let's start with bill barr here. this is bill barr talking about the work he did to try to chase down some of these claims. >> the department, in fact, when we received specific and credible allegations of fraud made an effort to look into these to satisfy ourselves that they were without merit. and i was in the posture of trying to figure out -- there was an avalanche of all of these allegations of fraud that built up over a number of days, and it was like playing whac-a-mole, something would come out one day, and the next day it would be another issue. i was influenced by the fact that all of the early claims that i understood were completely bogus and silly, and usually based on complete misinformation, and so i didn't consider the quality of claims right out of the box to give me any, you know, feeling that there was really substance here. >> their effectiveness of the presentation. >> that's right. very effective because he's talking to somebody who was unquestionably a partisan of the president. it's something

bill barr didn't make any bones of who he was. he was a partisan that wanted to see his president succeed and in 2020 as we've reported, repeatedly, he was getting fed up. not just that president trump was detached from reality, but that he was consistently undermining the safety of the country. you know, even bill barr, it was too far for him to claim or stand by while the election was claimed to be rigged because that was going to hurt republicans in the long term, in his view, to question the integrity of the election with no credible evidence. i think one of the important strengths of bill bar's testimony whether you want to karate chop him, the strength of his argument is that he had a team. he deputized u.s. attorneys across the country and specifically in swing states with fbi agents to dig interest all of these claims that rudy giuliani kept throwing up on the wall like spaghetti, he had his team look at them and so when the president was in these private meetings saying, bill, why aren't you guys doing anything about this

trump's former attorney general, bill barr, testified about trump's detachment, not just from reality but, in many, many cases, the truth. so, i want to hold on here. bill barr making his argument that trump was detached from the truth and that's why he had to make a stand, it doesn't make very much sense. because the truth is, trump has been detached from the truth and pushing falsehoods since the beginning. i want to remind you trump repeatedly claimed he one man of the year award in michigan years ago. guess what, that award never existed. then, year after year he overstated his personal wealth so he could get on to the forbes 400 list. we should never forget sharpiegate, were trump pointed to an incorrect map to try to prove his own incorrect hurricane forecast. those are just three little examples. the washington post has over 30,000. so, while bill barr standing up for the truth under oath now, neither he, nor the rest of the administration did it thousands of times before. there is a lot we've got to cover tonight. so, let's get smarter with the help of our lead off panel, puli
