. >> joining us to decis, former nato commander james stavridis. he's also the author of the book, to risk it all. thanks for joining us. in your view, will this war last another 100 days or even beyond that? >> i think it will certainly last another 100 days. maybe 100 after that, but at some point, jake, the pressures on both sides are going to drive this toward a negotiation. putin's burn rate is occurring in two elements. one is cost. you know, war is hell. war is also really expensive. and secondly, lives. his killed in action numbers are ticking up. he's having trouble getting competent troops to the front. so he's got a burn rate going on that side. on the other side for president zelenskyy, who is heroic, extraordinary strategic communicator, despite all that, over time for the west, there will be inevitable cracks in support. those two things ultimately will bring these two, i believe, to a negotiation, whether that's three months from now or six months from now, i don't know, but we're not going to be at this for another couple years. >>

for analysis, admiral james stavridis, author of the book, to risk it all. nato expanding is the opposite of what putin was trying to accomplish strategically, though, what does it mean for the fighting in ukraine? >> this is a very good day for nato, and a very good day for the west, and a very good day for sweden and finland to come and join the alliance. let's put this in business terms, shep. this is cnbc this is an acquisition it is a blue chip acquisition. it has very high cash flows. it is two companies, if you will, that are ready to go they are turnkey operations on security and they share a long border which does nothing but complicate vladimir putin's security planning. look, i commanded these troops in afghanistan they were part of our nato forces that went to afghanistan. they were part of the war over libya, high-tech super professional, deeply capable, and long history of antipathy to russia we want them on the team bottom line, great day for nato. >> are you concerned at all, admiral, this could lead to increased aggression from the russians

retires four-star naval officer admiral james stavridis now, former supreme allied commander of nato and now an nbc news international security and diplomacy contributor. zelenskyy says that russian forces occupy 20% of ukraine now. is this a tipping point? >> i think we're at an inflection point, if i can, shep we are beginning by reiterating what you said up front, putin's initial objective was 100% of the country. he's managed to end up now with 20% of the country that's a failing grade on the other hand, it is still a fifth of this vast country of ukraine. so to your point, we are at a tipping point where both sides, the russians and the ukrainians, are approaching the point where there's going to be a negotiation. we cannot simply go on forever i think in the two to four-month future, we're going to see both sides need to get to some kind of a negotiation, shep >> you know, we're told, admiral, putin is digging in for a long war of attrition, and that he thinks the west is going to blink does he have the upper hand when it comes to the long game? >> i don't think so, but i'll ad

. >> joining me now is the former nato supreme allied commander retired admiral james stavridis and he is also the author of "to risk it all: nine conflicts and the crucible of decision" which is a fascinating look at several decision-makers and decision points. sir, i do want to ask you just straight up is ukraine losing right now? >> no, i don't think so, brianna. you know, life is kind of compared to what, and if you go back 90 days ago then i would have felt like, boy, they're going to lose this thing. that's when we thought the russians were going to sweep across the entire country and take over the capital, and that was plan a. we're now in plan b. this is frankly a smaller level of conflict, but it accuse advantage to the russians, brianna, because they can pack their forces in a much smaller area, they can overcome some of the logistics challenges they faced when they were spread out. so, no, i don't think the ukrainians are on the verge of losing in a big sweeping way, but you are going to see days where the ukrainians score some hits and the converse with the russians. look f

. >> joining us is james stavridis and jonathan lemire. he was in madrid. admiral, what is the expansion with the addition of finland and sweden? what does that do for the alliance as well as putting u.s. troops permanently in poland? >> first and foremost, they are absolutely terrific partners. we welcome them as allies. they deployed in combat alongside us to afghanistan, libya, the balkans. these are two terrific nations. this is a plus up for nato. that border is something putin has to worry about. now he has said he will move russian troops to counter the addition of the nations. guess what? that means those are russian troops no longer available for his increasingly flailingly operation in ukraine. huge plus. point two, putting u.s. troops in eastern europe, when i was supreme allied commander, i could only dream of having a three star army general in warsaw. that's what's happening. that staff will be superb. it will guide the efforts of the rotational troops behind it. it strengthens our defenses. nato is a defensive alliance. i have seen and read a
