how did you get chosen to review darren byler's two books dealing with china? well, i i think that the reason i was asked to do it the la review of books approached me and and i commissioned me to do it and i think the reason they were interested in me is that i'm actually not a historian of china darren beiler has written about the the internment of the week of people's in western china, which is something that i don't know a whole lot about but something that i do know a lot about is the history of concentration camps. i'm currently writing a book called camps mask confinement in the modern world, which is a sort of long jury history of the camp from it's early origins in the 19th century all the way up until today. and so i think they were looking for someone outside the the field of chinese history and indeed they were looking for historian rather than anthropologist and ethnography which is what the author of the books being reviewed is so they were looking i think for an outsider who could provide a new perspective to rephrase to reframe some of the argum

first alert meteorologist darren peck is tracking the conditions and the possibility of rain. it full muggy in the east bay. >> an increase in humidity today, everybody will feel that, everybody will see the clouds. not everybody will get the rain. there is a lot of rain on the northwest coast, but here at home it's the north bay tonight into tomorrow morning. if we look at first alert doppler and switch over to futurecast, we're already seeing some of the leading edge of the showers come into the far northwest corner of sonoma county. we go into the evening, the showers increase. that gets us to 8:00, 9:00 tonight. widespread rain through sonoma county. then it keeps going on again, off again, all night. enough rain, we'll get a soaking, wetting rain into some of those drier forest fuels up there. this will at least extend farther into fire season, it will drag it out. so it will put it off for another couple of weeks. by july it will be like this never happened. but it is good news for the near term. in terms of the rest of our weekend, in terms of you getting rain, this is

here's darren bett. i want to focus on temperatures because over the weekend our heat came to an end, but we still have record—breaking temperatures for a while in spain and france and that pushed its way across austria, switzerland, the czech republic and germany. but how things have changed because today we are forecasting 22 degrees, a drop of 20 degrees in san sebastian in biarritz and france. not only is it much cooler across good parts of europe, but we have got clusters of rain and thunderstorms affecting some areas as well. in the uk we are seeing more clout over the next few days, but ahead of that there is strong sunshine and light winds and temperatures will be rising, perhaps not quite reaching the 33 degrees we peaked at last week. but untiljust recently those high temperatures were in hampshire in the sunshine. a very pleasant 22 or 23 degrees in southern parts of england and wales, perhaps even into eastern areas of scotland. but we have high pollen levels in many parts of scotland and v

let's start with a quick check of our weather with darren peck. >> we're in for quite the view this morning. the view from the stop of the sailsforce tower. we pasted the summer solstice. at 5:49 officially it happened at 5:47 and we pushed it back. as far as today is going to go, very much like the last few days. we start out in the mid to upper 50s for most locations. if we look across the bay, we're going back into the low 90s for many of the warmest inland spolts. in the upper 70s in the bay. just a few clouds on the water but it is sunny and warm. you could call these temperatures kind of hot if you want to. like livermore 96. kind of hot. it is only a couple of degrees above average for this time of the year. so that is not a bad place to be for late june and we'll be in the upper 70s for oakland. i'll be back with the rest of the complete forecast in a few minutes. for now, devin, back to you. >>> emotions are running high on both sides of the abortion debate after the supreme court issues the decision over turning roe v. wade. the 6-3 ruling was handed down on friday and rescinds th
