i'm chris hayes. as a result of friday's supreme court ruling from the courts trump's elected right wing majority, abortion is now completely banned in seven states, and bans are forthcoming in around a doze more. we are already hearing just heart-wrenching stories of clinics, being shut down, pregnant women unable to access abortions. if the most significant step back in terms of individual rights in recent memory. and we should be clear about one thing. the u.s. is, for better or for worse, a two party system. and the responsibility for the end of abortion rights in this country lies entirely with one of those parties. the reason this standout is the republican party has committed itself, full force, for the past half century, to overturning much of the broad civil rights revolution progress the last 60 years. but specifically, overturning roe as their number one target. republican presidential appointees have basically controlled a supreme court since the nixon administration. with the help, of cou

good evening from new york, i'm chris hayes. it did not seem like there could possibly be any secrets left, that there could be possibly be new have literally shocking details about the ex ex-president's plot to end american democracy. and yet, oh my, there is. yesterday's historic testimony from cassidy hutchison, and advisor, to chief of staff mark meadows, forced everyone to update their basic understanding of what it was we saw in the period leading up to and during the insurrection on january 6th, both for donald trump and the people who supported his attempts to end the peaceful transfer of power. the old model of our understanding of what happened on january 6th is basically as follows. the ex president told a bunch of lies about voter fraud and he refused to accept he lost, whether he believed it or not is unclear, he nurture those lies in this impetuous frenzy, rage filled, haphazard way. he threw everything against the wall to see what would stick in and out of court in a desperate attempt to cling to power, which culm

hayes. one of the biggest, most overwhelming themes of the january 6th committee's first two public hearings is that everyone knew the election was not rigged. all of the people around donald trump, other than a select, tiny little few, they all knew there was no big lie, or that the big lie was a big lie, that there was no fraud. they talked about it amongst themselves. some of them even said it directly to trump. but the other big theme is that nobody really did anything about it. none of them stood up and spoke the truth publicly. they all, in their own quiet way, went along with this lie. and that way, they are all, essentially, his accomplices. they knew what was happening was wrong. that's very clear. but they played along. even if they resisted internally, even if they didn't want to get their hands dirty, they helped to perpetuate trump's plan to overturn the election, which depended on convincing supporters the election was fraudulent. they did nothing to prick that bubble in public

a lot to be watching tonight as my friend chris hayes was covering on his show. we have eyes on this surprise development on possible gun safety reforms. last week i think the whole country was pretty skeptical it was announced that democrats led by senator chris murphy persuaded enough republican senators they might potentially be able to pass a modest package of gun reform not only through the house but through the senate. republicans over the course of this past generation have not become just hardliners. not just absolutist but indeed sort of maximalists when it comes to the policy issue of how many guns there ought to be on the streets in our country and what kinds of guns americans ought to have access to. i mean, i don't know why this is sort of stuck with me and hasn't stuck with anybody else. i'm going to keep saying it and hope it sticks with somebody else some day. do you remember -- we ought to remember what the republicans did first the last time they won full control of the u.s. government. january, 2017. after trump won the white house and republic

hayes about how he is feeling ahead of the hearing. >> i'm a little anxious, not necessarily in a good or excited kind of way, but going to find out some information, some may not be good, some may not be pleasant, i just want the truth about what happened that day. >> what did the terror mean for all of the people who were at the capitol, officer, staffers, people who were scared for their lives? >> i think it is going to be a very difficult night for the people who witnessed and experienced the january 6th insurrection firsthand. you know, of course, they want these details to come out into the public, they believe in the fact-finding mission of this committee, they believe in finding ways to hold the perpetrators accountable, but this is personal for them. and it's traumatic. and many of them have experienced tremendous personal trauma in the wake of these attack, they've talked openly about the, not only the physical pain but the mental health troubles that they had, and so to see all of this played out in video, in sort of wide recollection, the recordings of these witness intervi
