but remind us what the committee wants to learn from navarro. >> well, the big thing about peter navarro was he was one of the principal architects of this attempt to subvert the will of the voters and prevent the certification of the election results and he was pretty bold in his declarations. in fact, he wrote a book about it and he had hatched this plan called the green bay sweep which involved standing in the way of the certification of the results at the state legislative level and a number of midwest states that were key to joe biden's victory. and the committee wanted to ask him about that. they wanted to ask specifically what role the former president played in encouraging this, the role that he played in terms of his position as a taxpayer funded member of the trump administration, and what interactions he had with the trump campaign and the other ancillary republican groups that were supporting this effort to undermine the election results, including the group that was kind of headlined by the former mayor of new york city, rudy giuliani. but it's important to point out the fac

peter navarro was arrested at an airport yesterday. he has been charged by the department of justice with two counts of contempt of congress, for his refusal to comply with the january six committee subpoena. the first count was for failing to appear for a deposition. the second was for failing to produce documents that the committee requested. navarro did not enter a plea during a court appearance on friday. earlier this friday, he filed suit against the january six committee in a attempt to block subpoenas, as well as separate criminal subpoenas he's received from the department of justice. all along, navarro has insisted, he is unable to cooperate because of issues of executive privilege. it is an argument that has already been shot down by the courts. navarro has refused to speak with the january six committee about the role in the scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 election. he has certainly been open with almost everybody else about it. he really has not been shy about the plan that he and his fellow crony, steve bannon,

navarro follows that of steve bannon. covered by the same set of rules meyers and bolten were covered by, do not enjoy executive privilege? >> steve bannon is drawn to congress, subpoenaed to congress to talk about things well after he left the white house staff. so yes, he doesn't have executive privilege. navarro is making an argument that he does, if the bolten and meyers standard is applied he doesn't. i have some personal experience with this. because i was threatened with a contempt citation if i did not reply to a subpoena from congress regarding the u.s. attorneys appointments in second bush term and there were negotiations between white house lawyers under bush and under obama and with the congressional officials who were in charge of this to arrive at an understanding of what i could come forward and talk about that was not what i told the president but what i had conversations with others in the administration. so the executive privilege was protected by basically walling off any conversations i may or may not

so certainly navarro's would come later. what is at stake if navarro is convicted? >> well, these contempt cases are only for punishment. it has nothing to do with trying to force him to actually cooperate to testify to provide his documents. this is punishment for his refusal to do so. but it does send a strong message of deterrence. now that he's been charged, he's going to be in the justice system working his way through it as a criminal defendant. i think other people take notice and as the committee continues the work as doj continues its work in a criminal investigation of perhaps the january 6th events, i think people will think long and hard about whether they want to also thumb their noses at this process. because it could have serious results for them. >> and we should note that at the present time, it's one -- prison time is up to a year behind bars. j f thank you for your expertise. >>> uvalde, texas, we wait for a detailed report of what exactly happened inside the school. and there are more funerals today for victims. cnn has just obtained new document
