this is a 56-acre plot of land here at the port of oakland where the oakland a's would like to build their new ball park. a report by the san francisco bay conservation and development commission says this area is not needed by the port, and on thursday they could vote to approve the use of the space by the a's. the coalition of shippers and terminal operators are opposed to this and suing to stop it, and this afternoon they invited us out here to show the howard terminal is in fact vital for two significant port operations. one, agricultural exports, and two the staging of empty containers, which you can see. there are about 2900 empty containers on site right now. a sign of the recent surge of imports from asia. they question why anyone would want to see a ball game or live in a busy industrial area like the port. >> you have to fight to maintain industrial uses, and one of the reasons why you need to have a dedicated buffer zone, you need to make sure you're not encroaching on your industrial use is because when people and industries live in the same space and they're not properly
