the mariposa grove is right here, the donut hole that did not burn. and what that fire did instead, it burned directly to the north first, and then it made a hard right towards all this stuff, which hadn't seen any fire for many decades. and it took off. so the fact that the mariposa grove, which has been treated through a combination of prescribed burns and some tree thinning for decades now, and it came through this unscathed is a wonderful example of what some of the work that can be done here to prevent these worst-case scenarios. that fire didn't go to the north because up here was a fire from 2017. so, the washburn fire is not going to be able to spread north. if you want to see where it has been spreading, we can put the satellite-derived heat signature on here, and those brighter colors of yellow and orange show you the more recent pathway that the fire's going. but you can see down here all this granite. so the fire has nothing to burn here because that's all rock. so, anyway, the fire has slowed and hopefully that helps explain a little bit

the mariposa grove sits right there, like a donut hole that escaped the flames. and the mariposa grove has a decades-long history of forest thinning and prescribed burning, and that's why the fire basically avoided it like the plague. it went around it, and it avoided it like the plague in a good way. just to show you the benefits of actively managing the landscapes, by the way, why didn't that fire spread to the north? because that's where there's another burn scar from 2017. that whole area in orange is where we had the south fork fire in 2017. fire had nowhere to go in terms of moving in that direction. and if we just put up the satellite-derived heat signature on where the most recent heat from that flame is being detected, it's out there on the leading edge. so that fire is not out by any means. it's been much better behaved, and it's kind of running into some barriers. can't go north. can't go south because that's granite and it's not going back to the mariposa grove almost certainly because of a long history of boots on the ground, dedicated management to

grove, and the heart of the grove is up here, and down here, and yesterday the fire was moving into the grove, but overnight, it has turned east and working around the edge of the upper grove. this is -- it is a little too close to comfort to some of the most impressive parts of that grove, and it is still growing. by the way the community of the wawona including hotel of the 1880s is right there, and so a good sign for that community as the fire is progressing to the east there. and there is something to watch from home here from that fire in terms of the direct impact, and that could be some of the smoke. if this fire is still putting off as much smoke over the next 24 hour as it did over the previous 24shgs and it is producing a lot of smoke unfortunately, the general flow in the atmosphere is ogoing to want to take the smoke our way, so by tomorrow morning at this time, we may be seeing some to higher smoke in the sky. doubtful it would be a thick concentration at the lower elevations, but it is going to be certainly visible, and it might even reduce the air quality here at home
