and i wonder, if anyone else could have brought out this testimony as effectively as liz cheney, and possibly, could anyone else have made this particular witness as comfortable and ready to deliver that testimony? >> that's a good point. and i've got to be honest with you, as i sat in the room, and i watched liz cheney ask her the questions, i thought that that was so powerful. because these are too conservative republican women, and that is a republican leader, asking her questions, asking her to testify to facts and the truth. and these are two women, who stood strong in the face of their own party, who is going to continue to trash them, and is going to continue to try to undermine their work. but the fact of the matter is, you can't undermine list cheney, in terms of conservativism. you can't really undermine cassidy, who worked for scalise, who worked for ted cruz. she knows that these republican congressional people know her, they know her by the by name. she's walked those calls and congress. so, it was such an important moment, i think, and i think you're absolutely correct

and, i think the same will be true for liz cheney. i think that she will be remembered for this moment, right? for the fact that she, you know, voted with donald trump 90% of the time, which means she believes in all of the policies that republicans believe in, which is not providing for the american people, providing for that wealthy, and all of these things. but, because the backbone to stand up, on this one issue, lying, the preservation of our democracy, i am not going to be aboard the trump train. i am not doing this. so, you know, i think that she set the tone that she is very clear about the fact that our democracy hangs in the balance, and this isn't about loyalty to a thing. it is about the preservation of our democracy moving forward, and that we are in a dangerous moment, and her former party is at the forefront of that. kurt, we talked earlier in the shield about the fact that fox news refused to show it with sound and go to commercial while it was happening. do you think the strategy worked for them? >> no, i think it bac

liz cheney has described it as a dereliction of duty. we know from great reporting in the "washington post" that trump was transfixed by the images he saw on his television. we know that the white house was never on lockdown, so unlike mike pence, trump was never rushed to the pioc as he was during protests in the summer and we learned more recently that trump cheered when he learned they wanted to hang mike pence and they were chanting that. how much do you think the focus on that 187 minutes serves this committee as they try to refocus the country? >> well, i think about the -- now what i think of as the katyal questions and the vance questions. like, you know, stuff that donald trump did that day to try to -- how his -- what his reactions were, what he did or didn't do in that period is definitely in the vance category, not the katyal category, because how close to command and control trump was in terms of trying to overturn the election, that's not in the wheelhouse of that. i think these issues are super important in the vance categ

liz cheney was calling out a lot of republicans last night. one of them is scott perry. she said they saw pardons from the white house. i had to hear it's twice because i was so taken aback by that. what is the significance of that? that lawmakers were saying i might need a pardon? >> i think it is very significant. she did not lay out the significance. she teased that there will be more of this in the next few weeks. the fact that one of the republicans from pennsylvania who was instrumental in trying to help the former president overturn the election results in pennsylvania, the fact that after january 6 he asked the president for a pardon shows that the reaction and response and what happened, he got very nervous that perhaps he was personally criminally or civilly liable. scott perry put out a statement today saying that was absolutely false. he did not do that. i do not think the committee is very concerned about overreach. they have done that in the past and it is really it th. they said they would not put out out there if they did not have evidence. yamiche: somet

that's what liz cheney is trying to tell the republicans and the public. they didn't go at this thinking, we are going to indict donald trump, because that's not within their power. they went out this trying to figure out what were the events that led to our democracy almost getting a mortal dagger in the heart. what's almost led to a situation in which we might not have a duly elected president running the country today, it's a few things that gone differently on that violent, chaotic, series of events on january 6th. so ginni thomas is ultimately a sideline, a slight player, in the effort to understand what happened, what caused january six and how do we prevent it from happening again? i think the committee is very much, according to my sources, mindful of their central duty. if a president can make this happen, if a president can lead to the fomenting of a mob that attacked our democracy, and threatens to kill our vice president, then we have to find ways to stop that through laws, through statutes, policy, we have to prevent that from happening again.
