at 7:30 he'll swim from alcatraz island across san francisco bay, and he says today is a culmination of a journey that started 19 years ago. robert heitz was 22-year-old when he was on board a boat in 2003 in lake michigan. unfamiliar with the area, he dove head first into a sandbar and was rendered a quadriplegic. these are x-rays of his injuries. three years after his accident and a lot of physical therapy late, he was able to regain function of all four of his limbs. he was back at school studying biomedical engineering. he was driving and he was fully functional. fast forward to today, heitz takes on a new feat, in a couple of hours he'll swim from alcatraz island all across the san francisco bay. he says he's always been a strong swimmer and today he's claiming his place in the water where his injury happened. he's doing to to raise awareness for the paralysis recovery foundation, an organization he founded after his injury. heitz trained for this since january of last year. as you can imagine, today's journey is deeply personal. >> it's going to feel like the culmination and a

one man attempted to redo the 1962 prison break from alcatraz. some of the convicts were never found. this is a mystery warren wallace is trying to solve the founder of odyssey, open water swimming. it's a group that actually leads swims across the frigid, choppy waters of san francisco bay at night. well this summer, wallace attempted to swim the exact route. the escaped convicts are believed to have taken actually had to be pulled out of the water for a short time because of an oncoming oil tanker, but after an hour and a half at night, he touched land. the big feeling that i was getting the whole time. is this this kind of uncertainty like a lot of things when it really comes down to it, you can achieve a lot more than maybe you thought you could ahead of time. warren says. the cold waves and disorienting darkness all made the swim very challenging. but after doing it himself, he believes those convicts might have actually made it. the fbi officially closed the case in december of 79, although u s marshals service continues to investigate pare

now to what is arguably the most famous prison break in history, the 1960 to escape from alcatraz to this day. the fbi doesn't know for sure whether the three convicts involved made it off the infamous island dead or alive. it's a mystery warren wallace is trying to solve. he's the founder of odyssey open water swimming, a group that leads swims across san francisco bay. this summer, wallace set out to swim what was believed to be the convict escape route. he had to take a pause after an oil tanker came into his path. but after an hour and a half, he said he was able to make it to land. the big feeling that i was getting the whole time is this kind of uncertainty like a lot of things when it really comes down to it? you can achieve a lot more than maybe you thought you could ahead of time. warren says, the cold, the waves and disorienting darkness made the swim extremely challenging. but he says he thinks the three men could have made it. the fbi closed its case 17 years later by the u. s. marshal service continues to investigate. in the unlikely event. the trio is still alive. of co
