herschel walker is testing the maximum extent of that. because he is, i think they've been very few candidates who have ever raised as many doubts about their own qualifications for the job, and he's in the ballgame because georgia is a tipping point state, it's a close state, and voters as we saw with biden's polling, about 34 for 4%, or really unhappy with the way things are going in the country. but even amid all of that, in this poll today by fabrizio and as a lonely, raphael warnock is winning one quarter of the voters who say they disapprove of joe biden. go back to 2018, there was no more than roughly ten or 11% in any state of voters who disapprove to trump who said they're gonna vote for the republican candidate and he's going to win 24%, by the way, john fetterman is very similar to that in another poll today in pennsylvania so, the question is can they separate themselves from what is very real disenchantment with biden, especially by focusing on weaknesses in their opponents? >> speaking of walkers, he still got 93% of republi

i suspect a lot of people voting for brian kemp might just leave herschel walker blank. but if we're not stages a strong, would he be able to pull stacey abrams over the line or could this still be a split race? >> absolutely. i think that cliff's point is incredibly apt. the idea that these polls are indicating trends that we are seeing in this moment -- and so, when we are thinking about the midterm elections, it is going to be a battle of the [inaudible] that's what we are looking at. if you are looking at an enthusiastic and determined democratic voting base that is enthusiastic about warnock, i don't see a world where that doesn't translate to the abrams race. but also, to the other exciting races that are on the ticket. talking about secretary of state, -- win and there are some exciting candidates in the state house, with these huge issues on the table. i think that georgians are going to the polls with some demands. and we are talking about protecting bodily autonomy, we are talking about the fact that we are now a -- carry state. we are talking about inflation.

with 85% saying they back him and just 5% who say they back herschel walker. for perspective, that's even less than 9% support for republican governor brian kemp. joining me as washington correspondent for the atlanta journal-constitution, commissioner. letitia, think joining us. what do you make of this latest play numbers? the polling numbers shows that raphael warnock as the incumbent does seem to have a slight edge. we had a recent poll as well. we did not show warnock with as much of a commanding lead but we did so show him with a slight edge. and so i think it shows that there are a lot of limitations to herschel walker, his campaign has struggled we know recently. and again, raphael warnock as the incumbent seems to be slightly ahead. but as we know, there are still 100 days until the election. >> i know you wrote about how some of biden's recent legislative winds could actually give democrats a boost in november. but there is a lot coming against them, right? the economy and abortion access among top issues foremost georgia voters. will it be enough? g

>> i've got to go with herschel walker. i spent some time atlanta over the last couple of weeks in it seem to me that herschel walker has reached the venerable todd aiken zone in which yes he is a look at nominee, he has won that nomination. but i don't think the reasonable republican see him as an alternative to raphael warnock who is a genuine georgian for both atlanta and savannah. is the legacy of being in the past for a doctor with the kings church and has done a pretty good job in the senate on a bipartisan basis. herschel walker seems to have completely been in the crazy illegitimate candidate at this point zone. i don't see him being a real threat to raphael warnock. but that said, the caveat there is -- have been on a now for your crusade to suppress votes. and that's always a factor. we can't act like it doesn't matter. even with the subpar candidate likes herschel walker. >> we're gonna talk about the georgia varies a lot more in our hour two with some recent polling suggests. but susan, same question to you. pic

with senator warnock now taking on herschel walker, the big news today he is calling on herschel walker to debate in october. this is basically a one to three point race. how do you see it? >> look, walker can absolutely win this thing. georgia is less of a swing state than people think. it had a lot to do with donald trump in 2020. the fact is that walker is polling really close right now in the summer when democrats tend to outperform georgia in the polls. can he pull this race off. in fact, when you go back to 1980, carter on the ballot. georgia's former governor. matt became an accidental senator for one term. revolted. same thing can happen here walker can win. >> brian: first things you want to do reform the election laws. rein them in, not limit it got mislabeled in my view jim crow 2.0. how did that play with the people of georgia being labeled like that. how did it play that the primaries had record showing that had you this horrible election change, why did everyone come out in the primaries? >> the law was completely misrepresented by stacey abrams so much so the major league

could herschel walker drag down brian kemp? >> we do not see this very often in georgia politics, or really anywhere these days. which is a split ticket dynamic. what we are seeing right now, is especially kemp supporters dropping away from republican herschel walker. either because of his, lies exaggerations, struggled on the campaign trail. right now, herschel walker is doing everything he can just to bring up biden, biden, biden. because biden's approval rating in georgia is just 36%. at the same, time senator warnock is trying to demonstrate his independently precedence, while also his report support for cory democratic policies and proposals. and his call for suspending the gas tax, capping the price of insulin, and other measures that he says will help the states economy, and the national economy, revive. >> renewing concerns about voter suppression, from the recently passed election laws there? >> november is going to be the day task, because even though we have a state primary, we are hundreds of thousands of voters cas

i am thinking of herschel walker, dr. oz, erica brightens, perhaps others. what is that doing to mitch mcconnell's hopes of being the majority leader in the new congress? >> i think you just have to look at his behavior. right now he seems like he is upset about the possibility of the democrats passing this prescription drug bill that you discussed earlier in the show. and also the competitivess bill. i think the democrats clearly want to say we are doing something. we can get things done, and mitch mcconnell's tactic over the years has been to stall, obstruct, he is employing that tactic now at the risk of looking hypocritical because he supports these bills ipast. so, the question becomes what does he think? just what you said, mike, he is worried now that looks better for the democrats with weak republican nominees looking and running for the senate seats. the numbers in georgia have shifted recently with suddenly senator warner doing much better against herschel walker. look in pennsylvania, similar shifts. i think setor mcconnell's were aware of it. >>

and the fact that herschel walker is running means that, no matter who wins that race, georgia will have at least one black senator in the future, going forward. but beyond skin color, beyond epidermal concerns, there is virtually nothing that these men have in common. certainly not their level of qualification. and so it's a kind of dual cynicism, that is operating here. >> and i think it's also the case that warnock is just one of the most distinct and remarkable individuals who ever served in the u.s. senate, just in terms of his background and his bio and where he's he comes from and what he represents, in terms of the actual pasture from martin luther king and martin luther king junior's church -- a man who was born into poverty who is now a u.s. senator and an active pastor -- that, it's not just a kind of random democrats next to the name, a generic democrat. there is someone here who has a pretty remarkable set of qualifications. >> sure. and that's keeping over the part about him earning a doctorate. i think that those two things, obviously -- even outside the question of what t

donna, let's talk about herschel walker and his competence for a moment. he's taking on rafael warnock from georgia, i want to read you a piece from politico. warnock is widely seen as the wide gop opportunities along with nevada, arizona and new hampshire. to make good on those chances most republicans want it to be a clean referendum on joe biden rather than the quality of their candidates. still one republican operative involved in senate races said behind the scenes that earlier this summer there was almost existential concern about the walker campaign. this republican who spoke candidly on condition of anonymity said there is still time for a course correction, but that if the election were today he would not win. are you reading, donna, a sense of panic at all from that reporting among republicans and how could democrats capitalize on somebody like herschel walker and the bizarre comments that he has been making over the last couple of months? >> well, i think that this is why you can even see right now that rafael warnock, senator warnock has an adv

you've been critical of the republican candidate there, herschel walker. i want you to listen, i'm sure you heard this already, walker, what he said during a gop picnic in hall county, georgia. have a list. >> if we don't control the air, our good air is going over to take over the bad air. so, now the good air, that bad air got to move. so it moves on to good airspace. and now, we got to clean this back up. >> that in answer to the question to climate change. i just wonder, in light of comments like this and others right, where he's been proven to be less than truthful. in your view, is walker qualified to serve in the u.s. senate? >> well, the part that troubles me and this goes back to the post-election debackle with david perdue, georgia is a very republican state. and we should have two less republican senators representing us. that's not the case. rafael nrawarnock with 97% of t vote, herschel walker, he won very easily in the primary process. we all knew he was going to have tough question. we hope he continues to dive into the questions. articulate

let's switch to georgia, this paul that i think will favor and do really well for herschel walker. he is behind warknock but this is how republicans feel about him, the motivation poll, really motivated in 2022, you can see 81% of supporters are republicans, support walker as opposed to 74% for warknock, this is huge news not only for water but the republican party especially republican senator kelly leffler. i spoke to her about how she is trying to shift the mood and the way that republican voters feel about elections and try to get them out to the polls, trying to get people to trust the system enough to show up at the polls. griff: in the georgia fox paul inflation tops the list of important issues but it would appear herschel walker's biggest challenge is to prove to not only republicans, but to independents that he can do something to help georgians at the gas pump, at the grocery store. aishah: inflation will be the number one issue, there are things being worked out in the senate but i think inflation is number one and we are seeing this across the country where even in nev

. >> let's say herschel walker, who is involved in a series of scandals that might have taken down a politician in the past, can he still win? it's quoted saying never has there been a candidate who was more emblematic of how politics has become a team short as herschel. >> and that's part of the problem. no matter how they disqualify themselves as a candidate you would think for the mainstream, you will still get a majority -- a vast majority of the republicans are going to back herschel walker and no matter how many affairs or children that he has, that race in georgia is going to be razor thin because republicans just aren't going to abandon him. that's what we see not only with walker but lots of other republican candidates. >> in our last 30 seconds, jonathan, is the only real chance trump loses his grip if lots of republicans start losing? >> yes. >> because that's your column, right? herschel walker is just a disaster of a candidate. that should be a very winnable race for republicans in the state of georgia in the year of our lord 2022. that guy is a rough guy to put out there as you're nominee. >> yeah, i think that is why democrats should be looking better in the senate, if you look at 5:38, it is showing that, democrats transform the house pretty low, but senators is a coin flip. a lot of this is because of candidate quality. i want to look sometimes with america we get some -- american politics, suddenly something might just happen in france for on a very low ratings, in the final run he was put up against le pen who was insane, racist, unacceptable, and so michael went instead of despite his low versus ratings this is the model that the democrat needs in the senate races where you disqualify the herschel walker's in the world loves to extremist. maybe it's this masters that wins in arizona, you can see doctor oz in pennsylvania, ron johnson who we talked about last time i was on the show. all of us can spare
