we saw this video of congressman loudermilk giving a tour. the capitol police are saying there was no evidence he led a reconnaissance tour with trump supporters. i'm wondering what your view is of this? >> anderson, i read the letter that was signed by chief manger, and i found it incredibly irresponsible. to me the letter reeked of outside pressure. first of all, the u.s. capitol police is not the lead investigative agency with regards to the capitol breach and the insurrection on january 6th. the lead investigative agency is the fbi and department of justice so at the very least the expectation would have been that they would defer any questions to the fbi and the department of justice. but they didn't do that, they chose to answer. when i went through it line by line, it looks to me like chief manger was engaging in a game of semantics. he first refers to the fact that they didn't enter the capitol building when in fact they entered the capitol complex. the cannon and they are connected to the capitol building. the fact that you have an i

it's a tour given by republican georgia congressman by barry loudermilk of the capitol complex. in response, loudermilk actually filed an ethics complaint against nearly three dozen house democrats, in may 2021, saying, quote, no republican member of congress led any kind of reconnaissance tours through the capitol, proven by security footage. the claim of a tour and the congressman, it all sat there for about a year. but about a month ago, the january 6th committee sent loudermilk a letter, saying, the select committee's review of evidence directly contradicts that denial. on may 19th, the same day the committee sent that letter, loudermilk released a statement, acknowledging he gave a tour -- okay, interesting -- to, quote, a constituent family with young children. the next day, he released a video saying he took, quote, a family with young children and their guests to lunch in a house building. today, the january 6th committee sent congressman loudermilk another letter asking him to appear before the committee to testify, and included in the letter is this security footage, t

here now is the a formentioned congressman barry loudermilk. congressman first of all your reaction to the devils and you're cleared but cnn says not so fast. >> thanks for having me on and for covering this. just three or four weeks ago i find out about these accusations not from a letter that the committee sent to me. no, they sent it to the press as i'm going to the airport and then i'm seeing my picture on the television screens of all these passengers that are seeing that i'm some kind of strange conspiracy -- or evil conspirator here. and it's just ridiculous that the way that they're handling this committee -- and they keep moving the goal posts. you know, the original charge was, we gave tours of the capitol. there were no tours of the capitol that day. video evidence is there were no tours of the capitol. oh then they say oh, it was the capitol complex. there were hundreds of people in the capitol complex, the house office buildings. in fact it was the democrat leadership ordered the gift shop opened on the 5th because there were so ma

we should be clear that congressman loudermilk has not been accused of anything. we asked him to come and talk because we had interest in what he did know. but that video raises a lot of questions in the minds of various people. and of course there was another video found of one of the people who is on the tour, on january 6th, and he was very much traveling with the maga crowd and had an interaction with another guy in the crowd, who had fashioned his american flag into a weapon. and z said that it was for a special person and they chore told about that. but i certainly am very interested in this and think that there might be some evidence there. of course, this is one small detail in a huge picture of lots of people being involved in the ultimate mob violence that beset the capitol. >> yeah, rachel covered this extensively in the previous hour. and one of the man who was on tour with the loudermilk next day on january 6th is on video threatening nancy pelosi chuck schumer, congressman nadler alexandria cozumel cortez -- >> aoc. >> threatening them with violence

. >> the committee showed barry loudermilk. one of those people were seen screaming threats at house members. watch this. >> there's no escape pelosi, schumer. nadler. we're coming for you. we're coming in like white on rice for pelosi, nadler, schumer, even you aoc. we're coming to take you out. we'll pull you out by your hairs. how about that, pelosi? >> i mean, these people are just whack a dos. loudermilk refuses the speak to the committee. what do you think about his involvement in all of this? >> part of the problem is he's given confusing and contradictory statements about what he did. i think initially he denied giving anyone a tour. then he had minimized what he did and now you have documentary evidence not only of what you showed. i don't know if he heard those communities but you have a tour that he gave where it showed people taking pictures in the office complex where members of the house of representatives work and their staffs work. taking pictures of things like stairwells and hallways that are not usually the k

and then you have representative loudermilk actually pointing out certain things. what was he pointing out? all of this is extremely suspicious. one,light of his original denial, having said that he gave no such tour, and, secondly, the fact one of those people is actually on tape, as you pointed out in the beginning of the segment, actually saying he was going after pelosi, going after schumer, et cetera. so when you put all of the evidence together, this is extremely suspicious and on top of it all it's consistent with what was going on with the idea that the proud boys and the oath keepers were basically planning a military operation. they went into that capitol from two different ends lined up as you would if you were conducting a military operation, and a key part of any military operation is to do a surveillance beforehand. so the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. we obviously don't have all of the glue that ties it together yet. but i think the committee is on to something really important here. really important. >> and that's new tonight,

there's all of this controversy surrounding georgia congressman barry loudermilk. again, he is pushing back on the notion that he led a reconnaissance tour the day before the january 6th attack. we're watching some video of this right now. the committee had put out this video of a man taking photos of tunnels, hallways, staircases the day before the insurrection. what do you make of this? >> well, there certainly is some suspicious movements and actions in that video, jim, but big picture, i don't think there's enough evidence at this point to conclude that representative loudermilk knowingly gave reconnaissance or intended to aid the rioters. there's just too many outstanding questions. did the people he gave the tour to enter the capitol? it appears not. most importantly i've not seen any evidence showing that loudermilk knew that anyone had bad intentions. i think we need to be careful here. there's no way a prosecutor would charge this case. there's no way a jury would convict based on the evidence as it is. maybe the committee has more, but as things stand rig

tighten the screws on representative loudermilk. if he's stone walling and letting people in the day before an insurrection, bring him in, issue a subpoena and have that fight with him. this is one of those weird moments in an investigation where the answer is right there. it is abundantly clear whether this was just a metal detector or something more than that. >> david, i want to get back to your point if we could on what today is going to focus on, largely surrounding a former vice president mike pence, right? and we're going to hear from someone who is consequential, especially in a moment like this, that is former federal judge michael luttig. and what we know he's going to say, part of his statement released is that if pence would have gone through, with president trump's plan, to try to block all of this, it would have been tantamount to a revolution within a paralyzing constitutional crisis. could you speak to that? pence won't be there, but he has certainly not moved to block anyone around him from sharing information. >> y

the reaction from loudermilk, the committee or at least the suggestion was he's leading this recontour. what do you think of his response? >> i think there's a lot of explaining to do, in part on the part of the capitol police officers because they exonerated him and the question is is it the definition of a reconnaissance tour, does that imply that loudermilk knew what he was doing that may well not be the case, but the committee's got the tapes. they released the tapes, and these are folks who are getting a tour on the day the capitol was closed to visitors, and there are folks taking pictures who apparently showed up at the riot at places you don't normally take pictures. >> the receipts from one day where you see the people taking the photographs. they're back the next day, one of them on tape making threats outside the capitol. what do you make of this back and forth? >> it's troubling and one hopes that the committee really has hard sort of evidence and more there than simply sending a letter out that they released publicly. lofgren said he didn't even get it himself. so there's
