he lives in that community, works at u.c. berkeley, and was part of a group of local leaders who denounced thproud boys. and i asked him what he thought they were trying to do that day. >> cause terror, cause harm. you know, there. is. so much misunderstanding. and i think there's a lot of fear of hate towards the lgbtq community, but that really probably comes from fear. but i think that was the intended purpose was to stop the program and to say that that that the. this community is not inclusive in welcoming. and i think that was their intention. you know, we are seeing a rapid rise in discriminatory policies across the country. but san fran, the san francisco bay area, is n texas. it's not florida. and so the fact that this could happen right here in the bay area, it. it's cause for concern because this is no longer an issue that's far away. this isn't this is it's home. it's in our backyard. it's our community. and that's really telling that this is a very serious issue and it must be addressed. and this is the moment. >

berkeley and harvard and all of these other extraordinary schools, i'm blown away by them, i'm hopeful because in some of our reentry programs where now people that i know and i grew up with who deserve a second chance have a safe affordable place to call home and an opportunity to rebuild their lives. i'm hopeful because the keynotes who will be performing today just released their first album and, man, let me tell you -- [applause] these kids, who are now becoming teenagers could be doing a lot of other things and they are using their musical talent to uplift the community. i am hopeful about the future. juneteenth gives us a time to reflect on that history. and, yes, it's a challenging history. but it is also a history where it demonstrates our resilience as a people. and when people knock us down and when people tear us down and people come for us, it makes us stand stronger and it makes us fight harder and it makes us push in order to transform things, not just for ourselves personally. but for the people around us. the grandmothers who raised us. the people we played tag with gro

and a recent study by the u.c. berkeley urban displacement project, who benefits from tenant protections, the most effective tools stabilizing neighborhoods and communities. the study also found combining rent control with protections, particularly those of lower socioeconomic strata. rent control also ensures the market raise housing of today as i said provides the affordable rents of tomorrow. and because it's tied to the consumer price index, it provides all of that, still ensuring that investors earn a reasonable rate of return on their investment. at its core, rent control is the bedrock of stable communities and i think we have experienced that with san francisco rent control law dating back to 1979. i want to really emphasize this because san francisco is an archipelago of intact neighborhoods and communities and resell yens of the communities over time is one of the reasons why the democratic system i think is so robust. stable communities means neighborhoods and neighbors who have relationships with each o
