the opponent is tim ryan. he wins the democratic primary easily. he has been in congress two decades. the challenge he is up against is simply that ohio has become a different state politically since donald trump emerged on the scene. this is a state that obama carried twice. trump by eight in 2020 and 2016. the part of the state where tim ryan is from is a crucial part of the story. look at where youngstown is. this is part of tim ryan's congressional district that he has represented for 20 years. trump carried that county by two points in 2020. if that doesn't seem impressive, consider that in 2012, when obama won the state of ohio, obama won the county by 28 points. you have seen a 30-point shift in the youngstown area. you have seen shifts comparable to that through the valley, southern ohio, the appalachian region of ohio. you have seen counties that obama won, was competitive in as recently as 2012 that donald trump now racked up margins of 30, 40 points or more in. that's been the transformation of ohio. that's been a little bit to offset it

congressman tim ryan won the democratic senate primary setting the field now for what will be one of the most closely watched senate races in november. joining me now to discuss, cnn political, senior political correspondent abby phillip the anchor of "inside politic sunday" and jeff selzeleny. the advance in polls after the endorsement of trump, does this answer the question finally of whether or not he still controls the party? >> it certainly did last night in ohio. no question about it. everyone was watching to see if he would be a king maker, the former president and in fact, he was. without that endorsement, there is no doubt in anyone's mind there, particularly jd vance's mind that he would have won the primary. and won it with some 32% of the vote, which is pretty impressive in a crowded field of seven candidates and five major candidates. there is no doubt that the endorsement about 2.5 weeks or so ago pushed vance over the top. but it doesn't necessarily answer the question entirely for the rest of the month of may. there are several primaries going forward beginning next w

tim ryan is the democratic candidate. we'll wait to see who it is officially on the republican side but as of right now sean, it's, what, 9:30, 9:35 at night, jd vance looks really good. one more thing. in our polling that we found in late april, we had 25% of the voters who we looked at, who we polled, were undecided. a month prior, in march in our poll, 24% of those that we polled were undecided. it appears to me sean that all the undecided voters went for vance and mandell and dolan because there's other candidate mike givens, jane, they're performing how we expect, ten and 6% this is where they have gone. so take a look at this, as i'm talking to you sean we're getting numbers from the associated press, i know you're cuing the music but i have a headline. this number for the associated press is calling the race right now for jd vance. so if it looks like if that holds up jd vance will be the republican nominee in november against tim ryan the democrat. now we have a situation here where trump has almost run the table.

i don't know that that has presented itself as the viable path for tim ryan. it is interesting to hear. so much you hear about the carpet bagger stuff and the democratic apparatus, as soon as the vance victory came in, john, was trying to frame vance as actually an elitist. this inauthentic, he was never trump and pro somehow he can't be believed. he's not the guy who identifies with what he wrote in the hillbilly-elegy. time ryan, he may have tried the carpet bagger thing. he talked about the economy every day, he understands the climate you are talking about. but this is a red state now. this is not the ohio of a couple of election cycles ago even. it was the mother of all battleground states. donald trump won it by 8 or 9 points and trended from purple to reasonable doubt. in this climate, that's a mountain for tim ryan. >> if we can show the map to come. the question is proof, that is trump-endorsed senate candidates. he's involved in governor's races as well. where you have contested primaries. by the end of may, pennsylvania, sean parnell had to drop out

he will face off against tim ryan the democrat in the fall. basically what's been happening here, if you've been watching these returns on our air tonight when we first came on the air when about the first ten or 15% of the vote was reported out, vance was running at about 24, 25%. what that was was the way they report the vote out in ohio is every county puts out the early vote and the vote by mail first. in a republican primary, that's a pretty small share of the overall vote. most republicans, most prefer to vote in person on election day. the people that voted in person on election day today have broken sharply for jd vance in county after county we have seen him measurably improving in how he did today versus how he did in the early vote. a couple things could explain that but one of them is that it was the middle of the early voting period on april 15th that donald trump threw his support behind jd vance. so could be one of the reasons vance is doing so much better today than he did in the early vote. also worth noting, josh mandel here

michael, could tim ryan be right? he might not get all 23% of that vote, but could he get votes from republicans who voted against vance? >> sure. he's gonna have to work it though. it doesn't translate one for one. from a prime -- from a republican primary, which largely has hard right, center right voters. he's gonna have to work in edge those voters closer to himself. it's gonna matter how he sounds on a lot of issues in this race. keep in mind, dolan had the benefit of a surge at the end there. again, what were those voters -- one of the composition of those voters? why didn't they swing toward mandel, or j. d. vance. if he can figure that little part of the formula out, i think he can pull a good portion of those voters to his side, and make that dash against j. d.. because j. d. is not the popular candidate in this race, he wasn't in the primary. except for that last-minute endorsement, mandel probably wouldn't beat them out. >> well, trump may have put him over the top, but he certainly didn't -- wouldn't call
