the crew aboard a sausalito ship is back here in the bay area after removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of plastic waste from the ocean . ktvu is amanda quintana's in salta, lito to tell us what happens next to all that plastic waste. good morning, amanda. good morning that crew with ocean voyages institute they were out at sea for 45 days, but now they are back. they took that boat that you could see there behind me, and they were collecting plastic out in the ocean that has been polluting it now, but that was between california and hawaii in an area called the great pacific garbage patch on this recent trip. they collected £200,000 of plastic, adding up to £700,000 that they have removed from the ocean in the last four years. this includes items the smallest toothbrushes to his big as abandoned fishing nets that kill marine wildlife and needed a crane to remove them. it's a cleanup effort that has happened every year since 2009 all paid for by donations. the ocean voyages institute has been really leading the way using gps trackers to help remove plastics , and in 2020, they
