it's burning just northeast of downtown napa. dangerously close to about 50 buildings at last check and the fire erupted at about 3.30, this afternoon along old soda springs road and has already grown to about 120 acres. it is 5% contained and there are mandatory evacuations in place. 20 deputies with the napa county sheriff's department have been going door to door for the last hour or so to let people know that they have to go. and the napa county animal response team is now at work. they are helping to move large livestock like courses and there then being taken to a shelter at the valley brook equestrian center over at 11 32 el center avenue. they say if you need help, do call the number on your screen before showing up. mandatory evacuations are happening in the area of 1300 soda canyon road over up to the dead end. there. and there's also a road closure at soda canyon and silverado trail. that's going to be in effect until further notice. and the trouble here is that it's a sunny, dry, hot and breezy day out there this afte

here's napa and soda springs. as we get close, if you live in this area, you're getting the evacuation warning. take a look at this. you can see how close this fire is to old soda springs road that comes around this way. if you're getting of actuations on loma vista drive, you're too close. make sure to pay attention to those alerts. you may also be asked to evacuate. all of soda springs road is under evacuations but area around this may be asked to evacuate because of the conditions those firefighters are facing. the way the fire is progressing and the way though wind is moving, he could blow the smoke, flames and embers towards atlas peak road. there is also fire road that may be asked to evacuate later tonight. a good reminder for anyone that is close to this, that can smell the smoke have to make sure to know where those go bags are. i'm extremely happy to see the fire retardant drops. >> yeah, that is the new protocol, the protocol right now is to attack it as quickly as possible to see if they can illuminate

of napa county. in the past 30 minutes, authorities issuing new evacuations because of large vegetation fire. this is all near old soda springs road, just north of the city of napa. this fire now covers 120 acres. it's believed to be 5% contained. >> so it's going to be a long night. we've seen how fire crews have made some great saves. they stopped the front edge of that fire from reaching a home. they've been firing this fire retardant drop plane over many of the hot spots. in other area, we've seen crews doing structure protection, settings up right in front of homes as the smoke plumes start to crowd up into the sky. air crews have been tackling with air drops. let's focus on evacuations, because that's all about the science of the fire and what's going on the ground. but there are people in the middle of this story. and first, really, the danger zone was just along that old soda springs road that i don't see there on the left of the map. but then a short time ago, cal fire expanded the evacuatio

this is in napa county. it's an area northeast of the city of napa near the silverado resort. there's fire breaking out about 4:00 kred afyesterday afternoon the silverado country club near the burn scar of the 2017 atlas fire. now at last check, the fire was almost 600 acres. it's only 5% contained but we are going to get an update from cal fire this morning, and that number is certain to have gone up overnight because as jessica has been talking about, fire conditions have been favorable for firefighters on the ground. they have been there all night trying to get things under control. it's been burning in the mainly wooded and brush covered area, but a lot of dry fuel there in the air quality management district has issued an air quality advisory because of all the smoke we're seeing from the fire. we're going to keep an eye on it, including cal fire's update this morning. back to you. >>> happening today, a push at the state capitol to increase staffing for cal fire. >> the president of the union says the agency is severely under staffed. >> tim edwards, the cal fire union

amy hollyfield is live in napa county with more. amy: good morning. yeah, you do not see active fire, but as soon as you pull into this area, you know something has happened, there has been or is a fire. look how smoky it is. it definitely smells out here. it is very evident that a fire is happening here, but you do not have that sense that everyone is running scared and we do not see flames. firefighters said last night that they felt they had a good handle on this one, and they did lift those evacuation orders around midnight. they're letting workers and residents back into the area, allowing people to return home. they were able to attack this one from the air because the weather was cooperating and they could launch the aircraft, and firefighters were also on the ground. this started 3:30 yesterday afternoon. they are still out here, not turning their back on it. they are calling this the old fire, it burned north of the city of napa, near soda canyon road, a pretty rural area known for fire activity. the atlas fire here in 2017. so residents here

a wildfire and napa county continues to grow faster than fire crews can contain it. this is the first large wildfire to hit the bay area this season. now firefighters are battling old fire that started around 3.30 tuesday afternoon in the area of old soda springs road. so far, only 5% of that fire is contained. the evacuation orders have expired and residents can now return. cal fire is asking residents to take extreme caution when returning as there is emergency personnel. and the bay area air quality management district issued an advisory for the north bay for hazy, smoky conditions. fire crews will remain working in that area. the fire season is year-round now and yet north bay state senator mike mcguire says the state's top firefighting organization doesn't have enough men and women to do the job. mcguire is trying to sound the alarm to change all of that force. dan kerman has that story. >> we need to fix the cal fire firefighter shortage and we can't wait another year to do it. >> state senator mike mcguire represents the north bay were bone dry. hillsides are
