u.s. steve, opinions vary on the topic, depending on how the question is framed. as well as how far along the pregnancy is. take us through it. >> exactly. a lot of variables when the look at the public opinion aspect of this. let's take you through a few of them. when you ask it as a bottom line question specifically around the roe v. wade decision, asking should roe v. wade be overturned, this is the latest gallop poll number. this has been study the last few years. different pollsters asking this question. you generally get a result like this. wide opposition when you ask about overturning roe v. wade. in this poll, 32% support, 58% oppose. when you ask about roe v. wade, that's roughly the response you are going to get no matter who is polling it. when you start to break this down a little bit more, that's where you see variance. this was an ap poll that came out less than a year ago. take it in a different -- a couple different levels. when the question is asked, in general d
