kaitlan collins is joining us right now. has the former president decided yet how he will respond to this move from the u.s. justice department? >> reporter: what we're told is that the former president and his legal team have not yet reached a decision on how to respond to this motion filed by the justice department to unseal this warrant. of course, the government notes in their notion that they favor unsealing it, absent the objection of the former president. so he does have until 3:00 p.m. tomorrow for the justice department to talk to his legal team and come to a conclusion on where they stand on this. so what the justice department did today with that statement, that brief statement from attorney general garland, is put the ball in trump's court. for him to make this decision whether or not they are going to unseal this warrant and let the public see what was included in it that led up to that unprecedented search on his residence on monday. or they could object to it, and try to fight it and lay out why they don't thi

cnn's kaitlan collins starts us off. kaitlan, what are you learning about this fbi operation? >> reporter: john, it's a remarkable development with the former president himself confirming that the fbi has executed a search warrant on his home in palm beach, florida, today. he said in a statement that his beautiful home, mar-a-lago in palm beach, of course, which became his primary residence after he left the white house, is, quote, currently under siege, raided and occupied by a large number of fbi agents. he says after working and cooperating with the relevant government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate. john, he adds, quote, they even broke into my safe, and he compared this to watergate, reverse watergate, and maintains it's an effort to stop him from running for president in 2024. we should note we have now learned that this search warrant had to do with that investigation into how the former president handled potentially classified information, certainly sensitive information when he left the white house. that is something we kne

kaitlan collins, these remarks, who do they satisfy? i understand that there are likely several audiences here, but who is appeased by what we're expecting to hear from the ag? >> reporter: i think a lot of that depends on what attorney general garland comes out and says. do i think he's going to speak for a few minutes and that's going to satisfy the trump allies who have been saying that the doj needs to come out and explain why this search warrant was granted for the former president a's residence, probab not. they are working to amplify what the former president has been pushed which is that the senate is a political -- politically motivated attack on him. that is ever since he was the one who confirmed this. i will note that the reporting takes time, and we have been reporting this out of how exactly this happened, what were the interactions that trump's attorneys had with doj officials and investigators before this search warrant was executed. but from monday night when we first learned about this, a lot of this was coming, this i

cnn's katelyn polantz and kaitlan collins are tracking the legal development. the first that the former president has made since his private residence was searched. katelyn polantz, let me start with you. what is trump's legal team asking for? >> essentially, donald trump and his legal team want to pump the brakes on anything that the justice department collected and would be going through now in this ongoing criminal investigation. so to do that, they're asking if four things. they're asking for a special master, so a third party that would be appointed by the court to make sure what is collected in the evidence is the sort of thing investigators can use as they continue investigating. he also wants to pause the justice department from reviewing that information, that's number two. number three, he wants a more detailed receipt of the property that was provided to him. we do know that the justice department, the fbi provided two receipts to him, that his lawyer signed at the end of that search when they removed 33 items. he wants more detail about that. and fo

kaitlan collins joins us now. the challenge now it would seem for the biden administration is getting voters to feel the effects of this bill or at least believe that it's going to be helping them. >> reporter: yeah. initially the challenge was getting this bill passed and now the white house is going to turn to focus their efforts on making sure voters know what exactly they passed and how it benefits them. this bill passed the house on friday, of course, that was after the senate had passed it following that surprise announcement from senator manchin and schumer and this is a bill that's called the inflation reduction act but really it addresses some of the core priorities that democrats had in a time when they didn't think, alex, they were going to get anything passed for eight months. it seemed like this had reached a dead end and now they have passed this bill that is going to extend those subsidies from the affordable care act. it's going to let medicare for the first time negotiate prescription drug prices.

let's bring in our chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. kaitlan, the president was certainly upbeat earlier today, but prices are still sky-high, and americans are still feeling the pain. >> they are, wolf. and you did see the president upbeat earlier, talking about these latest numbers that have come out when it comes to inflation of americans feeling some relief at the gas pump. but of course they still have a long way to go when it comes to inflation and a look at food prices alone, they are still incredibly high. so that is something the white house is obviously keeping in the back of their mind. but for an administration that has been on defense when it comes to inflation for the last several months, really any step in the right direction is a welcome step for them, and it certainly was for president biden earlier as he was talking this next positive indicator, but not quite ready, wolf, to declare victory. >> today we received news that our economy had zero percent inflation in the month of july. zero percent. we're seeing some signs

kaitlan collins reports from the white house. >> reporter: for a white house that has been on defense for months over inflation, it was welcome news at the white house when they got the july numbers showing that inflation had not really budged there. of course prices are still in-credit bring high as they skyrocketed over the last year, but the white house took it as a good sign that it was moving in the right direction, not time yet to declare a victory lap though, president biden did go out of his way to say that he did believe that it was a positive indication of where inflation is headed. >> it underscores the kind of economy we've been building. we're seeing a stronger labor market where jobs are booming and americans are working and we're seeing some signs that inflation may be beginning to moderate. that is what happens when you build an economy from the bottom up and middle out. >> reporter: president biden also taking that moment to urge congress to pass the inflation reduction act, of course that was once known as the "build back better" bill. it looks a lot different a year

the latest now from kaitlan collins in washington. >> reporter: good morning, christine. we are now learning that former president trump and his legal team are considering releasing the surveillance footage from those several hours when fbi agents were at mar-a-lago conducting that search of course of his property looking for classified information that they believe he took with him from his time in the white house to when he went to mar-a-lago as he left the day he was inaugurated. there were major questions of course this entire justice department investigation over how this information was handled and what exactly was taken down there and we're now told that despite that day when fbi agents showed up and they asked the trump team on the ground to turn off the surveillance cameras, they did not do so and they are now in control of several hours of footage of them actually being there conducting this search. and we're told that they are now considering releasing it, though there are some inside the former president's orbit weighing whether or not it would be a pro or con

let's go to our reporter, cnn's pamela brown and kaitlan collins. kaitlan, what more are you learning about the type of documents that were recovered in the search and what they may have related to? sorry, couldn't get kaitlan yet. pamela, you've been reporting on what triggered this search, namely concerns about what the former president and had not already turned over to the federal government, the questions about the truthfulness of his representatives. what else do you know? >> reporter: remember, this investigation had been going on for more than a year, and in june the fbi met with some of donald trump's representatives at mar-a-lago, saw the room where some of these additional documents were being held, sent a letter after saying it should be padlocked. the bottom line is i'm told through a source familiar is that the fbi believed that donald trump and his representatives hadn't turned over everything that it should have or it was required to that belonged to the government. we know previously the national archives had taken 15 boxes from mar

let's go to our chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. kaitlan, how significant is this bill for the biden agenda? >> it's very significant, wolf. it looks better than the build back better proposal democrats were talking about a year ago. it's still a substantial piece of legislation that has big investments in fighting climate change and reducing health care costs, also establishing that corporate minimum tax to pay for it all. you saw president biden touting this as he signed this bill into law at the white house, something that just a few months ago people here even in the administration weren't quite sure was going to happen, wolf. one thing that's also changed from what democrats were talking about last year is the name of this. it is now called the inflation reduction act after once being referred to as build back better. there have been some questions about just how much inflation it's going to reduce after the non-partisan congressional budget office said it wasn't really going to have a big affect on inflation. i asked senator m

back with me now, kaitlan collins, paul callan and cnn's dana bash. specifically on the conversations around the 25th amendment, what does that tell you about where the committee is -- what path the committee is headed down now as it's now kind of entering this next chapter. >> so much of what we've seen is about connecting the dots and giving new information and testimony about what actually happened in the past on january 6th and what it means for donald trump as -- as a president. looking at the 25th amendment and the notion that some of his cabinet members were effectively thinking about or talking about the idea that he was so dangerous that they should invoke something that has not been and get rid of him right then and there is a question of looking ahead. >> it's a question of looking ahead to whether or not he should be president again. it's also for history sake, but it's because they understand that this isn't just history, this is about the future. >> yeah, and kaitlyn also being brought before the committee is the current republican nomin

kaitlan collins has the latest on what the former president's team is hoping for. >> reporter: former president trump's attorneys are saying that they still would like a third party person assigned to the case of the materials taken from the former president's home, the materials seized in the search of his home, despite the justice department saying on 34 monday saying that they have already reviewed the materials and they have set aside a limited amount of what they say could be covered by attorney/client privilege and they are already going through the proper procedures of how to handle material like that in a situation seized. and they say they believe what is known as a special master assigned to the case to handle this, basically to have an outside party, a third party attorney help them work through the materials and make a judgment call based on what the justice department has been looking at, what they say could potentially be covered by attorney/client privilege or by executive privilege. that remains to be seen how exactly the justice department will argue against that, the

kaitlan collins is still with us. i want to turn, kaitlan, to your reporting. what can you tell us about how former president trump may actually wind up using the mar-a-lago surveillance footage of the fbi search as possible leverage? >> he's already using it, certainly to his gain when it comes to fundraising, wolf. because ever since that search happened on that monday and the days following, if you're signed up to get the former president's fundraising text messages or emails, you certainly saw a flood of them. almost every single one was centered on the search of mar-a-lago, which of course he framed in his political action committee framed as a raid of his residence by democrats. of course, those are accusations they basically used to translate instead of saying it was a lawfully conducted search warrant at his residence by the fbi, they've been using it to fund raise, wolf, and it is working. we've been told by "the washington post" reporting that in some days following the raid contributions to trump's political action committee topped a million. you've

joining us chief cnn correspondent kaitlan collins. and preet farrar. we talked about technical levels that must have been met for the search warrant to be executed. i guess i want to ask you, what must merrick garland and christopher ray have seen, why do you think they deemed it was worth it if they approved this for such an operation to take place? >> you're absolutely right there's a technical level of proof required for a standard of probable cause. i think he had just barely probable cross that a crime had been caused. such as removal of presidential records or removal of classified documents. given the stakes here, given the sensitivity, the nature of the property whose it is, the president of the united states. i think they wanted the threshold to be much, much higher. i think it signals they had significant concerns they didn't get all the documents back in january when they took 15 boxes but they must have close in time with the who can show the judge in affidavit that documents are still there, there's evidence of misconduct up to and includi

kaitlan collins has been all over this. they are the two most senior former trump officials we know of who have been interviewed by the fbi. >> that's right, alex. cnn has confirmed the fbi spoke to both pat cipollone and patrick philbin earlier this year. cipollone and philbin were top lawyers in the white house but when the administration ended they became among the central people appointed to handle trump's interactions with the national archives and the work of his administration when they needed to turn over federal records that were no longer his since he became a private citizen. in the spring, the criminal investigation became very active leading to fbi interviews just like these ones of cipollone and philbin and others and investigators were subpoenaing to get back the presidential records and we now know that they were subpoenaing surveillance videos of mar-a-lago, too. the "new york times" reported that something on the surveillance footage around a storage room at mar-a-lago caught investigators' attention, even

collins joins us with that. what is the reaction from trump's legal team? >> his orbit was caught guard -- it was remarkable in and of itself, as evan leitao. they were a bit caught off guard, so navigating in the hours after attorney general garland came out on how to proceed and what they will do. that involved them contacting outside attorneys. of course, the former president has been represented by a slew of attorneys, lately. he has been focused on one who was present when the search happened on monday. -- defending the president and consulting with him on how to proceed going forth here. what i am told is that they have not made a decision on how to proceed. of course, they had the deadline by 3 pm tomorrow. it does appear that they are leaning towards the idea of challenging this, of objecting to the idea of unsealing the search warrant, as the justice department laid out today, though to be clear they, have not made a decision it. that remains to be seen, where they will go from here. certainly, this is

i'm john berman, brianna is off, cnn chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins here on this busy friday. >> we've got a lot going -- a lot of deadlines on friday, not our kind of deadlines, deadlines for the justice department, for trump's legal team, a lot going on. >> the deadline is noon, but it could happen before then. the justice department has been ordered by a federal judge to release a redacted version of the affidavit used to justify the fbi's search of mar-a-lago, again, by noon today. it could come out earlier. the affidavit lays out why investigators believe there was probable cause that crimes had been committed. >> and in his order that came out yesterday very quickly judge bruce reinhart said the justice department had made a good argument for why portions of this document that are behind the mar-a-lago search should remain shielded, saying, quote, disclosure would reveal the identities of witnesses, law enforcement agents, uncharged parties, maybe the investigation's strategy, direction, scope. sources, methods and grand jury information. the judge agreeing with

let's speak with kaitlan collins following all the latest. you're in new york, usually you're at the white house. >> good to be inside. >> this is the first official legal response from trump's team. took two weeks to file. what do you think it means going forward? >> it did take two weeks, which is significant in and of itself because the point of having this person, which is actually not that unusual for them to make this request and for what is known as a special master, really a third party, outside attorney, and in cases before it has been a retired judge, for example. they would come in and be able to help separate the documents of what the fbi took during that nine-hour long search and go through what they believe is considered executive privilege or privileged material, attorney/client privilege. that's what they're looking at. the fact they waited two weeks, we heard from people, this is a point of disagreement inside trump's legal team, maybe it is too late, because the fbi likely has already gone through this material and so they d

. >> kaitlan collins begins our coverage tonight at the white house. and i mentioned the news you broke at the top of the show. you've been working on this, and you found out there are deep concerns at the biden white house about the documents found at mar-a-lago. what more are your sources telling you? >> reporter: the white house is not saying basically anything about this investigation, certainly not publicly, erin, but we are told that internally there is a pretty high level of concern about what exactly documents were taken to mar-a-lago, and potentially what could be at risk by the fact that they were taken there, not in a secured facility as the way that the federal government defines that and certainly not the way the intelligence community defines that as, and so as more information has emerged as we have now seen what exactly was taken from mar-a-lago, we don't know specifically what the documents were. you saw that inventory list that came out last week after the judge unsealed it, that did list what they took, including some information tha

kaitlan collins, thank you very much. joining us now, the senior adviser to the president, the white house infrastructure coordinator, mitch landrieu. thank you for joining us. this is a significant piece of legislation, but it will take years for some of these provisions to take effect. what can you point to in this bill that will help americans who are hurting now? >> well, first of all, we have already started. this will be the third major piece of legislation the president has passed, actually the fifth when you take the american rescue plan, the bipartisan infrastructure bill, which is in operation now and drivering things right now, and then of course if this bill should pass the house, this bill has tax credits in it and subsidies that are going to start right away. incredibly what this bill is going to do something presidents have been trying to do for a long time, is to give medicare the ability to negotiate to give folks prescription drug prices lower. it's also going to reduce health care subsidies, reduce the

so for that let's go to our chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. what more are you hearing about that inner circle around trump that seems to be increasingly concerned? >> two things, one, what this new reporting from our colleagues shows is maybe an explanation potentially and partially for what was happening in that period of when trump returned. some of the boxes to the national archives, but then didn't return others. it is what led to that fbi search of mar-a-lago that happened in recent weeks. and tom fitton is the head of this legal activist group known as judicial watch. he's often on television, often in the format that people use to appeal to trump and to make arguments and his argument and his view is trump should have never turned over any of the documents, any of the materials in the first place and basically they were letting the national archives strong arm him into returning them. that's an argument that our colleagues are told was appealing to trump, one that he was listening to that was brought into his inner circle and may have p

kaitlan collins, appreciate it. stay with us. i want to bring in law enforcement analyst andrew mccabe. also cnn contributor john dean, who has some experience with tapes. andrew, what do you think the reaction within the fbi would be to the release of these surveillance images? >> deep concern. deep concern for a number of reasons. first and foremost, when you're executing a search warrant for the purpose of recovering potentially highly classified material, the last thing you want to have is a video of that material released to the public. that's the entire purpose of the warrant to recover material, get it back into a place that's -- >> so the fbi would actually be concerned about what the camera might pick up? >> exactly, exactly. then, of course, second, and a very close second, i might add, is the increased risk that it will pose to these agents. we already know that the trump camp in mar-a-lago released the documents last week that contain the identities of two agents that were on the scene. i'm sure there were many more t

right now i want whatever chief white house correspondent kaitlan collins. she's getting new information on the search at mar-a-lago. caitlin, what are you hearing? >> we are learning more about would have been in the league of -- executed at the former president primary residence in florida. it was a meeting that happened in early june, when a handful of investigators went to palm beach florida. they met with several of the attorneys while they're. we are told that during this meeting that the former president stopped by and greeted these investigators who are meeting with 2 of his attorneys at mar-a-lago. we are told he did not stay or answer questions according to sources telling me that and my colleague, but then after he left, the 2 attorneys that were meeting with these investigators at mar-a-lago, they took him to the basement room at mar-a-lago, the property, there and show them where the boxes of documents that were taken from trump's -- were being stored. we are told it is investigators looked around the room and they left. i'm told by a person who
