fetterman said democrats need to be ruthless. bernie sanders calls fetterman an outstanding progressive. fetterman admits he'll always vote with democrats. in this economy, that's the last thing we need. >> what do you think? >> well, i'm glad it's an ad focused on issues rather than his health, for sure. i actually agree that the issue around the health in and of itself, you have probably got a lot of men out there in pennsylvania who are thinking, you know, my doctor told me i need to do x, y, and z. but in this political environment, where republicans are expected to do quite well, where the wind is in republicans' sails, you do want to make sure you are positioned so that the median voter, the swing voter in the middle does not think you're too extreme. this ad really does a good job of talking about issues where fetterman is perhaps outside of where the mainstream or swing working class voter in pennsylvania is. the extent to which the health issue is going to be a problem is in an unfavorable political environment, a candid

fetterman in the hospital other than he had a stroke. a team removed a clot and then three days later in a really uniquely unusual moment, he had a defibrillator implanted. strokes are caused by clots that form in the heart when the heart fip rfib ril lates or quivers. what is very unusual is for a patient to get a defibrillator. when that was implanted a few day after his stroke was treated, the public was told this was being done to regulate his -- which is not why he had it done. they get them because they suffered cardiac arrest doctors believe they're at risk for cardiac arrest. but his campaign, and as you just heard in jeff zeleny's piece, they called this a hiccup. this is more like being hit by a truck, and for a candidate and campaign that has spoken a lot about being a straight shooter and being very transparent, they have been uniquely opaque about what happened to him. you know, most prominently, not making the -- not allowing the treating physicians in lancaster to make a statement. >> yeah. well, you heard from jeff zeleny

yet, questions about fetterman's health hang heavy over the race. in whispers among party officials and among some voters who privately raise their concerns. alyssa catalano, a friend of fetterman's who owns a business down the street from his home, says the family has tried to balance medical and political obligations. >> being personally close to the family, my priority at that time was like, don't just focus on getting better, don't worry about everyone, but i understand that he has a responsibility right now, but i think what i would say to those people is put yourself in their shoes. >> reporter: pennsylvania voters offered a mixed view. >> i think that his wife will keep him on track, so i think that if his doctors feel confident he can be released and campaign i'm not concerned. >> i think it creates a dangerous situation, as much for him as anything. >> reporter: it wasn't until friday that fetterman revealed he left a series of heart issues untreated for years. in a statement he confessed, i should have taken my health more seriously. the s

and that is fetterman. that all came to ahead during the primary cycle. i want to read for you a quote from federal minister acing his strokes, like so many others and so many men in particular, i avoided going to the doctor, even though i knew i didn't feel well, as a result i almost died and i want to encourage others to not make the same mistake. i know there was some frustration among the democratic party saying that he wasn't being transparent about how the situation. was and now we find that he almost died from that instance. do you think something like this will hurt him in the long run, despite the fact that his physicians are saying that is fine to go forward with his campaign? >> no, i don't think that it will hurt. him i think this is an opportunity for him, like he did in that letter, to really signal to people that you can't take your health for granted. he had medication that he was supposed to be taking since 2017 and didn't. so, what is doctors come out and said is that, providing he's exercising, eating healthy and taking its medication,

fetterman chatted just briefly. with fetterman sidelined, his wife gisele has stepped up trying to represent her husband, reassure nervous democrats that he's fit for a grinding general election campaign. joining me now is the correspondent you just saw in that little kip who talked with gisele fetterman. tell us more about this conversation. >> we saw john fetterman briefly, he was running errands and dropped by to say hello. he's still off the campaign trail and still not doing media, his wife gisele has gone from spouse to surrogate to step in. she said they both view of what happened here as a second chance. what he disclosed in that statement along with a letter from his cardiologist, he also said that -- he admitted he had not been following doctor's orders. he had not been taking his medication. he did not come in for a follow-up like he was supposed to. when loved ones are in harm's way, there is sort of a few stages of emotions. first you're worried and terrified. then you're relieved, then i sometimes tend

now you've got john fetterman and oz won that primary after the runoff friday. john fetterman acknowledging, quote, in a statement that he nearly died with that stroke the weekend before the election. he didn't acknowledge it for two days. then said apparently inaccurately that a -- that was not correct. now there's a credibility factor and he's not out on the campaign trail still. is he damaged as a candidate? >> i think long-term we don't know the answer to that right now. i think in the short-term there's clearly a lot of questions that the fetterman campaign need to be more transparent and quicker in answering. we need to understand the physical health of john fetterman before we can appropriately gauge the political health. this was always going to be a very close senate race. fetterman, who has some crossover appeal, won counties in 2018 that trump had won. the question now is, in a bad political environment for democrats, particularly in swing states like pennsylvania, how much more of a hurdle is convincing people that he's physically up to the job? the

five years. >> look, you don't need meet democrats in town that aren't worried about fetterman. he had a serious health issue, they weren't entirely honest, and that's a problem for any campaign. in all the reports that's come out, the most interesting thing is that some of the campaign taf didn't know he had the procedure when he had it. if you're not telling your campaign you're going in for mayor cardiac surgery, that suggests that the campaign and the candidate aren't on the same page and that can be a challenge when you get into a tight election where there will be a lot of close calls and snap decisions. you want everyone on that same page, and that's a problem. >> how does oz play this? >> it will be interesting, as mel was saying, if they try to make an issue of it at all. it's going to depend a lot on what happens. does he come back on the campaign trail? does he look and sound as good as new? is he able to proceed? it's not the kind of thing you want to make into an issue in that case. but does he, you know, do or say or seem any way that sort of gives ammunition to th

fetterman alluded to. he will be out of the race for the month of june. we have five months until the election. already they are saying he won't be a campaigner for at least 20% of the time that he has got between now and the election. that's only the smaller problem. the bigger problems are this. one, they apparently did not tell the truth about this procedure. they said it's a minor procedure initially. we had a defibrillator put in that's minor. lots of doctors, starting with doctors quoted in the "new york times" said if you have a defibrillator put in, it is far more significant health issue than they've let on. it turns out to be true. it turns out they knew he had health issues and didn't deal with them or make them public before he had the stroke just before the primary a couple of weeks ago. they have two issues of credibility here. they misled about the procedure but they also were not forthcoming about his health. this is going to be an issue. people will naturally ask the question can we trust him since he didn't tell the truth to us? more imp
