his numbers are around where trump trump's were, they are tilly a hair bit lower right now. and what you see historically, and this is certainly true for trump, true for past presidents, those numbers by may or june rolls around, they don't tend to change that much between the late spring or early summer and the actual midterms themselves. if those patterns hold, biden will have a real problem nudging those numbers up no matter what he is talking about. and the reason you see so many republicans saying that maybe they should take some action on guns because they want to get back to talking about inflation. >> tonight the first public hearing of the january 6 committee, obviously the main event. what do we need to see from this to break through? >> it is a huge challenge for members from both parties who sit on that committee. and there are two challenges. one is that we have now been emersed in january of since january 6, 2021, but the other is that huge swathe of viewers in this country who are the ones who, you know, many of the members of this committee want to really be

powell: the taylor rules do not take into consideration changes in financial conditions. they just look at the overnight policy rate. as i mentioned earlier, we began signaling -- we are set up to signal policy changes going forward with the summary of economic projections that we do four times a year. mark its price that in. you are getting a lot of policy tightening well in advance of actually raising rates. as you point out, we are at 1.6% on the federal funds rate, look at the rate curve. very substantial additional rate hikes already priced in, and they have been for several months. that is one way of thinking about it. it is only at the very short end of the curve where rates are still in negative territory from a real perspective. if you look further out, real rates are positive across the curve, and that is really what you are trying to achieve with policy in the situation like this where we have 40 year highs in inflation and we know we need to have restrictive policy. that is where we are headed. sen. tillis: in 2012, the fed adopted its current 2% inflation tar

it's very good of you to both join us here in terms of this addition, in terms of the change of turkey's mind. we were expecting it, but we were certainly not expecting it so early on, right at the beginning of the summit. well, we were very excited. we came through helsinki and stockholm on our way here to madrid just to show our support that there is bipartisan support in the united states senate for the accession applications of both finland and sweden. and we wanted to make sure that turkey knew that the finland and sweden knew that and that everyone here knows that because they both bring tremendous capabilities and they share our values. they will be a great asset with naito. but turkey had its concerns and of course nato is about consensus. so how did you convince and how was turkey convinced to overcome their concerns? is it quite a high price that nato is paying for this? i think we should give credit to finland, sweden and turkey because their discussions that have been ongoing since they announced that they would like to join nato, that made the difference. of course, other me
